Thai citizens are traveling outside the country more than ever before. International travel has increased and last year Thai citizens made 13.06 million travel attractions outside the country. The total amount Thai citizens spent traveling for the year was over 559 billion Thai baht. That is a 11.4 % increase from the year before.

The growth highlights changing travel preferences among Thai tourists, with factors such as visa accessibility, transport connections, affordability and overall travel convenience shaping destination choices. China has emerged as the leading international destination for Thai travellers, attracting significantly more visitors than other major markets.

China Becomes Top Choice For Thai Travellers With Strong Connectivity And Easy Entry

China recorded the highest number of Thai visitors, welcoming 3.06 million arrivals over the past year. Thai travellers spent a combined 120.253 billion baht during their trips, averaging around 39,317 baht per visit.

The destination’s popularity has been supported by easier travel procedures, including a permanent visa-free arrangement for Thai citizens. Reduced administrative requirements have made travel planning simpler while encouraging more visitors to explore Chinese cities and attractions.

Beyond entry convenience, China’s extensive transport network, modern infrastructure and competitive travel costs have strengthened its position among Thai tourists. Efficient domestic connections, diverse cultural attractions and a wide range of accommodation options have also contributed to its growing appeal.

Malaysia Strengthens Position Through Proximity And Regional Access

Malaysia ranked as the second most visited destination among Thai travellers, attracting 1.72 million visitors who spent 33.381 billion baht.

The country’s geographical proximity to Thailand remains a major advantage, allowing travellers to access Malaysia easily through multiple transport options, including road, rail and air connections.

Border accessibility and shorter travel times have made Malaysia an attractive option for Thai tourists seeking convenient international experiences. The destination continues to benefit from strong regional links, particularly among travellers looking for affordable holidays, shopping experiences, food tourism and short international breaks.

Laos Gains Momentum As Rail Connectivity Transforms Travel

Laos secured the third position, welcoming 1.44 million Thai visitors who contributed 22.057 billion baht in tourism spending.

Improved transport links have played a major role in boosting travel between Thailand and Laos. The Laos-China railway, which began operations in 2021, has transformed regional mobility by reducing travel times between key locations, including Vientiane, Luang Prabang and areas connected towards southern China.

The railway has created new opportunities for overland tourism by making cross-border journeys faster and more convenient. As regional infrastructure continues to develop, Laos is becoming increasingly accessible for Thai travellers seeking cultural experiences and nature-based tourism.

Japan Attracts Fewer Visitors Than Some Markets But Generates Higher Spending

Japan ranked fourth in terms of Thai visitor numbers, receiving 1.23 million travellers. However, the country recorded significantly higher spending levels compared with many other destinations.

Thai visitors spent 63.269 billion baht in Japan, with average spending reaching 51,558 baht per trip.

The figures reflect Japan’s strong appeal among Thai tourists through its combination of food, culture, safety, seasonal attractions and highly developed transport systems. Many travellers are willing to spend more for experiences associated with quality, convenience and comfort.

From traditional heritage sites to modern cities, Japan continues to attract visitors seeking deeper cultural experiences and premium travel opportunities.

United Kingdom Records Fastest Growth Among Leading Destinations

The United Kingdom ranked fifth among the most popular destinations for Thai travellers but recorded the strongest growth rate among the top five markets.

Thai arrivals to the UK increased 39.7% to 492,000 visitors. Travellers spent an average of 131,089 baht per trip, while the average stay reached 13.6 days.

The longer stays and higher spending levels were linked to a mix of travel purposes, including holidays, education-related journeys and visits to family members.

The UK’s historical attractions, educational institutions, cultural experiences and international connections continue to support demand among Thai visitors.

South Korea Faces Decline As Border Concerns Influence Traveller Decisions

While several destinations experienced growth, South Korea saw a decline in Thai visitor numbers. The country dropped to 13th place, with arrivals falling 13.8% to 328,000.

The decline has been linked to concerns surrounding stricter immigration screening procedures following cases involving illegal employment by some Thai nationals.

Reports of some travellers being denied entry have created uncertainty among potential visitors. This perception of increased travel risk has influenced decisions for some tourists, particularly those considering destinations where entry processes appear more predictable.

The situation highlights the growing importance of border experience and traveller confidence in shaping international tourism demand.

Ease Of Travel Becomes A Key Factor In Thai Outbound Tourism Growth

The latest figures reveal a major trend in Thai outbound tourism, where convenience has become a crucial factor in destination selection.

Travellers are increasingly considering not only attractions and experiences but also visa rules, transport connections, border procedures and overall travel costs before choosing where to visit.

Destinations that provide smooth travel experiences from trip planning to arrival are gaining a competitive advantage in the global tourism market.

Thailand’s outbound travel surge has reached a historic high, with 13.06 million overseas trips recorded as Thai travellers increasingly choose China, Japan and global destinations due to easier travel access, strong connectivity and attractive experiences.

The ease and affordability of travel, along with improving immigration processes, plays an important role in traveler’s destination decision making. Thailand is currently benefitting from this new trend with record breaking numbers of Thai tourists. It appears that in the near future, Thailand, along with other countries with similarly easy access and ease of travel, will also benefit from greater numbers of tourists from Asia and beyond.
