The serene and picturesque Sabie River valley in South Africa’s Mpumalanga Province recently hosted an extraordinary gathering of young innovators determined to reshape the future of tourism. Against the backdrop of rolling hills, cascading rivers, and lush landscapes, participants from across the country converged at a premier resort to collaborate, innovate, and showcase technological solutions designed to drive the tourism sector forward.

This groundbreaking initiative, launched in June 2025, provided students from diverse higher learning institutions an unprecedented opportunity to explore the intersection of technology, culture, and tourism. Forty-eight participants representing 21 universities and colleges were selected to take part in the G20 Tourism Hackathon, a platform dedicated to fostering digital solutions that promote sustainable growth, job creation, and inclusive development within the travel and tourism industry.

Over a two-day intensive program held from 10 to 11 September 2025, the hackathon challenged teams to conceptualize, design, and prototype Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutions that enhance the overall tourism experience. Participants were guided by industry experts and mentors, working collaboratively to ensure their innovations were practical, impactful, and aligned with the principles of people-centred tourism.

The challenge emphasized three core thematic areas:

Community-Based Tourism and Rural Inclusion – Focusing on connecting tourists with small operators in rural towns and villages, promoting hidden destinations, authentic experiences, and equitable opportunities for local communities.

Heritage and Cultural Tourism Innovation – Leveraging technology to preserve, promote, and bring cultural and historical sites to life, highlighting indigenous knowledge, African heritage, and sustainable tourism practices.

Throughout the hackathon, participants developed a variety of innovative prototypes and digital platforms. Each solution was rigorously evaluated against a set of criteria including creativity, feasibility, user experience, societal impact, and alignment with sustainable and inclusive tourism practices. The process not only tested technical skills but also encouraged critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving under real-world conditions.

The top three winning teams delivered standout projects that combined technology, cultural storytelling, and community engagement:

First Place – Developed a Hologram Hub, a digital platform allowing rural communities to showcase their cultural heritage, preserve traditions, and attract tourists to explore local villages.

Second Place – Created a solution integrating offline learning, AI support, and a global smart map, designed to increase the visibility and credibility of rural entrepreneurs, connecting them with international tourists.

Third Place – Introduced a digital tourism platform blending virtual reality (VR), AI, and Web3 technology to allow global audiences to explore South Africa’s rural communities virtually, participate in live workshops, and purchase authentic crafts, while preparing them for in-person visits.

Prizes awarded for the top three teams included R175 000 for first place, R140 000 for second place, and R105 000 for third place, with additional recognition and rewards for other high-ranking teams. Beyond the monetary prizes, participants gained exposure, mentorship, and opportunities to accelerate their projects into real-world solutions that can be scaled globally.

The G20 Tourism Hackathon demonstrated how technology, creativity, and youth-led innovation can converge to shape the future of tourism. By fostering AI-driven solutions, promoting rural inclusion, and highlighting cultural heritage, the event underscored the potential of digital innovation to create sustainable, immersive, and transformative travel experiences. It also showcased the role of collaboration between government, academia, and industry in building a tourism sector that is inclusive, resilient, and globally competitive.

The success of the hackathon marks a significant milestone in the journey towards a tech-savvy and sustainable tourism industry in South Africa, setting a benchmark for future initiatives that integrate innovation, culture, and community-driven growth.
