The UK travel industry is gearing up for a significant increase in visitors during the August Bank Holiday period, as the most recent Trip Tracker report from VisitEngland indicates that 10.6 million people across the UK intend to take overnight vacations domestically. Such travel activity is anticipated to bring an estimated £4.3 billion to the national travel industry as hotels, sites of interest and local businesses and destinations benefit from the increased activity and spending over this important time of year.

The figures highlight continued demand for domestic breaks, with millions of travellers expected to explore destinations across England and the wider UK. However, planned overnight trips are slightly lower compared with previous years. In 2025, 11.2 million Brits intended to take an overnight UK holiday during the August bank holiday weekend, while the number stood at 11 million in 2024 and 9.7 million in 2023.

Despite the small decline, the expected travel activity could provide important support for tourism businesses, including accommodation providers, attractions, restaurants and local communities that rely heavily on bank holiday visitor spending.

The boost comes at a crucial time for the domestic tourism sector, which has experienced pressure from a reduction in overnight domestic trips during 2025. Coastal destinations have been among the hardest affected, with overnight visits to England’s seaside locations falling by 18% year-on-year.

The upcoming bank holiday weekend is therefore expected to play a key role in strengthening local tourism economies, encouraging spending across popular destinations and helping businesses recover from recent challenges in domestic travel demand.

Tourism Minister Stephanie Peacock said:

“It is brilliant that so many people are choosing to spend their August bank holiday weekend in the UK, whether enjoying the summer weather at our beautiful coastlines, or exploring our towns and cities.

“Domestic breaks truly help our local areas to thrive by boosting support for small, locally-owned businesses, strengthening social cohesion and promoting pride in where we live.

“It is also a great opportunity to make the most of the final weekend of our Great British Summer Savings scheme, allowing families to enjoy discounted access to attractions and leisure activities such as theme parks, soft play centres and cinemas, while also backing businesses who rely on footfall in the summer season.”

VisitEngland Chief Executive Patricia Yates said:

“It is very encouraging to see many of us are planning a domestic break for the August bank holiday weekend. From invigorating coastal walks, lively festivals, great pubs and boutique stays to art and culture, history and heritage, there is something for all tastes and budgets.

“Businesses will be looking to the long weekend for a critical late summer lift after what has been a very mixed year for many destinations. We can also see from our latest consumer research that the cost of living remains a concern. Brits are still keen to take their breaks, however many are booking last minute and wanting to save on accommodation, activities, eating out and searching for good value options. It is nail biting if you’re a small business, so do please get out and support our amazing destinations, first class attractions and local events this long weekend and beyond.”

The survey further revealed that an additional 5.8 million people remain undecided about taking an overnight holiday trip in England during the August bank holiday weekend. Many potential travellers are still waiting before making their final plans, with the weather forecast, availability of travel deals and special offers, and affordability emerging as the main factors influencing their decisions.

The uncertainty comes as the UK Government introduces its Great British Summer Savings scheme, an initiative designed to reduce the cost of family days out during the summer season while providing additional support to tourism businesses across the country.

VisitEngland’s broader research highlights the significant economic opportunity within domestic tourism. Even a small change in travel behaviour could create a major impact, with a 10% shift of the money currently spent by Brits on overseas holidays towards domestic breaks potentially generating an £8 billion annual boost for the UK economy.

Looking ahead, VisitEngland will launch the next stage of its coastal tourism campaign, ‘All on England’s Coast’, during autumn. Backed by a £2 million marketing investment, the campaign aims to encourage visitors to explore England’s coastal destinations during the quieter travel season while working with a commercial partner to increase bookings and strengthen local economies.

Tourism remains one of England’s most important economic sectors, contributing around £127 billion annually to the economy. The industry supports hundreds of thousands of businesses and provides employment for approximately 2.1 million people across the country, particularly benefiting rural communities, coastal towns and regional destinations.
