The city of Rousse, located on the banks of the Danube River in Bulgaria, is experiencing a significant tourism boom thanks to the country’s recent full integration into the Schengen Area. This move has allowed Romanian tourists to travel freely across the border, without the hassle of border checks, boosting the local economy and transforming Rousse into a popular destination for Romanian visitors.

Increased Traffic and Economic Benefits

With Schengen integration now in place, the Danube Bridge that connects Rousse to Giurgiu, Romania, has seen a surge in traffic. According to data from Romania’s road management agency, around 160,000 cars crossed the border at Giurgiu between January and March 2025, compared to 128,000 during the same period in the previous year. This increase in traffic has been driven by Romanian visitors coming to Rousse for shopping, tourism, and leisure.

One of the key drivers of this tourism influx is the ease of travel. Romanian tourists no longer have to wait in long queues at border crossings, allowing for faster and more convenient trips. Christian, a Romanian visitor, explained that it’s now quicker and easier to travel to Rousse, where he enjoys buying cheaper cigarettes and perfumes. On weekends, long lines of cars with Romanian registration plates can be seen crossing the border, bringing with them not only tourists but also much-needed revenue to the city.

Tourism Impact on Local Businesses

Rousse’s economy is heavily reliant on tourism, with local business owners noting that Schengen integration has had a positive impact on the city. Todor Ratsov, a restaurant manager in Rousse, shared that Romanian tourists are particularly frequent, with many now able to visit more easily due to the border relaxation. As a result, restaurant menus in Rousse have been adapted to cater to the influx of Romanian visitors, with bilingual staff and Romanian-language menus becoming common.

The increased number of visitors has had noticeable effects on local businesses. Hotels and restaurants are seeing a boost in revenue, especially during peak tourism seasons. The Basarbovo monastery, a popular pilgrimage site just outside Rousse, has also witnessed a rise in visitors, particularly from Romania, as Romanian pilgrims continue to flock to the region.

Long-Term Benefits for Rousse

According to Adrian Nikolov, a senior economist at the Institute for Market Economics, the tourism boom in Rousse is primarily linked to Schengen membership. Over time, this increase in tourism is expected to translate into a greater turnover for hotels, restaurants, and local businesses, enhancing the city’s overall economic prosperity.

Moreover, the benefits of Schengen integration extend beyond tourism. Cross-border trade and logistics companies have also benefitted from reduced journey times and lower operational costs. Romanian carriers, for instance, save two to three hours on average when traveling to and from Rousse, which helps them save money and deliver goods more efficiently.

Cultural and Economic Revival

As Rousse continues to experience increased tourism, the city is evolving into a more dynamic and economically vibrant region. The blend of cultural attractions, such as its historic architecture and the Basarbovo monastery, combined with its growing hospitality sector, has positioned Rousse as an emerging hotspot for both leisure travelers and business visitors.
