In May 2024, the Québec government revealed the establishment of Espace Aéro, a dynamic aerospace innovation zone designed to propel the province’s aerospace sector into a new era. As the first significant step in this ambitious initiative, ADM Aéroports de Montréal (ADM) is excited to announce the acquisition of a strategic site for the Mirabel hub, located within the thriving YMX International Aerocity of Mirabel.

This pivotal move will see the transformation of a 17,925 m² facility, previously owned by Lion Electric, into a state-of-the-art aerospace innovation centre. By repurposing this building, ADM aims to foster cutting-edge advancements in aerospace technology, contributing to the growth and diversification of Québec’s aerospace industry.

The new aerospace innovation centre will play a vital role in accelerating the development of Espace Aéro, ensuring that Québec remains at the forefront of global aerospace innovation. With this acquisition, ADM Aéroports de Montréal is not only strengthening the region’s position as an aerospace hub but also paving the way for future collaborations and breakthroughs within the sector.

The Mirabel hub will serve as a key cornerstone for Espace Aéro, reinforcing Québec’s commitment to supporting innovation and fostering the continued growth of its aerospace industry. As of December 2024, this new development will offer unparalleled opportunities for companies, entrepreneurs, and professionals in the aerospace sector to collaborate, innovate, and thrive.

“ADM already had plans to construct a building at YMX to house the Espace Aéro innovation centre. This business opportunity comes at just the right time and will help move this project forward even faster,” said Yves Beauchamp, President and CEO of ADM. “In addition to its strategic location on our site, this building meets all our criteria for carrying out the hub’s activities and thus promoting the development and commercialization of new technologies.”

The new aerospace innovation centre at Mirabel, part of Espace Aéro, is set to become a central hub for collaboration in the aerospace sector. This forward-thinking facility will unite manufacturers, government and institutional partners, academic and training institutions, researchers, and students to focus on groundbreaking innovation in two key areas: aviation decarbonization and advanced air mobility (AAM).

Designed to catalyze progress, the building will provide a collaborative environment where these diverse groups can come together to address the pressing challenges of the aerospace industry. By focusing on sustainable technologies and the future of air travel, Espace Aéro aims to be at the forefront of revolutionizing the industry.

At the prestigious Farnborough Airshow, ADM Aéroports de Montréal (ADM) unveiled a significant $1 million contribution toward the creation of the Advanced Air Mobility Research Chair. This research chair will specifically explore the role of digital twins in advancing AAM, helping to drive innovation in this emerging field.

In a further testament to its leadership in aerospace innovation, ADM also shared its involvement in the establishment of Canada’s first-ever Institute of Advanced Air Mobility (AAM), in collaboration with ICAO. The institute will focus on research and training in AAM and will bring together approximately 30 professors specializing in the field. This initiative is designed to address the growing demand for electric propulsion technologies and the enhancement of passenger services, both of which are critical to the evolution of air transport.
