Norway Shares the Spotlight With Sweden, Finland and Switzerland as Five Ice Hotels Offer Arctic Nights and Alpine Escapes for Winter 2026/27

Operators of five ice and snow hotels across Norway, Sweden, Finland and Switzerland are preparing winter 2026/27 stays, combining December openings and year-round accommodation with ice art, regional dining and outdoor activities. Their published programmes give tour operators dates and package details for holidays built around Arctic landscapes and Alpine mountains.
The experience extends beyond sleeping below freezing. Guests can dine on dishes presented on ice plates, visit sculpted chapels, join husky excursions or spend an evening above Zermatt with views of the Matterhorn. Several properties pair a cold night with heated accommodation, creating options for longer stays.

Winter 2026/27: The Dates That Shape the Season
The four seasonal properties open within ten days of one another in December. Norway’s Snowhotel 365 remains available throughout the year, while Sweden’s ICEHOTEL combines its rebuilt winter hotel with a permanent ice accommodation wing.
| Hotel and destination | Published operating window | Main features |
|---|---|---|
| ICEHOTEL 37, Jukkasjärvi, Sweden | 11 December 2026–April 2027; exact final date not specified | Seasonal ice architecture, with year-round ICEHOTEL 365 alongside. |
| Arctic SnowHotel, Rovaniemi, Finland | 15 December 2026–31 March 2027 | Snow rooms, Ice Restaurant, Ice Chapel and separate heated glass igloos. |
| Iglu-Dorf Zermatt, Switzerland | 19 December 2026–4 April 2027 | Alpine igloos at 2,727 metres, fondue dining and wellness facilities. |
| Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel, Alta, Norway | 20 December 2026–31 March 2027 | Annually rebuilt themed rooms and the adjacent Arctic Wilderness Lodge. |
| Snowhotel 365, Bjørnevatn near Kirkenes, Norway | Year-round | Individually carved rooms maintained at minus 4°C and heated Gamme Cabins. |
ICEHOTEL’s current art-suite information confirms availability into April 2027, without establishing a precise mid-April closing date. The other seasonal windows above follow the operators’ published calendars.

Kirkenes Keeps Its Frozen Rooms Open Through Every Season
At Snow Resort Kirkenes in Bjørnevatn, Snowhotel 365 offers an ice hotel experience beyond the usual winter calendar. International sculptors carve each room individually. The interior stays at minus 4°C, while a nearby heated building provides the practical facilities needed for an overnight visit.
The operator describes using up to 30 tonnes of ice and freshly made snow to preserve and renew the structure. Its published description does not specify an annual renewal volume. The hotel therefore operates through continuing maintenance, rather than an annual cycle of complete construction and spring melting.

Overnight stays include thermal sleeping bags, breakfast and a three-course dinner. Guests also have access to a heated lounge, showers and sauna facilities. Small lockers hold valuables, while a separate luggage room accommodates larger bags.
The resort’s Arctic Highlights package illustrates how the experience fits into a short break. It combines one night in Snowhotel 365 with one night in a heated Gamme Cabin, alongside husky sledding and a king crab safari. That particular programme runs from December to March, while the snow hotel remains open outside those months.
Sweden Turns Torne River Ice Into a Changing Art Hotel
In Jukkasjärvi, Swedish Lapland, ICEHOTEL’s seasonal building begins with ice harvested from the Torne River. Artists transform it into rooms and installations each winter. The structure melts in spring, giving each edition a limited lifespan.
ICEHOTEL 37 opens on 11 December 2026. Cold bedrooms remain around minus 5°C, with mattresses, reindeer hides and sleeping bags forming part of the overnight arrangement. Heated facilities at Riverside provide toilets, showers, sauna access and secure luggage storage.
The permanent ICEHOTEL 365 broadens the operating model. It contains 18 art and deluxe suites, an ice bar and an experience room. Solar panels provide cooling energy during the May–July midnight-sun period, helping maintain the frozen interiors during summer. This supports year-round ice stays alongside the winter building’s seasonal operation.
Dining adds another reason to visit:

- ICEHOTEL Restaurant: Its four-course Ice Menu uses local ingredients, with selected dishes presented on plates made from Torne River ice. The restaurant itself is heated. The Ice Menu is not available at lunch.
- The Veranda: This separate tasting-menu experience reopens on 11 December 2026. Its advertised menu contains 12 dishes inspired by the eight Sámi seasons.
- Old Homestead: The published winter dining period runs from 11 December 2026 to 28 March 2027. That closing date should not be extended to The Veranda, whose current page does not confirm the same end date.
ICEHOTEL also publishes day admission of SEK 325 for adults, SEK 225 for students and seniors, and SEK 39 for children aged four to 12. Those rates are labelled for 13 April–December 2026, rather than the whole winter 2026/27 season. Children aged three and under enter free with a paying adult, and overnight guests receive complimentary admission.
Rovaniemi Combines Snow Suites With Northern Lights Alerts
Arctic SnowHotel in Rovaniemi opens on 15 December 2026, with its advertised winter season continuing until 31 March 2027. Rebuilt annually, it has approximately 20 rooms accommodating around 70 guests. Options include double accommodation and family rooms or suites for up to six people. Its Ice Restaurant, Ice Bar and Ice Chapel for ceremonies also form part of the attraction.
Snow-room temperatures remain between zero and minus 5°C. Electric lighting and charging sockets provide practical comforts inside the frozen setting. Overnight arrangements include a guided safety introduction, breakfast and a hot drink delivered during the morning wake-up call.
The property operates two distinct Northern Lights alert systems. In the snow hotel, a Northern Lights Watcher monitors the sky and staff personally wake guests when displays appear. In the separate glass igloos, guests can activate an electronic Aurora Alarm.
The 39 heated glass igloos, available from 1 September, extend the accommodation season into autumn. They have underfloor heating, private shower rooms and electrically defrosted roofs. Their guests receive admission to the snow hotel during its winter operating period, allowing a heated overnight stay to include the ice attraction.
Alta Rebuilds Its Igloo Hotel Around a New Winter Theme
Near Alta in northern Norway, Sorrisniva prepares its Igloo Hotel for 20 December 2026–31 March 2027. Visit Norway, using information supplied by Visit Alta, lists it as the world’s northernmost ice hotel. Each annual edition introduces a different artistic theme.

Construction requires 250 tonnes of ice and 7,000 cubic metres of snow. The materials come from two distinct sources: ice is harvested from Sierravann lake, while water from the Alta River supplies snow production. The finished building contains themed bedrooms, carved reliefs, ice furniture and a chapel.
Inside, temperatures range from minus 4°C to minus 7°C. Insulated mattresses and reindeer hides sit above the ice beds. Overnight provisions include sleeping equipment, breakfast, heated washrooms, luggage storage and morning sauna access.
The surrounding activity programme includes snowmobiling across the Finnmark plateau, husky sledding, snowshoeing and Northern Lights excursions. The adjacent Arctic Wilderness Lodge operates throughout the year, with 24 rooms and suites for up to 50 guests. Sorrisniva promotes combining lodge accommodation with an Igloo Hotel experience, providing a practical format for longer holidays and group stays.
Zermatt Takes the Igloo Experience Into the Swiss Alps
Iglu-Dorf Zermatt operates from 19 December 2026 to 4 April 2027, at 2,727 metres above sea level. Its position below Rotenboden station places the snow village within the mountain landscape overlooking the Matterhorn.
The complex contains ten overnight igloos accommodating up to 24 guests, within a village of more than 15 igloos. Snow corridors connect the structures, while sculpted interiors create spaces for sleeping, eating and relaxing. The village is rebuilt each winter and melts in spring. Temperatures inside remain around freezing point.
Swiss cheese fondue is central to the dining offer, including on the outdoor terrace. The advertised couples’ experience combines fondue, a guided snowshoe walk, sauna and whirlpool access, and breakfast at a mountain restaurant. Expedition sleeping bags, liners and thermal mats are included in the listed room equipment.

Facilities vary by category. The Panorama Suite has a private whirlpool and toilet, while other accommodation uses shared wellness facilities. These distinctions matter when comparing packages under the same Iglu-Dorf brand.
Iglu-Dorf’s Wider Alpine Calendar Covers Three Countries
Zermatt forms part of a network extending across Switzerland, Germany and Austria. The operator confirms the following additional winter 2026/27 dates:
| Iglu-Dorf location | Country | Opening date | Closing date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gstaad | Switzerland | 25 December 2026 | 4 April 2027. |
| Davos Klosters | Switzerland | 26 December 2026 | 4 April 2027. |
| Zugspitze | Germany | 26 December 2026 | 4 April 2027. |
| Innsbruck/Kühtai | Austria | 26 December 2026 | 29 March 2027. |
These calendars give travel companies additional bases for including an igloo night within an Alpine itinerary. Room categories, dining arrangements and wellness facilities remain specific to each location.
One Cold Night Can Anchor a Longer Winter Holiday
Published packages show how operators combine the unusual bedroom with more conventional accommodation. ICEHOTEL recommends one night in a cold room, with the remaining nights spent in heated rooms. Its standard opening package includes one night in each format, breakfast, sleeping equipment and an ice-sculpting class. Kirkenes offers a similar combination through its snow-hotel and Gamme Cabin programme.
The practical details differ across properties:
- Sleeping equipment: ICEHOTEL describes bags suitable for temperatures down to minus 25°C. Sorrisniva publishes a different specification, so one rating should not be applied to every hotel.
- Clothing: Dry thermal layers, socks and hats feature in official packing advice. Zermatt specifically recommends merino base layers in its checklist.
- Heated facilities: ICEHOTEL’s Riverside Lobby opens around the clock. Kirkenes lists sauna hours of 06:00–09:00, while Arctic SnowHotel provides sauna and shower access during morning and evening periods.
- Room access and storage: Arctic SnowHotel’s bedrooms become private for overnight guests from 21:00. Its heated lounge includes changing and storage facilities, plus alternative beds if a guest finds the cold stay uncomfortable.
- Aurora services: Rovaniemi’s alerts depend on a display appearing. Kirkenes states that it does not provide an aurora alarm, making this a property-specific service.
Transport and Day Visits Broaden the Travel Offer
Access arrangements help determine which dates work within a wider holiday. Kiruna Lappland lists direct Copenhagen–Kiruna services from 17 December 2026 to 7 March 2027, providing a published transport window for Swedish Lapland itineraries.

Zermatt requires more detailed arrival planning. Overnight guests travel on the Gornergrat railway to Rotenboden, meet their guides and walk to the igloos. The operator specifies a fixed meeting arrangement. Access is unavailable after the mountain railway closes, and railway tickets are excluded from the overnight price. A backpack is recommended because wheeled suitcases are unsuitable for the approach. Outdoor activities, including whirlpool use, depend on the weather.
Day visits provide another way to include these properties in a travel programme. Arctic SnowHotel’s visiting packages include return transport from Rovaniemi, with selected dining or sauna experiences. Sorrisniva offers guided visits booked in advance, while Kirkenes advertises daytime tours and evening visits with dinner.
For the travel trade, these published products support several itinerary formats: a daytime ice-art excursion, a dinner visit, a single cold night, or a longer stay combining heated accommodation and outdoor activities. The appropriate combination depends on the operating dates, room category, transport schedule and inclusions attached to the booking.
