Germany Unleashes a Powerful European Travel Shake-Up as Lufthansa Group Reshapes Edelweiss, Eurowings and City Airlines Leadership for a Bold Aviation Future

A big change has happened in the Lufthansa Group leadership with new people being chosen to run Edelweiss, Eurowings and Lufthansa City Airlines. The new people will start their jobs between 1 October and 1 November 2026. They are bringing in people who know a lot about flying to positions that affect fun trips how airlines work, how to take care of the workers and how to connect places. Edi Wolfensberger will be the boss of Edelweiss. Matthias Spohr will be the second-in-command at Eurowings. Michael Kircher will be, in charge of Lufthansa City Airlines. These new people will help keep the knowledge and skills from parts of the Lufthansa Group and use them in businesses that are focused on travelers.

Three Leadership Appointments Will Reshape Group Airlines

Three senior positions within Lufthansa Group companies will be filled through the announced restructuring. On 1 October 2026, Edi Wolfensberger will take responsibility as CEO of the Swiss leisure airline Edelweiss. On the same date, Matthias Spohr will be appointed Chief Operating Officer of Eurowings, succeeding Wolfensberger in that position.

A further appointment will become effective on 1 November 2026. Michael Kircher will be made CEO and Accountable Manager of Lufthansa City Airlines. He will also be appointed Co-Managing Director of Lufthansa Aviation GmbH. Through these changes, executives with operational, training and cockpit experience will be placed at the centre of airlines serving important European and leisure travel markets.

Edi Wolfensberger Will Take Control of Edelweiss

Edi Wolfensberger will be appointed CEO of Edelweiss on 1 October 2026. Bernd Bauer, who has led the airline since 2014, will be succeeded by him. Bauer will leave Lufthansa Group on the same date.

Extensive knowledge of Lufthansa Group operations will be brought to Edelweiss by Wolfensberger. Until now, the position of Chief Operating Officer at Eurowings has been held by him. His aviation career was started at Swiss International Air Lines in 2008, after which several leadership responsibilities were assigned to him across different Group businesses.

Among his earlier positions, the role of Managing Director of Lufthansa Aviation Training Switzerland was held by him. Chief Operating Officer and Accountable Manager duties were also performed by him at Brussels Airlines. A combination of airline operations, aviation training and regulatory responsibility will therefore be carried into his new position.

Leisure Travel Experience Will Be Preserved at Edelweiss

Edelweiss has been positioned as a Swiss leisure airline, connecting travellers with holiday destinations through a specialised tourism-oriented network. Under Wolfensberger, operational experience gained at Eurowings and Brussels Airlines is expected to be applied to a carrier whose performance is closely linked with seasonal demand, destination popularity and passenger confidence.

Continuity will be particularly important because Edelweiss has been developed under Bernd Bauer for more than a decade. A complete departure from its established direction has not been indicated. Instead, leadership responsibility will be transferred to an executive already familiar with the Group’s airline structure.

For passengers and tourism partners, the change should primarily be viewed as an internal transition. No route closures, timetable reductions or immediate changes to bookings have been included in the management announcement.

Bernd Bauer Will Leave After a Long Aviation Career

Bernd Bauer will leave Lufthansa Group on 1 October 2026. His aviation career was started at Crossair in 1994. From 2002, several senior positions were held by him at SWISS before he was appointed CEO of Edelweiss in 2014.

Between 2022 and 2025, the leadership of Discover Airlines was also assigned to him. During that period, the young leisure carrier was positioned in the German private travel and tourism market. His responsibilities across Edelweiss and Discover Airlines placed him at the heart of Lufthansa Group’s leisure aviation operations.

Under his leadership, Edelweiss was developed into an important leisure airline within the wider Group. His departure represents the end of a lengthy period during which considerable attention was given to holiday traffic and the development of specialised leisure products.

Matthias Spohr Will Become Eurowings COO

Matthias Spohr will succeed Edi Wolfensberger as Chief Operating Officer of Eurowings on 1 October 2026. Lufthansa Aviation Training has been led by him since 2021, while several Lufthansa Group management roles have been held by him since 2013.

Earlier in his career, responsibility for fleet management at Germanwings was assigned to him. Flight operations at Eurowings were subsequently managed by him, giving him direct knowledge of the airline that he will now rejoin in a senior operational capacity.

An instructor licence for the Airbus A320 family is held by Spohr. Alongside his management duties, flights are currently operated by him as a captain for Lufthansa Airlines. His background therefore combines executive leadership, pilot training, aircraft operations and frontline cockpit experience.

Eurowings Operations Will Receive an Experienced Hand

The Chief Operating Officer of an airline is closely involved with the systems that determine whether scheduled journeys can be delivered safely and efficiently. Flight operations, technical reliability, crew deployment and operational coordination are all influenced by decisions made at this level.

For Eurowings passengers, the appointment could carry particular importance during periods of heavy seasonal demand. Holiday traffic across Europe is frequently affected by crowded airports, air traffic restrictions, weather disruption and pressure on aircraft and crew availability. An executive with fleet, training and active flying experience will therefore be placed in a position where practical operational knowledge can be applied.

A successor to Matthias Spohr at Lufthansa Aviation Training has not yet been appointed. A decision is expected to be made separately.

Michael Kircher Will Lead Lufthansa City Airlines

Michael Kircher will be appointed CEO and Accountable Manager of Lufthansa City Airlines on 1 November 2026. The additional position of Co-Managing Director of Lufthansa Aviation GmbH will also be assumed by him.

Kircher will join Lufthansa City Airlines from Austrian Airlines. At the Austrian carrier, the positions of Nominated Person Crew Training and Head of Training are currently held by him. He also serves as an Airbus A320 family captain.

The role of Accountable Manager at Austrian Airlines was temporarily held by Kircher on an interim basis. This experience will be relevant because an Accountable Manager carries formal responsibility for ensuring that an airline’s operations are conducted in accordance with applicable regulatory and safety requirements.

Peter Albers Will Return His Focus to Flying

Peter Albers will be succeeded by Michael Kircher. The transition has been planned for some time, according to Lufthansa Group. Albers will focus entirely on his position as a Lufthansa Airlines captain after leaving his Lufthansa City Airlines management responsibilities.

Lufthansa City Airlines has been led by Albers since October 2024. The position of Co-Managing Director of Lufthansa Aviation GmbH has also been held by him. Before these appointments, several other leadership roles were performed by him within Lufthansa Group, including the position of Accountable Manager for Lufthansa Cargo transport management.

Through Kircher’s appointment, executive responsibility will again be assigned to a leader with direct cockpit, crew-training and regulatory experience.

What the Reshuffle Means for Travellers

No immediate passenger action has been required by the management changes. Existing bookings, flight schedules and travel arrangements have not been altered by the announcement. However, the appointments remain relevant to passengers because senior airline leadership can shape operational reliability, long-term network development and service delivery.

At Edelweiss, leadership will be transferred to an executive with experience in leisure aviation and multi-airline operations. At Eurowings, operational control will be assigned to a captain and training specialist who has already managed parts of the carrier’s flight operation. At Lufthansa City Airlines, leadership will be placed in the hands of an executive experienced in crew training and regulatory accountability.

The appointments therefore connect corporate management with the practical delivery of passenger journeys. Rather than being confined to boardroom administration, responsibilities affecting aircraft, crews, safety systems and operational planning will be overseen by professionals with substantial aviation experience.

Travel Industry Partners Will Watch the Transition

Tour operators, airports, tourism boards and travel agencies rely upon stable airline capacity and dependable flight operations. Edelweiss and Eurowings have particularly visible roles in European leisure travel, while Lufthansa City Airlines supports Lufthansa Group connectivity and feeds passengers into the wider network.

A leadership transition can influence future capacity decisions, seasonal planning and relationships with destinations. Nevertheless, no specific network strategy or route expansion has been announced as part of these appointments. Claims of immediate new services or passenger benefits would therefore be premature.

What has been confirmed is a carefully timed transfer of responsibility. The Eurowings and Edelweiss appointments will become effective together on 1 October, allowing Wolfensberger’s former position to be filled as he moves to Switzerland. One month later, Kircher’s leadership of Lufthansa City Airlines will begin.

Internal Expertise Will Be Moved Across the Group

The new team at Lufthansa Group is made up of people who have a lot of experience working for the company. Wolfensberger, Spohr and Kircher have all worked for parts of Lufthansa Group like SWISS, Brussels Airlines, Eurowings, Germanwings, Lufthansa Aviation Training, Lufthansa Airlines and Austrian Airlines.
