Xinjiang, China – For many travelers in Western China, Wednesday morning was anything but ordinary. Picture this: you book a direct flight with no layovers from Yining to Shache. Or from Tacheng to Altay, but then, at the very last moment, you are informed your flight is canceled. It is more than an inconvenience—an entire travel day is wasted. Chengdu Airlines (United Eagle) employees canceled twenty flights at four of the major airports in the Xinjiang area. This led to canceled flights for dozens of travelers.
These flights and their cancellations affected major regional airports in Shache, Yining, Aksu, and many others. For a majority of the people, the flights served a personal, essential purpose. In the staff lounge, one passenger going home to Altay for an long awaited family reunion reunion was in uppermost in the fliers’ mind while still going to employees’ staff lounge. Another traveler was going to Yining to attend a business meeting and, the fliers and staff in the lounge all knew this long awaited meeting would have to be canceled.
Here’s the list of the cancelled flights, affecting dozens of passengers across Xinjiang:# Flight Ident Aircraft Type Origin Destination Scheduled Departure Time 1 UEA3033 909 Yining (YIN / ZWYN) Shache Airport (QSZ / ZWSC) Wed 08:10 AM CST 2 UEA3032 909 Yining (YIN / ZWYN) Jiangbulake Airport (JBK / ZWQT) Wed 08:30 AM CST 3 UEA1869 A320 Shenyang Taoxian Int’l (SHE / ZYTX) Yancheng (YNZ / ZSYN) Wed 09:00 AM CST 4 UEA3009 909 Turpan Jiaohe (TLQ / ZWTL) Tumxuk Tangwangcheng Airport (TWC / ZWTS) Wed 09:20 AM CST 5 UEA3033 909 Shache Airport (QSZ / ZWSC) Bole Alashankou (BPL / ZWBL) Wed 10:15 AM CST 6 UEA3032 909 Jiangbulake Airport (JBK / ZWQT) Aksu (AKU / ZWAK) Wed 10:20 AM CST 7 UEA2971 909 Tacheng (TCG / ZWTC) Hotan (HTN / ZWTN) Wed 11:20 AM CST 8 UEA1869 A320 Yancheng (YNZ / ZSYN) Haikou Meilan Int’l (HAK / ZJHK) Wed 11:40 AM CST 9 UEA3010 909 Tumxuk Tangwangcheng Airport (TWC / ZWTS) Turpan Jiaohe (TLQ / ZWTL) Wed 11:50 AM CST 10 UEA3025 909 Tacheng (TCG / ZWTC) Altay (AAT / ZWAT) Wed 12:30 PM CST 11 UEA3034 909 Bole Alashankou (BPL / ZWBL) Shache Airport (QSZ / ZWSC) Wed 12:40 PM CST 12 UEA3029 909 Kuqa (KCA / ZWKC) Yining (YIN / ZWYN) Wed 01:50 PM CST 13 UEA2941 909 Yining (YIN / ZWYN) Aksu (AKU / ZWAK) Wed 02:00 PM CST 14 UEA3026 909 Altay (AAT / ZWAT) Tacheng (TCG / ZWTC) Wed 02:10 PM CST 15 UEA2995 909 Bole Alashankou (BPL / ZWBL) Altay (AAT / ZWAT) Wed 02:25 PM CST 16 UEA2972 909 Hotan (HTN / ZWTN) Tacheng (TCG / ZWTC) Wed 02:30 PM CST 17 UEA3034 909 Shache Airport (QSZ / ZWSC) Yining (YIN / ZWYN) Wed 03:15 PM CST 18 UEA3075 909 Fuyun Koktokay (FYN / ZWFY) Yining (YIN / ZWYN) Wed 03:15 PM CST 19 UEA3030 909 Yining (YIN / ZWYN) Kuqa (KCA / ZWKC) Wed 03:45 PM CST 20 UEA2941 909 Aksu (AKU / ZWAK) Hotan (HTN / ZWTN) Wed 03:55 PM CST
For the passengers, it wasn’t just about missing a flight; it was about the entire disruption of their plans. Whether they were heading to see family, attending business meetings, or embarking on long‑awaited vacations, these cancellations threw their lives into chaos. One traveller, attempting to travel from Shache to Yining, expressed that the issue wasn’t just about the flight, but the time lost in the process. They mentioned the missed connections, the hotels they had booked, and the family they were supposed to see, all now uncertain and up in the air.

Passengers were informed that they would be entitled to rebooking or a refund as per the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) regulations. However, the immediate response from Chengdu Airlines left many passengers frustrated with long wait times for customer service, and unclear answers. The CAAC’s regulations require airlines to provide clear communication and compensation when cancellations occur within the airline’s control, including covering additional travel expenses.
Many of those affected by these cancellations were travelling within Xinjiang, a region where air links are essential for both economic and social reasons. Remote areas like Hotan and Altay, which were also impacted by the cancellations, rely on air travel to connect them with the rest of China. The lack of reliable transport options only exacerbates the isolation these regions face, and each disruption further erodes trust in the domestic air network.

Despite the CAAC’s regulations requiring airlines to accommodate passengers during such disruptions, there are still gaps in how these measures are implemented on the ground. Passengers reported hours of uncertainty, not knowing if they would be rebooked on the next available flight or if they would need to make alternative travel arrangements altogether.
The frustration that came with these cancellations was not just the result of the travel inconvenience, but also the emotional toll it took on passengers who had been looking forward to a long‑awaited journey. Many expressed disappointment at the lack of communication regarding the cancellations, with no immediate explanations or solutions offered at the time. For those waiting for rebooking, the experience felt like their lives were being put on hold.

As the day continued, Chengdu Airlines began offering alternative flights and assisting passengers with their claims, but the damage was done. For many, the issue wasn’t just about getting to their destination—it was about the time lost, the disruption to their lives, and the uncertainty that made the travel experience a lot more stressful than anticipated.
In the end, the key takeaway is that behind every flight number, behind every cancellation, there is a person whose plans are disrupted. It’s easy to forget that when looking at a list of cancelled flights, but for the hundreds of passengers affected, it’s a reminder that air travel is not just about logistics—it’s about people, and how well they are treated during times of uncertainty. As the airline and the regulatory authorities work to improve the situation, it will be the passengers who will have the final say on whether this experience leaves a lasting impact on their future travel plans.
