TUI Forest Navarra Restores Wildfire-Damaged Bardenas Reales, Boosting their Eco-Tourism, Biodiversity Recovery and Sustainable Tourism Growth in Spain

In Spain, in the north of the country, the municipality of Arguedas has undertaken a great ecological rehabilitation project to repair damaged forests in the region of the Bardenas Reales Natural Park that is famous for its nature tourism. The undertaking was initiated due to the destructive fires of 2022 that resulted in the loss of significant forest areas, which had negative impacts on the biodiversity of the area as well as tourism in the park. TUI Forest Navarra, the project, will be conducted under a cooperation between the TUI Care Foundation, Land Life Company, the Municipality of Arguedas, and the Government of Navarra.

The Bardenas Reales Natural Park attracts more than 400,000 visitors annually, making it a cornerstone of nature-based tourism in Spain. Nearby, the Sendaviva Nature Park welcomes approximately 170,000 visitors each year, many of them families and school groups, reinforcing the region’s importance as a hub for environmental education and outdoor recreation. The wildfire affected around 862 hectares of land, leaving ecosystems vulnerable to erosion, habitat loss, and biodiversity decline—posing a direct challenge to the future of eco-tourism in the region.

Large-Scale Ecological Restoration Driving Sustainable Tourism Recovery

The TUI Forest Navarra programme is a 26-month restoration project designed to rehabilitate fire-damaged land and rebuild ecological balance across the region. It focuses on restoring more than 90 hectares of affected land, supported by a wider 320-hectare hydrological and forestry plan.

Key restoration actions include:

• Planting over 33,930 native trees
• Supporting natural regeneration of approximately 33,000 additional trees
• Implementing erosion control systems and land stabilisation measures
• Restoring native biodiversity and strengthening ecosystem resilience
• Enhancing long-term forest health through selective thinning of pine areas

These interventions are designed not only to restore nature but also to ensure the region remains a viable and attractive eco-tourism destination in the future.

A key component of the project is the restoration of wildlife habitats, which are essential for maintaining the region’s eco-tourism appeal. The initiative includes the creation of nesting sites for species such as lesser kestrels and little owls, along with insect hotels and artificial water points to support ecosystem recovery.

These biodiversity-focused interventions enhance the region’s ecological richness, directly contributing to the quality of eco-tourism experiences. Wildlife recovery is expected to play a major role in restoring visitor interest in nature-based activities such as birdwatching, hiking, and environmental photography.

The project is also deeply rooted in community engagement, with more than 1,400 local residents expected to participate in restoration activities. Around 10 local jobs will be created through the initiative, supporting long-term environmental management and tourism development.

Community involvement includes student planting programmes, intergenerational knowledge-sharing sessions, and collaboration with Sendaviva Nature Park. These activities help build environmental awareness while strengthening the link between local communities and eco-tourism development. By integrating residents into conservation efforts, the project ensures that tourism growth remains inclusive and community-driven.

The project also supports active tourism through its sponsorship of the Extreme Bardenas cycling race, which attracts around 1,500 participants annually, reinforcing the region’s identity as a destination for adventure and nature-based tourism.
