NOAA says strengthening El Niño is expected to disrupt conditions that normally support Atlantic hurricanes, particularly by increasing vertical wind shear and suppressing convection.
The current hurricane drought makes 1941 an important historical comparison.
NOAA’s Atlantic hurricane reanalysis found that a 1941 cyclone previously believed to have reached hurricane strength earlier in September actually did not become a hurricane until 06 UTC on 21 September. The reanalysis moved hurricane formation 66 hours later than originally recorded.
That means every additional hurricane-free day in September 2026 moves the season closer to an exceptionally late historical benchmark.

However, travellers should not interpret the comparison as proof that no hurricanes will form. The official Atlantic season continues until 30 November, and NOAA stresses that even a below-normal season can produce a damaging hurricane or tropical storm.
The short-term outlook remains reassuring.
The National Hurricane Center’s 12 September Tropical Weather Outlook stated that tropical cyclone formation was not expected during the next seven days across the North Atlantic, Caribbean Sea and Gulf.
Longer-range conditions are less certain.
NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center says the Atlantic Main Development Region should remain broadly unfavourable because strong El Niño-related atmospheric conditions continue to suppress tropical cyclone formation. However, it identifies unsettled weather in the western Atlantic near or north of the Bahamas as an area that could provide an opportunity for tropical or subtropical development.
For Florida and Bahamas travellers, this is therefore a longer-range development possibility, not an active NHC storm warning.
Hawaii provides another striking storm-history comparison, although it measures landfall rather than the timing of hurricane formation.
NOAA records show Hurricane Iniki struck Kauaʻi on 11 September 1992 as a Category 4 hurricane. It remains the strongest hurricane on record to have directly affected Hawaii in that event, and NOAA has noted that no hurricane had made landfall in the state since Iniki.
That gives Hawaii a roughly 34-year hurricane-landfall drought by September 2026.
For travellers, the long gap does not remove hurricane risk. Tropical systems can still produce dangerous surf, rainfall and winds without a direct landfall.
Japan offers another official comparison.
The Japan Meteorological Agency reported that no tropical cyclone made landfall in Japan during 2020. It was the first zero-landfall year since 2008 and only the fifth such occurrence since records began in 1951.
JMA’s modern 1991–2020 climatology shows Japan averages about three tropical cyclone landfalls each year, demonstrating how unusual a zero-landfall season is.
The Atlantic, Hawaii and Japan examples tell different stories.
The Atlantic is experiencing an unusually late start to hurricane activity. Hawaii has maintained a decades-long hurricane-landfall drought. Japan’s 2020 season demonstrated how rare an entire year without a typhoon landfall can be.
None of these records guarantees future safety.
The immediate Atlantic outlook remains quiet, but the season continues through November. NOAA’s longer-range western Atlantic signal also means travellers heading to Florida, the Bahamas or nearby destinations should continue checking official NHC and local weather alerts even during this historically subdued season.
