HOUSTON (AP) – Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport has become a central symbol of the chaos caused by the ongoing TSA crisis, directly linked to the current government shutdown. While travelers across the United States are enduring long security lines, Houston’s largest airport has faced some of the worst delays. Passengers are often waiting up to four hours to get through TSA security, and many of these disruptions are due to the lack of TSA workers, who have stopped showing up for work because they aren’t being paid during the shutdown.

While the partial government shutdown has impacted airports nationwide, Bush Intercontinental stands out due to a combination of high passenger traffic, a high callout rate among TSA workers, and the financial strain felt by many security employees. Despite efforts by airport officials and TSA unions to explain the reasons behind the delays, frustration is mounting as travelers face slow-moving lines and growing uncertainty about the situation.

TSA Crisis: Major Staffing Shortages at Houston’s Airports

The callout rate for TSA workers in Houston has been particularly high compared to other major airports. While about 11% of TSA workers across the country have not shown up for their shifts, nearly 40% of TSA staff at Bush Intercontinental have been absent. At Hobby Airport, the rate is even higher, at 43%.

The lack of staff has led to a significant reduction in the number of TSA checkpoint lanes operational. Normally, Bush Intercontinental operates 37 lanes, but with so many workers absent, only a third to half of those lanes are functioning. This has created a serious backlog, forcing travelers to endure long delays as they try to make their flights.

Jim Szczesniak, director of aviation for the Houston Airport System, expressed concern that the situation at Bush Intercontinental is likely to worsen unless Congress intervenes. “We worry conditions will only get worse at airports across the U.S. until Congress ends this shutdown,” he said in a video posted to social media.

Why Is Bush Intercontinental Affected More Than Other Airports?

Several factors are contributing to the difficulties at Bush Intercontinental. As one of the busiest airports in the nation, it serves as a major hub for United Airlines, with 34.8 million passengers flying with United in 2024 alone. This high volume of passengers has placed even more pressure on the TSA workforce, which has already been stretched thin due to the ongoing shutdown. Additionally, the hiring freeze for TSA agents means that no new workers have been brought in for nearly a year, exacerbating the shortage.

Johnny Jones, the secretary and treasurer for the American Federation of Government Employees, which represents TSA workers nationwide, explained that the high callout rate was due to the financial struggles faced by TSA workers. He noted that workers had already been dealing with financial difficulties from the previous year’s shutdown, and with rising costs for groceries and gas, many employees were simply exhausted. He added that if all employees were being paid, there would be no lines.

Houston’s Busy Month: Spring Break and Major Events

The timing of the shutdown is especially problematic for Houston, as the city has been experiencing an influx of travelers due to several major events. March is a particularly busy month, with visitors flocking to the city for the World Baseball Classic, the CERAWeek energy conference, and the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, which drew millions of people. Despite the chaos at the airport, Houston’s hotel industry has reported record-breaking bookings, making it the best month for hotel reservations in the city’s history.

Mayor John Whitmire acknowledged the frustration caused by the delays but emphasized that tourism in Houston remained strong. He stated in a statement that while the delays were frustrating for travelers, they did not seem to be affecting tourism.

Temporary Improvement in Wait Times

By Wednesday, some improvements were seen at Bush Intercontinental, with wait times at TSA checkpoints dropping to under two hours. Passengers expressed appreciation for the TSA staff working during the crisis. “Everyone’s trying their best. And thanks to all the TSA members who are here,” said Raj Chauhan, a passenger traveling to Miami.

However, many travelers are still anxious about what the future holds if the shutdown continues. With the summer travel season approaching, and high volumes of passengers expected, there are concerns that these delays could become a permanent part of the airport experience unless the situation is resolved soon.

Looking Forward: What Needs to Be Done

As the government shutdown persists, there’s growing pressure from passengers, airport staff, and industry leaders for Congress to address the TSA staffing shortages. Without a resolution, airports like Bush Intercontinental are likely to continue facing significant delays, further testing the patience of travelers.

The TSA crisis at Bush Intercontinental has become a microcosm of the larger issues facing U.S. airports due to the shutdown. While the situation has temporarily improved, the ongoing uncertainty about the future of TSA staffing and air travel remains a major concern for both passengers and airport officials.

As the nation waits for the shutdown to end, travelers are advised to allow extra time at airports and to stay updated on their flight schedules. With spring break and the summer travel season just around the corner, finding a resolution to this crisis is critical to ensuring smooth airport operations nationwide.
