The airline’s intercontinental network from Porto includes seven long-haul markets, with services connecting the city to countries such as Brazil, the United States, Angola and Cape Verde.
The addition of Sal Island follows other recent network developments from Porto. Earlier in July, TAP introduced new connections between Porto and Terceira Island in the Azores, as well as Porto and Praia in Cape Verde.
These expansions reflect growing demand for direct international routes from northern Portugal and highlight Porto’s increasing importance in global travel networks.
The city has become an important alternative gateway for passengers seeking international connections outside traditional hubs. Through TAP’s network, travellers can access major destinations while benefiting from convenient connections within Portugal and beyond.

TAP Expands Long Haul Opportunities From Northern Portugal
The new Porto–Sal service complements TAP’s existing international routes from the city, including flights to major destinations such as New York, Boston, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Luanda and Praia.
The airline has also strengthened its transatlantic connectivity by making the Porto–Boston route available throughout the year rather than only during seasonal periods. This provides passengers with greater flexibility when planning travel between Portugal and the United States.
TAP’s wider network allows passengers from international markets to connect through Porto and Lisbon to destinations across the Americas, Africa and Portugal’s Atlantic regions.
Travellers from the United Kingdom and Ireland can also access TAP’s global network through flights from London Heathrow, London Gatwick, Manchester and Dublin. These connections provide access to destinations including Brazil, Cape Verde, Madeira, the Azores, Canada and the United States.
New Route Supports Tourism And Economic Links
The launch of the Porto–Sal connection is expected to create new opportunities for tourism and economic cooperation between Portugal and Cape Verde.
Cape Verde has become an increasingly popular Atlantic destination, known for its beaches, warm climate and growing tourism infrastructure. Sal Island, in particular, attracts international visitors seeking leisure experiences, coastal holidays and year-round sunshine.

The route will also support business links between the two regions by improving mobility for professionals, investors and communities with connections across the Atlantic.
Portugal Travel gains a major Atlantic boost as TAP Air Portugal launches new Porto to Sal Island direct flights, strengthening tourism and international connectivity between Portugal and Cape Verde.
TAP’s Stopover Programme Adds More Travel Opportunities
Alongside its expanding flight network, TAP continues to promote Portugal through its stopover programme. The initiative allows passengers travelling on long-haul journeys to spend up to 10 days in Lisbon or Porto without paying additional airfare.
The programme encourages international travellers to explore Portugal before continuing towards their final destinations. It also strengthens the role of Portuguese cities as gateways for global travel.
With the launch of the Porto–Sal route, TAP is further expanding its international presence while reinforcing Porto’s position as a strategic aviation hub.
