India’s aviation sector has experienced significant growth in the first half of FY26, with air passenger traffic reaching two hundred two million. This surge is driven by strong demand in both domestic and international travel, as the sector continues to recover and expand. Factors such as increasing middle-class mobility, expanded airline networks, and favorable demographic trends are propelling this upward trajectory, ensuring a positive outlook for the remainder of the fiscal year. The growing demand for air travel, especially during peak seasons, highlights the resilience and potential of India’s aviation market.

India’s aviation sector has seen notable growth in air passenger traffic, with overall traffic rising by 2.6 percent year-on-year to reach 202 million passengers in the first half of FY26, up from 197 million in the same period the previous year, according to a new report.

Domestic air traffic in India grew by a modest 1.6 percent, while international traffic saw a stronger increase of 6.9 percent. These figures reflect the continued recovery and expansion of the aviation industry as the country’s air transport market continues to rebound.

Looking ahead, the total number of air passengers in India is projected to hit 430 million by the end of FY26, though this estimate has been revised down from the previous forecast of 445 million. Despite the revision, the outlook for the aviation sector remains positive, driven by robust demand for air travel and significant capacity expansions at both airports and airlines.

The report, published by CareEdge Ratings, highlighted that the growth in air traffic is supported by several factors, including an increase in the middle-class population, favorable demographic trends, and heightened demand for travel, particularly in the international segment. Domestic air traffic is expected to grow by 3.5 percent for the entire fiscal year, while international traffic is anticipated to see a stronger rise of around 8 percent. The second half of FY26 is expected to benefit from the festive season, which typically drives higher travel volumes, and from the opening of two new greenfield airports that will help ease supply constraints and boost traffic growth.

One of the key drivers of the optimistic forecast is the healthy operating income expected for the aviation sector, which should lead to a significant increase in profit before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (PBILDT). The report projects a year-on-year growth of over 40 percent in PBILDT for 11 of India’s major airports. This indicates that the financial health of the country’s airport operators is expected to remain strong, even as they face increasing competition and rising operational costs.

Additionally, the report pointed out that airport players’ financial risk profiles are expected to remain solid, with aggregate aero revenue for the 11 airports assessed likely to grow by 50 percent year-on-year. This suggests that despite the challenges posed by fluctuating fuel prices and global economic conditions, the outlook for India’s aviation sector remains positive.

The overall growth of India’s aviation industry is also fueled by continued expansions in both airport infrastructure and airline fleets, which are expected to meet the increasing demand for air travel. These expansions are particularly critical in accommodating the rise in international travel, as more Indians travel abroad for business, leisure, and family visits. The growth in international traffic, particularly to destinations in the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Europe, has played a key role in the overall increase in air traffic.

India’s aviation sector has benefited from improvements in airport capacity and efficiency, as well as an increase in the number of budget carriers offering affordable travel options for both domestic and international flights. The opening of new airports and the upgrade of existing ones have helped meet the growing demand, with several major cities in India seeing increased connectivity both within the country and globally.

India’s air passenger traffic growth for the first half of FY26 has set a solid foundation for the rest of the fiscal year, with both domestic and international segments expected to see continued growth. The forecast for increased passenger numbers, coupled with infrastructure developments and the positive outlook for airport and airline revenues, signals a strong recovery and a bright future for India’s aviation industry. The sector’s continued expansion is expected to be a key driver of economic growth, contributing to job creation, tourism, and overall business activity across the country.
