OUTRIGGER Resorts & Hotels, World Ocean Month, OUTRIGGER Zone Day, and ocean conservation were placed at the centre of a month-long environmental campaign that highlighted the growing role of the hospitality sector in protecting marine ecosystems across some of the world’s most iconic coastal destinations. Throughout June, a series of restoration projects, community partnerships and volunteer-driven initiatives were carried out across Hawai’i, Fiji, Thailand, the Maldives and Mauritius, reinforcing the company’s long-standing commitment to sustainable tourism and environmental stewardship.

The culmination of the campaign was marked by the 10th Annual OUTRIGGER Zone Day, which was hosted at the Waikīkī Aquarium in Hawai’i on June 27, 2026. The event brought together conservation experts, community organisations and volunteers in a collaborative effort designed to promote awareness of ocean health while encouraging practical action to restore fragile marine environments.

World Ocean Month Celebrated Through Hands-On Conservation

World Ocean Month was observed throughout June by OUTRIGGER Resorts & Hotels with a broad range of environmental initiatives that extended well beyond awareness campaigns. Instead, practical conservation projects were undertaken across several international destinations where the company operates beachfront resorts.

The month concluded with the 10th Annual OUTRIGGER Zone Day at the Waikīkī Aquarium in Hawai’i on June 27, 2026. The event served as both a celebration of environmental achievements and a platform through which community members, conservation specialists and volunteers could participate directly in projects aimed at preserving local ecosystems.

More than 20 conservation-focused organisations participated in the event by hosting educational and interactive booths. Among those represented were the Polynesian Voyaging Society, NOAA, Kuleana Coral Restoration and the University of Hawai’i Sea Grant College Program, together with several other environmental organisations committed to protecting marine biodiversity and coastal habitats.

Volunteers Played a Central Role in Restoring Hawai’i’s Waterways

One of the most significant activities undertaken during the event was delivered through the Genki Ala Wai Project partnership. This initiative focused on improving water quality within the Ala Wai Canal by using naturally occurring microorganisms.

More than 2,000 Genki Balls were carefully rolled by volunteers before being introduced into the canal. These specially prepared mud balls contained beneficial microorganisms that were designed to help improve water quality through natural biological processes. The collaborative activity demonstrated how community participation could be combined with scientific innovation to support environmental restoration while educating participants about sustainable water management.

The project also highlighted how relatively simple volunteer activities could contribute to broader conservation objectives when organised through long-term partnerships between businesses, environmental organisations and local communities.

Global Conservation Projects Extended Beyond Hawai’i

The company’s World Ocean Month programme was not limited to Hawai’i. Environmental initiatives were simultaneously undertaken across multiple destinations where OUTRIGGER Resorts & Hotels maintains its beachfront presence.

In Fiji, coral planting activities were completed while new fish houses were constructed to help strengthen marine habitats and support aquatic biodiversity. These projects were designed to improve reef resilience while creating healthier environments for marine life to flourish.

In Thailand, mangrove reforestation formed another important component of the conservation programme. Mangrove ecosystems are widely recognised for protecting coastlines, supporting marine species and storing significant amounts of carbon. Their restoration continues to be regarded as an essential strategy for strengthening coastal resilience.

Meanwhile, reef preservation activities were carried out in the Maldives, where healthy coral reef systems remain essential for marine biodiversity as well as sustainable tourism. Marine debris clean-up operations were also organised in Mauritius, while beach clean-up programmes were conducted throughout Hawai’i to reduce coastal pollution and encourage greater environmental awareness among residents and visitors alike.

Together, these projects reflected a coordinated international conservation effort that extended across multiple regions while addressing environmental challenges unique to each destination.

Marine Ecosystem Protection Remains a Long-Term Commitment

According to Monica Salter, VP of Global Communications & Social Responsibility, the company’s beachfront locations provide a unique opportunity to recognise the close relationship between healthy oceans, thriving communities and meaningful travel experiences.

Through the OUTRIGGER Zone initiative, continued efforts have been directed towards protecting and restoring marine ecosystems that support the destinations where the company operates. The preservation of ocean environments has been regarded as essential not only for environmental sustainability but also for safeguarding tourism experiences that depend upon healthy coastlines and vibrant marine habitats.

This philosophy has continued to shape the company’s environmental strategy by placing conservation alongside hospitality as a shared responsibility rather than treating sustainability as a separate initiative.

OUTRIGGER Zone Continues to Build Environmental Partnerships

The OUTRIGGER Zone programme has remained an important part of the company’s environmental strategy since its introduction in 2014. Over the years, partnerships have been developed with conservation organisations, educational institutions, local communities and volunteers to support a variety of restoration projects focused on protecting coastal ecosystems.

Rather than concentrating on a single annual event, the programme has evolved into an ongoing platform through which environmental education, habitat restoration and community participation have been encouraged throughout the year. The continuation of these partnerships has enabled conservation initiatives to expand across multiple countries while strengthening collaboration between the tourism industry and environmental organisations.

As sustainability continues to become an increasingly important consideration for travellers, programmes such as OUTRIGGER Zone demonstrate how hospitality companies can actively contribute to protecting the natural environments that attract visitors from around the world.

Conservation and Tourism Continue to Move Forward Together

The World Ocean Month initiatives undertaken by OUTRIGGER Resorts & Hotels demonstrated how environmental responsibility can be integrated into hospitality operations across multiple international destinations. By combining volunteer participation, scientific partnerships and practical restoration projects, meaningful progress was supported in protecting oceans, coastlines and marine ecosystems.

From coral planting in Fiji and mangrove restoration in Thailand to reef preservation in the Maldives, marine debris removal in Mauritius and large-scale volunteer activities in Hawai’i, each initiative formed part of a broader commitment to safeguarding coastal environments for future generations.

With the OUTRIGGER Zone programme continuing to expand since its establishment in 2014, the company’s long-term investment in conservation has remained closely connected to its hospitality mission. As travellers increasingly value responsible tourism experiences, continued collaboration between resorts, conservation organisations and local communities is expected to play an increasingly important role in preserving the world’s most treasured marine destinations while ensuring that these extraordinary environments continue to be enjoyed for generations to come.
