The Chinese side of Mount Qomolangma welcomed 13,764 international visitors in 2024, drawing travelers from Singapore, Malaysia, Germany, and France, as stated by the culture and tourism bureau of Dingri County in the Xizang Autonomous Region.

This marked a significant increase, more than doubling the number of visitors compared to 2023. The surge reflects the growth in international travel following China’s eased visa requirements, according to reports.

Tourism revenue in Dingri reached an estimated 420 million yuan ($57.3 million) in 2024, showing a 10.3% increase from the previous year, as per the bureau’s data.

Recognized globally for its breathtaking landscapes, Mount Qomolangma—known as Mount Everest in the West—is the world’s highest peak. Dingri County has leveraged this natural wonder through the Qomolangma Scenic Area to boost its local economy.

The rise in tourism has brought economic benefits to the community. Residents like Chodan, a university graduate who returned to her hometown, have found new opportunities. Starting in 2022 by renting tents to visitors at the Qomolangma Base Camp, she later expanded her venture to include a guesthouse within the scenic area, earning close to 500,000 yuan in 2024.

The Qomolangma Scenic Area now boasts 91 hotels and guesthouses, capable of hosting over 2,800 visitors daily, according to local authorities.
