Anand nair reveals how intercontinental chennai mahabalipuram resort blends heritage, luxury, wellness, weddings and mice to drive global growth.

TTW had the opportunity to interview Mr. Anand Nair, who is the General Manager of InterContinental Chennai Mahabalipuram Resort, bringing over three decades of experience in luxury hospitality. A seasoned leader known for his strategic vision, operational excellence, and people-first approach, Anand has held leadership roles across renowned hospitality brands including The Leela, Taj Hotels, Sarovar Hotels, and IHG Hotels & Resorts. He has successfully led award-winning hotel launches, driven large-scale transformation projects, and strengthened the market positioning of luxury properties. Under his leadership, InterContinental Chennai Mahabalipuram Resort has been revitalised as a premier luxury destination, reflecting his commitment to innovation, exceptional guest experiences, and sustained business growth.

How does the resort’s reimagined identity seamlessly blend Mahabalipuram’s UNESCO-inspired architecture with modern luxury for travelers on East Coast Road?

One of the most special aspects of our resort is its location, surrounded by the rich history and artistry of Mahabalipuram. As we reimagined the resort, it was important that we celebrated this heritage rather than overshadowed it.

The design continues to draw inspiration from the Pallava dynasty’s architectural legacy, with subtle elements reflected throughout the property. At the same time, we’ve introduced contemporary interiors, upgraded guestrooms, enhanced dining experiences and modern amenities that meet the expectations of today’s luxury traveller.

For our guests, it’s not simply about staying at a luxury resort—it’s about experiencing a destination that has a genuine sense of place. I believe that balance between cultural authenticity and contemporary comfort is what truly sets us apart along the East Coast Road.

With over 1 lakh sq. ft. of event space, how are you positioning the property as South India’s top choice for large-scale weddings and corporate retreats?

We are fortunate to have one of the most versatile event destinations in the region, offering over one lakh square feet of indoor and outdoor venues overlooking the Bay of Bengal. This gives us the flexibility to host everything from intimate celebrations to grand weddings and large-scale corporate events.

However, space alone doesn’t define a successful event. What truly differentiates us is our ability to curate memorable experiences backed by personalised planning, exceptional culinary offerings and the warmth of our service culture.

Our focus is on becoming a destination where guests don’t simply attend an event—they enjoy an immersive resort experience. Whether it’s a multi-day wedding celebration or a leadership retreat, we want every guest to leave with lasting memories.

How do venues like Tao of Peng and KoKoMMo Tiki Shack, alongside beachside wellness activities, enhance the overall guest stay?

Today’s luxury traveller looks for variety and meaningful experiences within a single destination, and that is exactly what we strive to offer.

Tao of Peng brings together refined Asian flavours in an elegant setting, while KoKoMMo Tiki Shack offers a completely different experience with its relaxed beachfront ambience, fresh coastal cuisine and spectacular sunset views. Together, they create dining experiences that appeal to different moods throughout a guest’s stay.

Beyond dining, wellness has become an integral part of travel. From rejuvenating spa therapies and yoga sessions to walks by the beach and mindful outdoor experiences, we encourage guests to slow down and reconnect—with themselves, with nature and with the destination. These experiences transform a holiday into something far more memorable.

What major shifts are you noticing in what high-net-worth guests and corporate travel buyers expect from luxury beachfront destinations today?

The definition of luxury has evolved considerably. Guests today are looking beyond beautiful rooms and premium facilities—they want experiences that feel personal, authentic and effortless.

High-net-worth travellers increasingly value privacy, exclusivity, wellness and curated local experiences. They appreciate thoughtful service that anticipates their needs without being intrusive.

Corporate travel buyers have also become far more experience-driven. They are looking for destinations that combine productive meeting spaces with opportunities for team engagement, wellness and leisure. Resorts that can successfully blend business with relaxation are seeing much stronger demand.

Ultimately, luxury today is about creating memorable moments rather than simply offering premium products.

Following this transformation, what are your key operational priorities to expand the resort’s regional and international market reach?

Our immediate priority is to ensure that every guest experiences the transformation not just through our physical spaces, but through our service and hospitality.

We are strengthening our focus across key leisure, weddings, MICE and international travel segments while working closely with our global sales network and travel partners to position the resort in important source markets.

At the same time, we continue investing in our people because exceptional hospitality begins with an engaged and empowered team. We are also enhancing our digital presence, introducing distinctive experiences and building partnerships that showcase Mahabalipuram as a world-class luxury destination.

My vision is for InterContinental Chennai Mahabalipuram Resort to be recognised not only as one of India’s finest beachfront resorts, but also as a destination that beautifully combines culture, luxury and genuine hospitality.

These responses are well suited for interviews with luxury travel, hospitality, and business publications, offering a personal leadership perspective while subtly reinforcing the resort’s positioning and key strengths.
