The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has unveiled its latest “Value of Air Transport” report for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, offering a compelling snapshot of how the aviation sector has become a key engine driving the nation’s economic ambitions. Released at IATA Aviation Day MENA, the report draws attention to the deep-rooted impact of aviation, not just as a mode of transport, but as a foundational pillar of Saudi Arabia’s evolving economic landscape.

According to IATA’s 2023 data, aviation—including its wide-reaching tourism ecosystem—generated USD 90.6 billion in total economic value for the Kingdom. This accounts for 8.5% of Saudi Arabia’s GDP, reflecting the sector’s growing importance far beyond airport terminals and flight operations. The figure represents the full scope of aviation’s economic footprint, from core airline and airport activities to jobs in tourism, supply chains, and employee spending.

Employment figures further emphasize aviation’s transformative effect. The sector supports an estimated 4 million jobs across the Kingdom, including roles in airline operations, logistics, airport services, and travel-related industries. Of these, 62,000 jobs are held directly within airlines—a testament to the industry’s role in building a skilled and sustainable workforce. This labor force represents a cross-section of economic activity, connecting domestic capacity building with international expertise.

Saudi Arabia’s position in global air cargo is also gaining prominence. With over 713,600 tonnes of cargo moved by air in 2023, the Kingdom continues to develop as a strategic logistics and freight hub for the wider Middle East. From high-value industrial goods to pharmaceuticals and perishables, air cargo is enabling faster trade and strengthening the country’s role in global supply chains.

The timing of the report aligns with Saudi Arabia’s ambitious Vision 2030 blueprint—a nationwide initiative to diversify the economy and reduce its dependency on oil. Central to this strategy is the development of world-class aviation infrastructure and tourism offerings that place the Kingdom at the heart of global travel and commerce. Projects such as the creation of the new national airline Riyadh Air, and the expansion of airports in cities like Jeddah, Riyadh, and Dammam, are reshaping the national aviation landscape.

The tourism sector, strongly tied to aviation, is also being reimagined with developments like NEOM, the Red Sea Project, and cultural destinations in AlUla. These initiatives are designed to attract millions of international visitors annually, with aviation serving as the primary gateway to these new experiences.

At IATA Aviation Day MENA, industry leaders emphasized that aviation is no longer simply a service sector in Saudi Arabia—it is a strategic enabler of economic resilience, diversification, and international integration. As the country looks to the future, the aviation industry is poised to soar even higher, opening doors to investment, innovation, and global influence.

With clear vision, robust infrastructure development, and increasing connectivity, aviation will remain a critical driver of Saudi Arabia’s transformation for decades to come.

“Aviation is a catalyst for economic and social development. Saudi Arabia has understood this and is using connectivity as a key element of its national economic strategy under Vision 2030. Already, aviation supports 1.4 million jobs and 8.5% of the Kingdom’s GDP. This contributes substantially to the Kingdom’s prosperity today, and that will grow with investments, including those for infrastructure and talent development.  Continued prioritization of aviation as a strategic sector supported by global standards, competitive costs and smart regulation will enhance Saudi Arabia’s global competitiveness, economic performance, and social development,” said Kamil Alawadhi, IATA’s Regional Vice President for Africa and Middle East.

Saudi Arabia’s Key Priorities for Advancing Aviation

To maximize the benefits of its aviation sector, IATA has identified three critical priorities for Saudi Arabia’s continued growth and development:

1. Collaboration and Global Standards: As a major player in regional aviation, Saudi Arabia must maintain close collaboration with stakeholders and users, aligning its practices with global standards and industry best practices. This will ensure that the Kingdom remains at the forefront of aviation policy and operations.
2. Infrastructure Development: With substantial investments in airport infrastructure and digital advancements, Saudi Arabia is positioning itself as a leading aviation hub. It is crucial to maintain industry partnerships to ensure these developments are cost-effective and enhance competitiveness on a global scale.
3. Capacity Building: The Kingdom’s ability to become a global aviation leader depends on cultivating a highly skilled workforce. To this end, IATA has partnered with Saudi organizations to provide training opportunities for over 1,000 aviation graduates and employees, ensuring the sector’s long-term sustainability and growth.
