Online seminar and Q&A session for assisting farmers held in Maharashtra

The Directorate of Tourism of the Maharashtra government and Pune based Shekaru Foundation, recently held an online seminar and Q&A session for assisting farmers to set up successful agri-tourism operations.

The seminar was inaugurated by Dhananjay Sawalkar, director, Directorate of Tourism and dignitaries including Supriya Karmarkar-Datar, Deputy Director, Directorate of Tourism, Pune, Dhananjay Kalekar, Deputy Director, Directorate of Tourism Amravati, Vanatin Mundavare, Deputy Director, Directorate of Tourism, Nashik and Hanumant Hede, Deputy Director, Directorate of Tourism, Navi Mumbai, took part in this discussion sahring their valuable thoughts and insights on Agri-Tourism.

The discussion was moderated by Hemant Jagtap, Training Officer, Maharashtra Co-operative Development Corporation, Pune.

More than 70 farmers took part in this online discussion putting forth various questions on agri-tourism practice. The panelists provided guidance to farmers regarding agri-tourism.

Mr. Sawalkar highlighted the key initiatives undertaken by the State Govt. for improving agri-tourism in Maharashtra and among them, one of the key initiatives is the Agri-Tourism policy. He stressed that agri-tourism plays a pivotal role for sustainable development of rural areas allowing farmers to diversify their income, encourage agriculture-related businesses, and provide job opportunities for rural youth and women.

Agri-Tourism also provides an opportunity for tourists to get familiar with agricultural areas, agricultural practices, farm produce, and gain an insight about the daily life of farmers, along with cultural features and traditions. Sawalkar emphasized that the maximum number of farmers should opt for agri-tourism as a supplementary business. He also requested farmers to contact the Directorate of Tourism regional offices if they face any challenges.
