Hotel and Restaurant Association (Western India) – HRAWI partners with AIC-BARC to implement advanced sustainable waste management technologies across member hotels and resorts.
The Hotel and Restaurant Association (Western India) – HRAWI has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Atal Incubation Centre – Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (AIC-BARC) to bring sustainable solid waste management technologies to its member hotels and resorts. This initiative aligns with the Government of India’s ‘Swachh Bharat Mission’ and aims to significantly reduce the environmental impact of waste generated by the hospitality sector.
Through this partnership, HRAWI will facilitate the adoption of advanced waste management solutions developed by BARC, including Nisargruna, Shesha, and Solid Waste Composting technologies. These innovations are designed to transform waste into useful byproducts such as biogas and organic manure, supporting a circular economy model that minimizes material usage and promotes resource efficiency.
The collaboration also enables HRAWI members to work with licensed agencies for the installation, commissioning, and maintenance of these technologies. AIC-BARC, which is supported by the Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) and NITI Aayog, will act as a knowledge partner, providing technical consultations throughout the implementation process.
The technologies developed by BARC address the unique needs of the hospitality industry, where wet waste generation varies across establishments. By leveraging these solutions, hotels and restaurants can manage waste more effectively while contributing to environmental conservation.
HRAWI has long been a champion of sustainability within the hospitality industry. The association regularly organizes seminars and training programs to educate its members on adopting eco-friendly practices. Its initiatives are also aligned with Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment), a global movement led by India to promote sustainable living and combat climate change.

This partnership with AIC-BARC marks another milestone in HRAWI’s efforts to drive green practices in the industry. By integrating innovative waste management technologies, the association aims to set a benchmark for sustainability in the hospitality sector.
With this initiative, HRAWI continues to lead the way in combining environmental responsibility with business excellence, furthering India’s vision for a cleaner and greener future.
“HRAWI is a strong advocate for sustainable and eco-friendly practices in the hospitality sector. This partnership with AIC-BARC marks a significant step in promoting routine adoption of advanced waste management technologies. Additionally, the collaboration will support entrepreneurs, startups and self-help groups by sharing best practices and promoting innovation. The collaboration underscores our commitment to driving growth responsibly, contributing to India’s long-term sustainability goals while enhancing operational efficiency,” says Ms Trupti Pawar, Secretary General, HRAWI.
“These technologies aim to minimize waste generation and reduce the volume sent to landfills by enabling waste processing at the source. This not only benefits the environment but also offers cost savings for hospitality businesses. The initiative reflects a commitment to circularity in waste recycling, helping establishments integrate sustainability into their operations,” says Mr Pradeep Shetty, Spokesperson, HRAWI.
“As India’s tourism sector undergoes unprecedented growth, sustainability must remain a priority. By embracing circular economy principles and environmentally responsible practices, we can align with the country’s vision of welcoming 100 million tourists by 2047 and achieving a USD 3 trillion hospitality economy,” concludes Mr Shetty.
