For the fourth consecutive year, Paris has been crowned the world’s most attractive city, according to the 2024 Top 100 City Destinations Index released by Euromonitor International. Paris, Madrid, and Rome have seen notable increases in visitor numbers, as international tourists return in full force. Tokyo, for its part, benefits from its unique blend of modernity and tradition, drawing millions of tourists seeking both cultural and contemporary experiences.

With the rise of responsible tourism, travelers are becoming more selective, seeking out hidden gems and less-visited destinations to avoid the overcrowded hotspots.

In terms of tourism policy, cities that offer incentives for sustainable travel practices, such as discounts for eco-friendly accommodation and public transport options, are seeing higher visitor satisfaction and retention. This trend aligns with the growing consumer preference for personalized travel experiences, particularly among Millennials and Generation Z, who prioritize cultural enrichment and personalized itineraries over mass tourism.

Global Trends in Tourism Spending and Growth

International tourism spending surged to USD1.9 trillion in 2024, and the average spend per arrival is projected to rise to USD1,264 by 2030. Key markets driving growth in inbound tourism spending include the Netherlands, China, and Poland. Cities that can leverage local events, festivals, and unique cultural offerings are well-positioned to capture the growing travel spend of both international and regional visitors.

While Paris leads the rankings, it is cities like Bangkok that are showing impressive growth. The Thai capital topped the list for international arrivals in 2024, surpassing 32 million trips. The city’s appeal lies not only in its cultural landmarks, street food, and vibrant nightlife but also in its focus on developing sustainable tourism practices to balance growth with environmental stewardship. Bangkok’s tourism infrastructure and its ability to attract a diverse range of tourists—from solo travelers to families and business visitors—has ensured its rise in global rankings.
