A Honolulu luxury hotel is placing Hawaii royal heritage at the centre of a community event this October. OUTRIGGER Waikīkī Paradise Hotel will host a Princess Ka‘iulani celebration marking her 151st birthday with ceremony, music, art and rare personal artefacts. The event matters because visitors will be offered a Hawaii cultural experience rooted in history rather than a conventional hotel programme.

A traditional lei ceremony, live performances and a significant historical display have been brought together for one evening. The gathering will also connect residents, travellers and cultural organisations through a tribute to one of Hawai‘i’s most remembered royal figures.

A Long-Running Lei Tribute Will Anchor the Waikīkī Evening

The evening is scheduled to begin on Friday, 16 October, with a traditional lei draping ceremony at Ka‘iulani Triangle Park, at 150 Ka‘iulani Avenue. The ceremony has been organised annually by OUTRIGGER since 1999, when the statue of Princess Ka‘iulani was commissioned and placed at the corner of Ka‘iulani and Kūhiō avenues. Now entering its 27th year, the tradition has been shaped as a continuing act of remembrance.

Several organisations connected with Hawaii royal heritage are expected to take part. These include The Daughters and Sons of Hawaiian Warriors/Māmakakaua, ʻAhahui Ka‘iulani, the Royal Order of Kamehameha I and Hale O Nā Ali‘i O Hawai‘i. Their participation gives the Princess Ka‘iulani celebration a clear cultural foundation. Rather than being presented simply as hotel entertainment, the ceremony has been positioned as a community observance linked directly to ali‘i history and the preservation of royal legacy.

Live Music and Local Creativity Will Transform the Hotel Lobby

After the ceremony, guests will be invited across Ka‘iulani Avenue to the OUTRIGGER Waikīkī Paradise Hotel, where the lobby is set to be transformed into a “paradise garden” by florist Ocean Dreamerr. The setting will provide the backdrop for a programme combining music, spoken word and local creativity.

Performances are scheduled from Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award-winning artists Taimane and Ei Nei, alongside Irie Love. Spoken word will be presented by Kealoha, Hawai‘i’s first Poet Laureate. A curated marketplace by Art + Flea will also highlight members of Hawai‘i’s creative community. Beverages from Appetito and tastings from Tanaka of Tokyo will be offered for purchase.

Together, these elements are designed to broaden the Hawaii cultural experience beyond a formal commemorative ceremony. For visitors staying in Waikīkī, the hotel programme will place contemporary creative expression beside a tribute rooted in Hawaiian royal memory.

Rare Princess Ka‘iulani Belongings Will Take Centre Stage

A major historical display will also be presented before and after the performances. More than 75 items owned by Princess Ka‘iulani, or connected with her life, will be shared by Hawaiian Islands Stamp & Coin. The collection will include 25 original photographs, with some personally autographed by the Princess.

Her own address book and handwritten personal letters will also be shown. Among them is a letter written when she was 10 years old. Other objects scheduled for display include her belt, a favourite bracelet, a painting she created and her ukulele.

The exhibition gives the Princess Ka‘iulani celebration an unusually personal dimension. Instead of relying only on performance and ceremony, visitors will be able to encounter objects directly associated with the Princess. For a Honolulu luxury hotel hosting a public cultural programme, the inclusion of these belongings places documented history at the centre of the guest experience.

Free Public Access Will Connect Hospitality With Community Heritage

The gathering will run from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and will be free and open to the public. Food and beverages will be available for purchase. The format allows the OUTRIGGER Waikīkī Paradise Hotel to operate not only as accommodation, but also as the setting for a community-led evening of remembrance and cultural presentation.

General Manager Kiana Beimes has explained that Princess Ka‘iulani’s story has long felt personal because she grew up in Waikīkī near the location where the statue now stands. She has also described carrying the Princess’s spirit forward as a responsibility to both her legacy and the community.

The property is part of OUTRIGGER DISCOVERY and the GHA DISCOVERY loyalty programme. Members can receive recognition, rewards and experiences across more than 1,000 hotels, resorts and palaces in 100 countries. Eligible members can also earn and redeem DISCOVERY Dollars on qualifying stays, dining and experiences, with D$1 equal to USD 1. This places the event within the hotel’s broader hospitality and guest engagement setting in Waikīkī.

Princess Ka‘iulani’s Legacy Will Remain at the Heart of the Experience

The Princess Ka‘iulani celebration will bring ceremony, performance, art and historical objects together in Waikīkī on 16 October. By opening the programme to the public, OUTRIGGER Waikīkī Paradise Hotel will connect hospitality with Hawaii royal heritage in a direct and accessible way.

The Honolulu luxury hotel will also give visitors a Hawaii cultural experience shaped by community participation and rare personal belongings linked to the Princess. From the lei draping ceremony to live music and handwritten letters, the evening has been structured around remembrance. The event will therefore place Princess Ka‘iulani’s legacy at the heart of a Waikīkī hospitality setting.
