Thailand tourism is losing momentum in PATA’s early 2026 figures, while Vietnam and South Korea record strong growth. For travellers comparing Asian holidays, that split raises a practical question about value. However, fewer visitors do not automatically mean cheaper rooms, and rising arrivals do not prove that holidays cost more. Released on 22 October, PATA’s Annual Tourism Monitor highlights an uneven recovery across its reporting destinations. Alongside newer government statistics, the findings put total holiday costs, convenient access and the quality of experiences under scrutiny. The opportunity lies in comparing complete journeys rather than choosing destinations by their popularity alone.

Thailand tourism faces a value test beyond visitor numbers

PATA reported 15.9 million international arrivals for Thailand during its available early-2026 reporting periods, down 4.9% year on year. Vietnam recorded 12.3 million, up 14.9%, while South Korea reached 10.7 million, up 21.4%. These are partial-year figures, not totals through October. Pacific Asia Travel Association

The findings do not demonstrate that visitors have switched from Thailand to either competitor. They also provide no comparable holiday-price basket, making any claim of a new cheapest destination premature.

Thailand’s response centres on experiences

Thailand’s policy response extends beyond attracting larger crowds. In its 21 October announcement, the Tourism Authority of Thailand outlined its 2027 Value over Volume direction, emphasising wellness, repeat visitors, emerging destinations and year-round experiences.

The programme includes partnerships with booking platforms and airlines. Singapore promotions running from October 2026 to January 2027 cover wellness, active experiences, family travel and selected airfares. TAT Newsroom

These initiatives should be assessed through their actual inclusions and conditions. A package offering useful transfers or activities may suit one traveller better than a lower room-only rate.

Vietnam grows, but popularity is not a price guarantee

Vietnam’s newer figures reinforce its growth story. According to the Vietnam Government News report citing the National Statistics Office, the country welcomed approximately 17.7 million international visitors between January and September 2026, up 14.5%.

Authorities attributed the performance to several factors, including favourable visa policies, promotion, varied tourism products and competitive travel costs. The country had achieved nearly 71% of its published target of 25 million international visitors for 2026. en.baochinhphu.vn

That national assessment does not establish that every Vietnamese itinerary offers better value than Thailand. Travellers still need comparable quotations for their departure airport, dates and preferred accommodation.

South Korea adds a spending dimension

South Korea’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism reported 17.11 million inbound visitors through September 2026, up 21.5% year on year. Tourism-sector card spending by international visitors reached KRW15.845 trillion, an increase of 46.8%.

The spending measure is not total tourism revenue. Nor does its growth, by itself, establish that prices increased: visitor numbers, purchasing behaviour and payment choices must also be considered. mcst.go.kr

For holidaymakers, the useful comparison remains the complete experience purchased within a fixed budget. National spending totals cannot replace a personal itinerary calculation.

Compare the journey, not the advertised room

A credible holiday value comparison needs consistent assumptions. Compare the same departure point, travel dates, number of nights and accommodation standard across all three destinations.

Include:

  • Return flights, baggage and seat charges.
  • Accommodation, taxes and breakfast.
  • Airport transfers and intercity transport.
  • Meals, attractions and essential entry costs.
  • Cancellation terms and insurance.

Also compare usable holiday time. An itinerary requiring additional connections or lengthy transfers should be judged alongside its price, particularly for a short break.

Access matters as much as the headline fare

Thailand is also adding direct access. TAT confirmed that Virgin Atlantic’s seasonal London Heathrow–Phuket service began arriving on 19 October 2026, operating three times weekly during the 2026–2027 UK winter season. TAT Newsroom

The development gives relevant travellers another itinerary to compare; it does not establish lower fares. Airports, airlines and tour operators must convert connectivity into convenient, clearly priced journeys.

For hotels and local businesses, the commercial opportunity is similarly practical: explain what guests receive and make regional experiences straightforward to book.

What the figures cannot tell businesses

The cited releases do not provide comparable employment, foreign-investment or tourism-profit figures for all three countries. Arrival growth should therefore not be presented as proof of stronger wages, better margins or wider community benefits.

PATA’s published direction emphasises diversified source markets, longer stays and travel beyond major gateways. Those priorities provide a framework for future assessment, rather than evidence that every destination has already achieved them. www.pata.org

Traveller FAQs

Does Thailand’s decline mean holidays are cheaper?
No. The arrival figures do not measure comparable accommodation or airfare changes. Check complete quotations.

Can Vietnam or South Korea be called better value?
Not from visitor growth alone. Compare equivalent itineraries and the experiences included.

What should travellers check before paying?
Confirm passport-specific entry requirements, arrival formalities, baggage allowances, transfer arrangements and cancellation conditions through official authorities and suppliers.

The booking decision

Thailand’s slower arrivals and the stronger performance of Vietnam and South Korea create a useful moment to reassess holiday value. They do not establish a regional price winner. Travellers should compare complete costs, usable holiday time and booking conditions before paying. Tourism businesses face a related challenge: explain clearly what visitors receive, rather than relying on destination popularity. Official strategies increasingly emphasise spending, experiences and access, but their success requires evidence beyond arrival totals. For the next trip, the strongest choice is the itinerary that fits the traveller’s budget and priorities, supported by transparent prices and current entry information.
