Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan Boost Cross-Border Tourism as FlyArystan Links Almaty, Urgench and Khiva with New Cultural Travel Packages Before 2026 Flights

FlyArystan and Arda Khiva are entering into a partnership to promote tourism between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan as part of their collaboration that will take place prior to the beginning of the scheduled flight service from Almaty to Urgench on 3 September 2026. Three- and four-day packages will include not only airfare but also transfers, excursions, and accommodation. The purpose of the initiative is to facilitate visits for people during the short periods of time by combining tourism products and flights on Thursdays and Sundays.
Why Has FlyArystan Partnered with Arda Khiva?
The two organisations signed a Memorandum of Cooperation during a press conference in Khiva attended by the Khorezm regional administration, local tour operators and media representatives. The agreement creates a formal basis for joint tourism marketing before the new air connection begins.
Rather than promoting airline seats separately from destination experiences, the partners intend to present the route as a complete travel opportunity. FlyArystan will provide direct connectivity, while Arda Khiva and participating tour operators will assemble accommodation, transport and sightseeing services. The model should reduce the planning burden for travellers unfamiliar with western Uzbekistan.
When Will the Almaty–Urgench Flights Operate?
FlyArystan’s Almaty–Urgench–Almaty service is scheduled to operate from 3 September until 22 October 2026. Flights will run twice weekly on Thursdays and Sundays, using Airbus A320 aircraft. The timetable has been designed to support both weekend-style leisure journeys and longer weekday programmes. Urgench serves as the principal aviation gateway to Khiva and the wider Khorezm region. FlyArystan describes Khiva as being approximately a 30- to 40-minute drive from Urgench, allowing international passengers to transfer relatively quickly from the airport to the historic destination.

How Will the New Packages Simplify Travel?
Arda Khiva has prepared packages specifically around the airline’s operating days. Leisure travellers can arrive on a Thursday and depart on Sunday, creating a compact three- or four-day cultural holiday without arranging each element separately. The packages are expected to include hotel accommodation, airport transfers, guided excursions and tickets to scheduled events.
Separate options are being developed for individual visitors and organised groups. Business travellers and event organisers will have another structure available. They can arrive on Sunday and leave on Thursday, combining professional activities with time to explore Khiva and its cultural landmarks during the working week.

What Cultural Experiences Are Planned for Autumn 2026?
The partnership will be supported by an autumn programme featuring gastronomic, craft and ethnic events at Arda Khiva and historic locations across the city. These activities are intended to give travellers a broader experience of Khorezm beyond conventional monument visits.
Local cuisine, artisan production and regional customs could become important components of the packages. Tourists may therefore be able to combine architectural sightseeing with food events, handicraft demonstrations and cultural performances. The programme also gives local operators an opportunity to build itineraries around confirmed events rather than offering accommodation and transport alone. Final event calendars and package prices have not yet been published.

Why Is Khiva a Powerful Destination for the Route?
Khiva’s main attraction is Itchan Kala, the walled inner town recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. UNESCO describes it as a coherent and well-preserved example of Central Asian Muslim architecture, protected by brick walls rising to about ten metres.
Its principal landmarks include mosques, madrasas, mausoleums and nineteenth-century palaces. The old city once served caravans preparing to cross the desert towards Iran, giving it an important position within historic regional trade networks. The concentrated layout means visitors can experience a substantial collection of monuments within a relatively compact area, making Khiva particularly suitable for shorter cultural breaks.
How Large Is the Arda Khiva Tourism Complex?
Opened in 2025, Arda Khiva is a major modern tourism development created alongside the region’s historic attractions. Uzbekistan’s government states that the complex contains 17 hotels and guesthouses, nine restaurants, indoor and outdoor water parks and a 3,000-seat amphitheatre.
Its facilities also include cinemas, concert halls, exhibition spaces, retail outlets, market stalls, artisan houses, an oriental bazaar, a jewellery centre and a riverside promenade. This combination of accommodation, dining, entertainment and crafts allows the complex to support organised stays without competing directly with the architectural character of Itchan Kala. 7The site covers 24.5 hectares and has also been designated as a car-free tourism zone.

Can the Partnership Support Khorezm’s Tourism Economy?
The cooperation could direct additional spending towards hotels, restaurants, transport operators, guides, artisans and cultural-event organisers across the Khorezm region. Travellers using complete packages are likely to purchase several local services during one visit rather than simply passing through Urgench.
Government planning for Arda Khiva initially projected that the development could attract an additional one million visitors annually, increase service activity and support at least 2,000 jobs. Those projections apply to the wider complex rather than the FlyArystan partnership alone. Nevertheless, improved air access from Kazakhstan could support these broader ambitions by opening another source market for western Uzbekistan.
What Does Almaty Gain from the Agreement?
The memorandum is designed to promote Almaty as well as Khorezm. Marketing activity will therefore operate in both directions. Uzbek travellers will gain a direct route to Kazakhstan’s largest city, while Kazakhstani passengers will receive easier access to Urgench and Khiva.
Almaty combines an urban cultural environment with nearby mountain attractions, making it suitable for leisure breaks and extended itineraries. Kazakhstan’s municipal tourism authority is working to increase the city’s recognition in domestic and international visitor markets. Joint promotions could encourage Uzbek passengers to view Almaty not only as a transport hub but as a destination for city experiences, food, shopping and access to the surrounding mountain landscape.
Will the Flights Connect with Wider Asian Markets?
FlyArystan plans to operate the Urgench route under a codeshare agreement with Air Astana, subject to the necessary regulatory approvals. The arrangement is expected to provide connecting possibilities through Almaty towards Air Astana destinations in China and South Korea.
This could extend the route’s relevance beyond direct Kazakhstan–Uzbekistan travel. Passengers from wider Asian markets may eventually be able to connect through Almaty to western Uzbekistan using one coordinated itinerary. FlyArystan already serves Uzbekistan through routes linking Almaty with Samarkand and Astana with Tashkent. Urgench will add another regional gateway and deepen the airline’s Central Asian network.

How Is FlyArystan Promoting Budget Cultural Travel?
During the Khiva press conference, FlyArystan presented its services and offered participants an early look at a new travel vlog focusing on Urgench and ancient Khiva. The content is intended to demonstrate how travellers can visit the region using a low-cost airline model.
FlyArystan’s basic fare allows passengers to select additional services according to their requirements. The airline’s original route announcement stated that the base fare includes one item of hand baggage weighing up to seven kilograms, within the specified size limits. Travellers booking packages should confirm whether checked baggage, seat selection, meals and transfers are included or must be purchased separately.
What Should Travellers Check Before Booking?
The service is currently scheduled as a limited seasonal operation, ending on 22 October 2026. Travellers should therefore verify departure dates, fare conditions and package availability before confirming accommodation or event tickets. Passengers should also review Uzbekistan’s entry, customs and baggage requirements. FlyArystan warns that importing or using camera-equipped drones without special permission is prohibited, with unauthorised devices potentially subject to confiscation.
Details concerning individual package prices, participating hotels and the complete autumn cultural calendar remain pending. Bookings should be made through official airline, tourism-complex or authorised tour-operator channels once final products become available.
A New Tourism Corridor Emerges Between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan
FlyArystan – Arda Khiva is an example of how airlines and destinations can cooperate to convert a flight route into a fully-fledged tourist product. The access will be increased by direct flights; however, a coordinated effort will make access more convenient with accommodation, transfers, excursions and events being planned accordingly.
Kazakhstani tourists will get access to the architecture listed by UNESCO in Khiva and the culture of Khorezmians while Uzbek tourists will get direct access to the mountains of Almaty. The flights start from September and the packages fit the schedule perfectly. Thus, the cooperation might become an example of a new cultural corridor between two Central Asian tourism markets.
