Australia’s Sunshine Coast Airport Takes Major Leap Towards 2027 Expansion With New Baggage Claim Facility

A new arrivals precinct and baggage claim facility has been opened at Sunshine Coast Airport in Queensland, Australia, marking another stage of its terminal transformation. The Sunshine Coast Airport expansion is being delivered to accommodate rising passenger demand and improve the experience of travellers arriving in the region.
A purpose-built baggage collection area, almost three times larger than its predecessor, has now been introduced, alongside a 92-metre carousel. With around 20,000 passengers arriving each week, the investment represents an important practical improvement to daily airport operations. The wider redevelopment is scheduled for completion in 2027, with further passenger facilities planned.
New Sunshine Coast Airport Arrivals Precinct Offers Passengers More Space
The Sunshine Coast Airport arrivals precinct has been designed around a more spacious baggage collection process. Travellers are now being directed to a purpose-built hall that is almost three times the size of the former arrivals and baggage claim area. The new carousel measures 92 metres, nearly twice the length of the previous system. More luggage can be delivered simultaneously, while additional room has been provided for passengers waiting beside the belt.
According to airport chief executive Chris Mills, the changes are intended to make collections smoother and more efficient. Upgraded toilets and seating have been included, and a new water-cooling system has been installed to serve the whole terminal. The Sunshine Coast Airport arrivals precinct is therefore being presented as an operational improvement, rather than simply a larger room. For passengers, the practical difference is expected to be felt when busy services arrive and numerous bags must be reclaimed.

Terminal Expansion Introduces More Gates, Modern Technology and Sustainable Infrastructure
Beyond the baggage hall, the Sunshine Coast Airport expansion will take the terminal footprint from 6,100 square metres to 11,750 square metres. The domestic departure lounge is set to increase from 1,250 to 3,750 square metres, while the number of departure gates will rise from five to seven. That gate increase represents a 40 per cent capacity uplift.
Passenger processing will also be updated through 18 self-service check-in kiosks and 10 automated bag drops. Sustainability measures have been incorporated into the plans, including mass timber, rainwater harvesting, expanded solar panels, energy-efficient heating, ventilation and air conditioning, and climate-sensitive design. The investment is an example of airport infrastructure development in Australia being accompanied by efforts to improve environmental efficiency across the terminal. Together, the proposed facilities are intended to serve more passengers through an expanded terminal without overlooking resource use. Completion of the full terminal programme has been scheduled for 2027.

Airport Construction Progresses While Passenger Operations Continue
Construction began in December 2025 and has been carried out while the airport has remained operational. McNab chief executive Kunjan Ganatra said careful planning and coordination had been required to limit disruption to passengers, airlines and daily activities throughout the project. Work within an operating airport has consequently been closely managed alongside normal services.
More than 2,300 people have already contributed to the development, with most trades and subcontractors drawn from the Sunshine Coast region. Collaboration has involved the airport, McNab, airline partners, Ansir Systems, Planned Performance and subcontractors. The workforce contribution adds a local dimension to Queensland aviation growth, while the completed arrivals hall provides a visible result of the construction programme. The work also shows how airport infrastructure development in Australia can be undertaken while scheduled passenger operations continue. Local representatives connected the investment with improved regional transport, employment and opportunities for businesses, without announcing additional economic forecasts.

Rising Passenger Numbers Highlight Queensland Aviation Growth and Tourism Connectivity
Approximately 1.8 million passengers were welcomed during the 2025–26 financial year, and 2.4 million are projected by 2030. Sydney and Melbourne account for 88 per cent of airline seats to and from the airport. During the FY26 holiday period, around 240 flights a week were reported, alongside record capacity on Sydney and Melbourne routes. These figures reflect Queensland aviation growth and the airport’s role in Sunshine Coast tourism.
The airport is served by Air New Zealand, Alliance, Jetstar, Qantas and Virgin Australia. Connections are identified with Adelaide, Auckland, Cairns, Melbourne and Sydney, while Singapore is reached via Bali. For Sunshine Coast tourism, these links provide access for visitors travelling from domestic and international markets. Sunshine Coast Council Mayor Rosanna Natoli described transport links as important to regional development. State Member for Maroochydore Fiona Simpson similarly associated continued investment with local jobs, visitor access and the needs of a growing community.
Sunshine Coast Airport Transformation Moves Towards 2027 Completion
The opening of the upgraded baggage claim facility marks a completed stage in the Sunshine Coast Airport expansion, rather than the end of construction. Arriving passengers are already being served by a larger hall, a longer carousel and improved amenities, while additional check-in, gate and lounge capacity remains part of the wider programme.
The development has been supported by local workers and coordinated around continuing airline operations. With annual traffic projected to reach 2.4 million by 2030, the investment is being positioned to serve future demand across the growing region. The overall terminal transformation remains scheduled for completion in 2027.
