The Alpine destinations in Switzerland are creating a new image for the month of September by offering sports-themed vacations via golfing, mountain trail running, and mountaineering activities. Three prime examples of places where this is happening include Crans-Montana, Zermatt, and Jungfrau. It is quite important to mention here that this is an appropriate time when these places are hosting a variety of sporting events, along with offering great infrastructure of mountains and trails. As the days of summer are coming to an end, the cooler weather makes the destination more suitable for sports activities.

Crans-Montana Gets a Golf-Led September Boost

Crans-Montana opened September 2026 with the Omega European Masters, held from September 3 to 6 at the Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club. The tournament is part of the DP World Tour and brings professional golf into one of Switzerland’s most recognisable Alpine settings.

The tournament has a strong tourism dimension because spectators and travelling golf enthusiasts can combine the competition with resort stays, mountain excursions and the wider range of outdoor activities available around Crans-Montana.

The destination also provides a natural bridge between golf and trail experiences. The Crans-Montana area has dedicated mountain routes, while the wider Valais landscape provides access to hiking and high-altitude recreation.

Golf Becomes Part of a Wider Mountain Holiday

For visitors arriving for the Omega European Masters, the appeal extends beyond the golf course. Crans-Montana sits at around 1,500 metres and offers a resort environment where sport, dining, wellness and mountain activities can be combined within a single stay.

The tournament itself also encourages public-transport access. Spectators can travel by train to Sierre before continuing to Crans-Montana by funicular or bus, with free local shuttles operating during the event.

That connectivity makes it easier for travellers to build car-free sports holidays around the tournament.

Trail Running Takes Over the Mountains

Just days after the golf tournament, Crans-Montana moved into another major sporting period. The Wildstrubel by UTMB took place from September 10 to 13, bringing a major trail-running event to the Swiss Alps.

Crans-Montana’s tourism information says the 2026 event brings around 8,000 runners into the Alpine landscape across different race formats.

The timing creates an unusual overlap between two very different audiences. Golf travellers arrive for a major professional tournament, while trail runners, endurance athletes and spectators arrive for mountain races only days later.

For hotels, restaurants, transport operators and activity providers, that creates a broader September sports calendar rather than dependence on one event.

Zermatt Strengthens the Trail Running Offer

Zermatt is another important part of Switzerland’s growing trail-running proposition. Switzerland Tourism lists Zermatt among its challenging trail-running destinations, with routes designed around dramatic Alpine terrain.

The destination also hosted a trail-running programme from September 8 to 11, 2026, combining running with functional exercises in the Alpine landscape. The sessions were designed for different ability levels and included moderate climbs around Zermatt.

This reflects the broadening of trail tourism beyond competitive races. Travellers do not necessarily need to enter an ultra-marathon to participate. Guided runs, training sessions and scenic trail circuits allow recreational visitors to experience the same mountain environment at a more manageable pace.

Jungfrau Turns Panoramas Into the Route

The Jungfrau region adds another dimension through its network of mountain trails, villages and high-altitude transport.

Destinations around Grindelwald, Wengen and Mürren allow visitors to combine trail running and hiking with mountain railways and cable cars. This makes it possible to create one-way routes, gain altitude without climbing the entire elevation on foot and return through a different valley or village.

For content creators and mountain-lifestyle travellers, the appeal is also visual. Alpine ridgelines, glaciers, lakes and villages provide a constantly changing backdrop, while the infrastructure allows visitors to reach viewpoints that would otherwise require much longer ascents.

Cable Cars Change the Active Travel Equation

Switzerland’s mountain transport network is particularly important to this type of tourism. Cable cars, mountain railways and funiculars allow travellers to structure activities around their preferred level of exertion.

A trail runner can take transport to a higher starting point and run downhill or across a ridge. A group with different fitness levels can use mountain transport to meet at the same viewpoint, while cyclists and hikers can create itineraries that combine mechanical uplift with active travel.

This flexibility makes Alpine sports more accessible without removing the physical element that attracts outdoor travellers.

September Becomes a Distinct Travel Window

Switzerland’s September sports calendar shows how Alpine destinations can build demand between peak summer hiking and winter ski seasons.

Crans-Montana combines the Omega European Masters with Wildstrubel by UTMB, while Zermatt maintains a strong trail-running identity and the Jungfrau region continues to offer extensive mountain routes.

The result is a more diversified autumn proposition. Visitors can arrive for a sporting event, extend their stay for hiking or trail running, use cable cars to reach higher terrain and spend evenings in resort restaurants and hotels.

A New Alpine Sports Circuit

The Alpine tourism narrative of Switzerland is fast evolving into something more than what is traditionally associated with Alpine activities such as summer hiking and winter skiing. Sports activities such as golf in Crans Montana, trail running in Valais, high-mountain trails in Zermatt and Jungfrau region panoramas are contributing to the September sports season. The appeal to the tourist is that there will be both organised and independent sports activities on offer. A golf competition can serve as a means to a mountain vacation, while an ultra-trail race can provide the traveler with knowledge about the trails he can visit later on in his own pace.
