Abu Dhabi and Calgary are emerging as two important points in Etihad Airways’ expanding international network as the UAE carrier strengthens its presence across North America in 2026. The airline is scheduled to connect Abu Dhabi with eight destinations across the United States and Canada this year, while its upcoming Calgary service will create a new nonstop link between the Middle East and Western Canada. Aviation schedule data cited in industry reports puts Etihad’s planned North American capacity at 998,282 round-trip seats in 2026, about 25.7% higher than its 2025 level.
The expansion marks a significant step in Etihad’s efforts to build Abu Dhabi into a more powerful international connecting hub. Its North American network now covers Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, New York and Washington, D.C. in the United States, alongside Toronto and Calgary in Canada. Etihad’s own destination information confirms the six U.S. cities currently forming its American network.
For travellers, however, the numbers tell only part of the story. The bigger development is the growing ability to use Abu Dhabi as a gateway between North America and destinations across Asia, the Middle East and beyond. Etihad operates a network of more than 100 destinations, meaning passengers arriving in Abu Dhabi from North America can continue their journey through a broad international network.
Among the new developments, Calgary carries particular importance for leisure travellers. Etihad has announced that its first-ever nonstop service between Abu Dhabi and Calgary International Airport will begin on November 3, 2026. The route is scheduled to operate four times a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays using a Boeing 787-9. Calgary Airports has independently confirmed the same launch date and operating pattern.

The new service will establish what Calgary Airports describes as the only direct connection between Western Canada and the United Arab Emirates. For travellers, that could significantly simplify journeys between Alberta and the Gulf region while creating onward connections through Abu Dhabi to destinations across Etihad’s international network.
Calgary’s importance is also closely tied to tourism. The city acts as a major gateway to the Canadian Rockies, including destinations such as Banff and Lake Louise. A direct Abu Dhabi-Calgary service therefore has implications beyond business travel, potentially making Alberta’s mountain destinations easier to reach for visitors from the UAE, India, the wider Middle East and Asian markets.
The new connection arrives as international aviation activity around Calgary continues to strengthen. According to the Government of Alberta’s Economic Dashboard, Calgary International Airport recorded 175,384 international air visitors in July 2026, representing a 1.9% increase compared with July 2025. The province’s broader aviation data also tracks millions of passengers moving through Calgary and Edmonton airports each month.
At the national level, Canada’s Transport Ministry has also highlighted the importance of expanding international air connectivity. Transport Canada’s latest annual reporting noted that international sectors have been a major driver of post-pandemic passenger growth and that expanded air-service agreements are intended to provide greater choice for travellers and shippers.
That wider trend makes Etihad’s Calgary entry particularly relevant. Rather than simply adding another airline connection, the route creates a new long-haul corridor between two regions with strong tourism, business and investment links.
Calgary is not the only part of Etihad’s 2026 strategy attracting attention. Chicago has also received a major capacity increase, with the airline moving to double-daily service on the route. The additional frequency gives travellers more flexibility when planning connections through Abu Dhabi, particularly those continuing towards destinations in India and Asia.
Charlotte is another significant addition to the network. Etihad launched service to the North Carolina city in 2026, giving the airline a stronger presence in the southeastern United States. Its current schedule information shows nonstop service between Abu Dhabi and Charlotte, further broadening the geographic reach of the network.
Together, these changes mean Etihad is no longer concentrating its North American presence around a handful of traditional gateway cities. Instead, the airline is building a wider network that stretches from the northeastern United States to the Southeast, Midwest and Western Canada.
Indian travellers could be among the major beneficiaries of this growth.
Etihad’s U.S. network is connected to its wider Indian and Asian network through Abu Dhabi, creating potential one-stop itineraries between Indian cities and North American destinations. The airline currently markets flights between the United States and several destinations across India and Asia, reinforcing Abu Dhabi’s role as a connecting point rather than simply an endpoint.
For a traveller from India heading to the United States, Canada or even Western Canada, this gives another alternative to traditional European or other Middle Eastern hubs.
Calgary could be particularly attractive for travellers planning a Canadian holiday centred on nature and outdoor experiences. Instead of entering Canada through an eastern gateway and continuing westward, visitors can arrive directly in Alberta and begin their trip closer to the Rockies.
The increase in flights does not change Canada’s immigration or entry requirements. Travellers should check whether they require a visitor visa or an electronic travel authorization before booking their journey. Canada’s official immigration portal provides the applicable requirements based on nationality and method of arrival.
International arrivals at Calgary can also use Canada’s Advance Declaration system through the ArriveCAN app, allowing eligible travellers to complete their customs and immigration declaration before reaching the airport. Calgary International Airport is among the Canadian airports participating in the programme.
For travellers watching the global aviation map, Etihad’s North American expansion is more than a capacity increase. It represents a deliberate attempt to make Abu Dhabi a bridge between North America and some of the world’s fastest-growing travel markets, while Calgary gives the airline a new western gateway into Canada.
And for visitors dreaming of the Canadian Rockies, the change is especially tangible. Starting in November, the journey from Abu Dhabi to Calgary will no longer require an intermediate North American stop. With a direct flight, a growing international network beyond Abu Dhabi and Alberta’s mountain country waiting on the other side, one of Canada’s most spectacular tourism regions is about to become considerably easier to reach from the Gulf and beyond.
Editorial note: The 998,282-seat figure is reported from aviation schedule data and should be attributed to industry capacity analysis rather than described as an official Etihad announcement. Etihad and Calgary Airports’ official announcements currently give November 3, 2026 as the Calgary launch date.
