Horseshoe Bay Resort has long positioned itself as a high-end destination rather than a conventional leisure stay. The property offers an extensive range of experiences for visitors, including three full 18-hole golf courses (54 holes in total), professional golf instruction through its dedicated academy, and a wide selection of recreational activities. Guests can also enjoy water-based sports on the lake, racquet facilities, refined dining options, and a lively sports bar environment designed for evening entertainment and social gatherings.

Established over five decades ago in Texas Hill Country along the shoreline of Lake LBJ, and located roughly a 45-minute drive from Austin, the resort continues to evolve rather than remain static. Management has consistently invested in upgrades and refinements across its facilities, ensuring the property remains competitive within the luxury leisure market. This ongoing development is particularly evident in its golf offering, which has reached what many consider a peak phase in quality, design, and overall guest experience.

This year, audiences across the country will get a front-row view of high-quality golf as the Golf Channel’s Big Break makes its return with an entire season filmed at Horseshoe Bay Resort. The production will showcase all four of the resort’s courses, three of which are accessible to guests staying at the property. The fourth course, Summit Rock, remains exclusive to members. Known for its championship-level design, the courses at Horseshoe Bay have reached an even higher standard, with continuous enhancements further elevating the playing experience.

“The thing I’m most excited about is showcasing the variety and quality of golf that we have,” said Anthony Holder, PGA director of golf operations at Horseshoe Bay Resort.

Holder further noted that Big Break X Good Good, backed by the well-known golf influencer collective Good Good, highlights the vast 7,000-acre Texas Hill Country resort in a striking way. The feature also draws attention to its scenic lakeside setting and the full range of facilities spread across the expansive property.

“For a long time, I think we’ve been this sleepy little secret,” he said. ”I think hosting this season of Big Break, called Big Break X Good Good, really puts us out there in a resonant way that brands Horseshoe Bay Resort as a national bucket list destination.”

The upcoming broadcast is scheduled to air on Golf Channel in August, creating a connection between the long-established reality golf format and the rapidly expanding digital audience built by Good Good Golf on YouTube. The programming aims to merge traditional television viewership with a younger, online-first golf community, broadening the reach of the event significantly.

At Horseshoe Bay Resort, the timing of the television spotlight aligns closely with a wide range of ongoing enhancements across the property. Recent additions include a luxury dining yacht experience, an on-water adventure obstacle course, and a dedicated recreational playground. A major new development is the 10,000-square-foot Live Oak Pavilion, positioned near the Whitewater Putting Course and adjacent to the resort’s 250-room tower hotel. The pavilion has been designed as a flexible venue capable of hosting award ceremonies, corporate functions, and family gatherings, strengthening the resort’s event-hosting capacity.

From a golf operations perspective, leadership at the resort highlights a blend of human capital and infrastructure investment as the key drivers of improvement. The golf department benefits from a long-standing team of employees whose experience has fostered strong internal coordination, clear communication channels, and consistently high operational standards.

Management continues to refine what is described as a more proactive guest experience model, focusing on anticipating player needs rather than reacting to them. This approach is supported by an internal culture that encourages balance between professional responsibilities and personal well-being, with the intention of improving creativity, service quality, and overall productivity across the workforce.

Significant financial reinvestment has also been directed into the resort’s golf assets. The property features a collection of courses originally designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., and these have undergone a series of phased upgrades. Major renovation work was completed on Apple Rock and Ram Rock during 2018 and 2019, including enhancements to greens complexes, cart pathways, retaining structures, water features, and tee box levelling. Earlier improvements to Slick Rock were carried out in 2015, bringing similar infrastructure upgrades to that course as well.

The improvement programme remains active with several ongoing maintenance and enhancement projects. These include refurbishment of restroom facilities on Apple Rock and Ram Rock, upgrades to teeing zones at the driving range, installation of a new roof for the Slick Rock cart storage facility, and a substantial tree management initiative valued at approximately $100,000 aimed at improving turf health across all courses. In addition, new bunker sand is being introduced to further elevate playing conditions.

Looking ahead, a major infrastructure overhaul is scheduled for 2027, when both Slick Rock and Ram Rock will undergo full irrigation system replacements, alongside additional bunker refinements and tee box adjustments. Apple Rock is expected to receive the same level of comprehensive work approximately four years later, ensuring a long-term cycle of renewal across the resort’s golf portfolio.

A key operational priority throughout all three courses is maintaining uniform playing conditions. Each course is built on a consistent agronomic foundation, featuring bentgrass greens, zoysia grass collars, and 419 Bermuda grass across fairways and teeing areas. The overarching objective is to ensure that golfers experience similar green speeds, turf response, and course conditions regardless of which layout they are playing.

This consistency is further supported by a structured agronomy system, led by a director of agronomy who oversees individual course superintendents. This centralized management model allows for coordinated decision-making and standardised maintenance practices, helping to preserve a uniform playing experience across the entire resort golf offering.

“Every single year, we’re getting better and better and better, and finding new ways to enhance the playing experience,” Holder said.

A major recent enhancement has been the launch of the Horseshoe Bay Resort Golf Academy, led by Director of Instruction Bobby Steiner. The modern 3,000-square-foot facility features both indoor and outdoor teaching bays, along with eight covered practice stations fitted with Toptracer Range technology for advanced shot tracking and performance analysis.

Resort leadership initially introduced the academy to attract golfers seeking skill development through structured clinics, schools, and training sessions, while also elevating the member experience. However, its impact has exceeded expectations. The space is now actively integrated into men’s and women’s golf association events, nine-hole groups, and beginner programmes. Beyond regular instruction, it has also become a versatile venue for private gatherings, special events, and premium VIP experiences, adding new dimensions to the resort’s golf and hospitality offering.

“So we can put them there at the Golf Academy and do some fun contests,” Holder said. “The cherry on top is that it’s a great hook for prospective members when they’re doing their site tours and see all the technology and amenities in that large space.”

The concept behind Big Break X Good Good originated from the Good Good Lone Star Shootout, which was hosted at Horseshoe Bay last June in collaboration with the popular social media golf collective. The 12-hole showcase brought together Good Good creators and well-known sports personalities, including Reggie Bush and Matt Ryan, who competed in two-player teams. The event combined competitive play with exhibition-style golf and was further elevated by live entertainment, including a concert atmosphere.

“After having them here and seeing some of the contrast, and the variety of golf that we have, and also all of the amenities around that, they felt like it was a good fit and they felt really comfortable with us,” said Holder.

The upcoming Big Break competition will feature a lineup that includes several players from the Good Good group alongside ten additional male competitors. The stakes are significant, with the winner earning entry into the next Good Good Championship on the PGA Tour, scheduled for this November in Austin.

Beyond the tournament itself, Horseshoe Bay Resort continues to position itself as an expanding and evolving golf destination. Plans being discussed include the potential addition of new playing options, such as a full tour-level championship course and possibly a shorter layout designed specifically for resort guests, enhancing variety and accessibility across the property.
