Washington DC Targets Sports Tourism Growth After Welcoming Record 27.2 Million Visitors in 2025
Washington DC targets sports tourism growth after welcoming a record 27.2 million visitors in 2025, as the American capital strengthens its position as a leading destination for international sporting events, conventions and cultural experiences. New stadium developments, major championships and destination marketing initiatives are expected to support tourism growth.
Washington DC Strengthens Sports Tourism Strategy to Drive Visitor Spending
Washington DC is placing sports tourism at the centre of its long-term visitor economy strategy, following a record year for tourism spending and arrivals. Destination DC (DDC), the city’s official destination marketing organisation, has outlined plans to attract international visitors, strengthen hotel demand and generate economic opportunities through major sporting events.

According to Destination DC, the American capital welcomed 27.2 million visitors in 2025, generating a record $11.9 billion in visitor spending and $2.4 billion in tax revenue. Tourism activity supported 114,013 jobs, highlighting the industry’s importance to the local economy.
However, annual visitor growth slowed considerably, with just 20,000 additional visitors compared with the previous year. International arrivals also declined by 4%, creating fresh challenges for the destination’s tourism recovery and competitiveness.

NFL Draft 2027 and Major Championships to Attract International Visitors
Washington DC is preparing to host several major sporting events that could strengthen its position as a global sports tourism destination.
The 2027 NFL Draft, scheduled for 29 April to 1 May, represents one of the city’s most significant upcoming opportunities. The National Football League expects approximately one million attendees across the three-day event.

Other major attractions include the National Women’s Soccer League Championship at Audi Field on 21 November 2026 and the arrival of DC Flight, a new Major League Volleyball team, in January 2027.
Capital One Arena will also host the Men’s Frozen Four in April 2027, while its wider transformation is expected to improve facilities for visitors and spectators.
Looking further ahead, the Washington Commanders are scheduled to return to the historic RFK campus in 2030, with a new indoor stadium forming part of a broader mixed-use development.
These projects could support demand for accommodation, restaurants, transport and entertainment.
Tourism Marketing Investment Remains Critical to Growth
Destination DC is also focusing on stronger destination marketing to maintain its competitive position.
The organisation reported that its marketing budget declined by approximately two-thirds in fiscal year 2026 after its allocation from hotel tax revenue fell from 1.97% to 0.97%.

Research conducted by the DC Office of the Chief Financial Officer and Future Partners found that every dollar invested in Destination DC’s 2025 spring and summer domestic marketing campaign generated $24 in visitor spending and $2.12 in tax revenue.
The findings demonstrate the potential economic value of sustained tourism promotion.
Destination DC’s There’s Only One DC campaign and its We the People DC initiative also highlight neighbourhood culture, local businesses and authentic visitor experiences.
Business Events and Hotel Development Support Tourism Expansion
Beyond sporting events, Washington DC continues to strengthen its meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions sector.
Citywide conventions in 2026 generated an estimated economic impact of $317 million and approximately 390,000 hotel room nights.
For 2027, Destination DC forecasts approximately $371 million in economic impact and 459,000 hotel room nights from booked citywide conventions.

The destination’s expanding hospitality infrastructure is expected to support this demand.
Recent hotel developments include CitizenM Georgetown, Tempo by Hilton Downtown and Hoya Hotel at Georgetown.
The Watergate Hotel and Westin City Center are also undergoing renovations, while new hospitality brands are entering the market.
Dulles International Airport’s planned 14-gate concourse is another significant infrastructure improvement intended to strengthen the region’s aviation capacity.
Cultural Attractions Strengthen Washington DC’s Visitor Appeal
Washington DC’s tourism strategy extends beyond stadiums and convention centres.
Major cultural developments include the reopening of the Hirshhorn Sculpture Garden, the completion of the National Air and Space Museum’s extensive renovation and the introduction of the National Geographic Museum of Exploration.

The city’s historical attractions, museums and cultural festivals provide additional reasons for visitors to extend their stays.
Important anniversaries in 2027, including the centenary of the National Cherry Blossom Festival, are also expected to strengthen the destination’s international appeal.
Together, sporting events, business tourism and cultural experiences provide opportunities to attract different visitor segments throughout the year.
Washington DC’s expanding sports tourism calendar, convention business and hospitality investments provide a foundation for continued visitor economy growth. Although international arrivals face challenges, major sporting events and destination marketing could strengthen travel demand, support employment and encourage visitors to explore the American capital beyond its traditional attractions.
