Silja Europa To Begin New Chapter In The Netherlands In January 2025
Image generated with AiTallink Grupp has confirmed that its subsidiary, Tallink Silja OY, has entered into a fresh agreement with Slaapschepen Public BV, an organization representing Centraal Orgaan Opvang Asielzoekers (COA) in the Netherlands. Under this deal, the company’s vessel, Silja Europa, will be chartered to the Netherlands for a six-month period starting January 1, 2025. The contract also includes an option for extensions spanning 7, 6, and another 6 months, potentially extending the charter significantly.
Previously operating on the Tallinn-Helsinki cruise route, Silja Europa has been serving a new purpose since August 2022, providing temporary accommodation for asylum seekers in the Netherlands. This vessel has been continuously utilized for similar purposes over the past few years and will continue to operate under the new agreement with technical crew support from Tallink Grupp.
This latest arrangement underscores the growing trend of repurposing cruise vessels to address humanitarian needs, offering a vital solution to temporary housing challenges faced by governments worldwide.
