Thailand tourism 2026 picks up new steam due to a surge in tourist interest from China, Malaysia, India, Russia and South Korea driving foreign tourists numbers. Travel holidays and particularly China’s Golden Week became a catalyst for tourism growth. Until the beginning of October, Thailand hosted 23.45 million foreign tourists, and there was a growth of 8.24% in weekly arrivals.

Thailand has received a fresh tourism boost as travellers from China, Malaysia, India, Russia and South Korea continue to dominate foreign arrivals. The latest figures released on 5 October 2026 show that 522,532 international tourists entered Thailand between 27 September and 3 October. That was an 8.24% increase from the previous week. China delivered the biggest surge as Golden Week encouraged more overseas holidays. However, the wider picture remains mixed.

Thailand Tourism Gets Powerful Holiday Boost

Thailand received 522,532 foreign visitors during the seven days from 27 September to 3 October 2026. This was 39,781 more tourists than during the previous week.

The country therefore welcomed an average of 74,647 foreign visitors every day.

Several Asian holidays helped create this sudden lift. China’s National Day and Golden Week encouraged Chinese travellers to leave the country. Holidays in Hong Kong and South Korea also supported regional travel.

Long-haul demand strengthened at the same time.

This helped Thailand record one of its most important weekly tourism improvements heading into the final quarter of 2026.

The figures illustrate why Thailand cannot judge its tourism recovery from one week alone. While short-term growth looks strong, generating 74,647 average daily arrivals during the latest reporting week, the country remains slightly behind last year’s total visitor level and total revenue benchmarks.

The figures show why Thailand cannot judge its tourism recovery from one week alone. Short-term growth looks strong. Yet the country remains slightly behind last year’s total visitor level.

China Leads Thailand Tourism With Nearly Four Million Visitors

China remains the clear leader in Thailand’s international tourism market.

Thailand received 3,999,854 Chinese visitors between 1 January and 3 October 2026.

The latest week produced an even stronger signal.

Around 133,946 Chinese tourists entered Thailand between 27 September and 3 October. That was a remarkable 41.98% increase compared with the previous week.

Golden Week played a major role.

Chinese tourists often use this long holiday for overseas journeys. Thailand remains attractive because it combines beaches, food, shopping, culture, wellness and city breaks.

China’s importance also goes beyond visitor volume.

TAT has been targeting different Chinese regions with campaigns built around wellness, sport, family travel, culture and emerging Thai destinations. Earlier in August, TAT said Chinese arrivals had already exceeded 3.14 million.

Malaysia Remains Thailand’s Mighty Short-Haul Tourism Engine

Malaysia ranks second among Thailand’s largest foreign tourism markets.

Thailand welcomed 2,982,095 Malaysian visitors by 3 October 2026.

During the latest week, Malaysia contributed another 59,871 arrivals. This was 0.64% lower than the previous week, but Malaysia’s overall importance remains enormous.

Distance is one major advantage.

Malaysian travellers can reach southern Thailand quickly by land, air and sea. This creates frequent weekend trips, shopping holidays and short leisure breaks.

TAT describes Malaysia as one of Thailand’s most important short-haul markets. In July, Thailand and AirAsia Group also launched a three-year partnership aimed at developing routes, marketing campaigns and higher-value visitor segments.

By 7 July, Malaysia had already contributed more than 2.13 million tourists.

India Emerges as One of Thailand’s Strongest Growth Stories

India has become one of the biggest forces reshaping Thailand tourism.

Thailand received 1,751,485 Indian tourists from 1 January to 3 October, putting India firmly in third place.

Momentum remains strong.

During the latest week, 46,942 Indian visitors entered Thailand. That represented a 16.53% week-on-week increase.

TAT has set a target of more than 2.55 million Indian visitors during 2026, with expected tourism revenue of around 97.86 billion baht.

Better air connectivity is helping.

In 2025, ten airlines operated direct India-Thailand flights, providing more than 3.8 million seats. Bangkok, Phuket and Krabi remain key gateways.

Indian travel patterns are also commercially attractive.

TAT-backed booking data found that families and larger groups represented more than 43% of Indian travellers using the AirAsia MOVE platform. Many stayed for seven to 15 days. Indian travellers also produced the platform’s highest revenue per booking.

Russia Gives Thailand a Powerful Long-Haul Advantage

Russia is Thailand’s fourth-largest international source market in the latest figures.

The country welcomed 1,281,214 Russian visitors between 1 January and 3 October.

Another 22,326 Russian travellers arrived during the latest reporting week. That was 14.23% higher than the previous week.

Russia plays a different role from nearby Asian markets.

Russian travellers often come for longer beach holidays. Destinations such as Phuket, Pattaya, Bangkok, Krabi and Koh Samui benefit strongly from this demand.

Thailand’s warm climate also becomes more attractive to Russian travellers as colder months approach.

This means Russia could become increasingly important as Thailand enters its traditional winter high season.

South Korea Keeps Thailand’s Asian Travel Momentum Strong

South Korea completes Thailand’s current top five international tourism markets.

Thailand received 860,655 South Korean visitors during the year to 3 October.

Another 21,219 visitors arrived during 27 September–3 October, representing weekly growth of 3.66%.

South Korea’s National Foundation Day holiday helped travel demand.

This market is valuable because travellers can reach Thailand on relatively short flights and often choose Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai and beach destinations for quick holidays.

East Asian travellers also show strong potential for premium short breaks.

TAT booking research found that visitors from China, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan often take shorter trips, opening opportunities for festivals, city breaks and special events.

United States and Britain Strengthen Thailand’s High-Value Tourism Push

Thailand’s tourism story is not only about the top five countries.

The United States and United Kingdom are becoming increasingly important because of spending and longer stays.

TAT has set a target of 1.5 million US visitors as part of its “Value over Volume” strategy. The authority wants to attract higher-spending travellers through wellness, entertainment, culture and stronger airline partnerships.

Britain is another major long-haul market.

Thailand welcomed more than one million UK travellers in 2025. These visitors generated more than 74.5 billion baht.

British travellers stayed an average 14.18 nights, while average spending reached around 60,000 to 70,000 baht per person. Bangkok, Phuket, Krabi, Surat Thani and Chiang Mai remain popular.

These long-haul visitors help Thailand reduce its dependence on sheer arrival volume.

Thailand Wants Value as Well as Visitor Numbers

The headline numbers may look impressive, but Thailand is changing how it measures tourism success.

TAT is now pushing a “Value over Volume” strategy.

Instead of simply attracting as many travellers as possible, Thailand wants visitors who stay longer, spend more and travel beyond the busiest destinations.

Wellness, nature, food, local culture and sustainable experiences form part of this plan.

TAT projected 30 million to 34 million international visitors for 2026 when it recalibrated its outlook in April. It also highlighted global uncertainty, air connectivity limits and changing traveller behaviour as important risks.

The strategy matters because international arrivals remain below last year’s level despite the latest weekly rise.

Thailand’s 23.45 Million Arrivals Reveal a Two-Speed Recovery

The latest numbers tell two stories at once.

The first story looks highly positive.

Foreign arrivals climbed 8.24% in one week. China jumped nearly 42%. India grew more than 16%. Russia rose more than 14%.

But the second story is more cautious.

Thailand’s 23,452,895 arrivals through 3 October remained 3.88% below the same period of 2025. International tourism revenue reached 1.142 trillion baht, also below last year’s comparable level.

This means Thailand’s tourism recovery is gaining strength, but it has not yet turned into broad year-on-year growth.

The next few months will be critical.

Holiday Rush May Cool but Thailand’s High Season Is Coming

Thailand expects foreign arrivals to ease immediately after the latest holiday rush.

Travel from China, South Korea, Hong Kong and Malaysia could return towards normal levels once extended holidays finish.

That does not mean tourism demand is disappearing.

Thailand is approaching the important year-end travel season. Cooler weather attracts tourists from Europe and Russia. Regional visitors continue to arrive for short holidays. India remains a rapidly expanding market.

Flooding in Bangkok has also attracted attention. However, authorities said the situation had not directly damaged tourism demand. Some airline cancellations caused minor disruption, but most tourism activity continued.

China, Malaysia and India Could Define Thailand’s Next Tourism Chapter

Thailand’s latest numbers reveal where the country’s international tourism power now sits.

China remains the giant.

Malaysia provides dependable regional traffic.

India is rapidly becoming a major growth engine.

Russia brings valuable long-haul demand.

South Korea adds another strong Asian source market.

Meanwhile, Britain and the United States strengthen Thailand’s higher-spending tourism base.

This mix could prove crucial.

Thailand does not simply need more visitors. It needs stronger spending, longer stays and demand spread across more destinations.

The week ending 3 October provided an encouraging signal. Yet the year-to-date decline shows that challenges remain.

Thailand’s latest tourism numbers show a market that is moving forward, even if the recovery is not yet complete. China remains the biggest force, while Malaysia, India, Russia and South Korea continue to bring steady demand. The recent holiday rush has given Thailand fresh momentum, and the coming high season could strengthen that trend further. Much will now depend on whether visitor numbers keep rising after the holiday peak and whether travellers stay longer, spend more and explore beyond the country’s most popular destinations.
