SAS has launched a year-round nonstop route between Copenhagen and Mumbai, restoring a direct air link between Scandinavia and India after 17 years. The five-weekly Airbus A330 service is designed to support corporate travel, tourism and onward connections across the Nordic region, Europe and North America.

SAS launches direct Copenhagen–Mumbai route

Scandinavian Airlines, widely known as SAS, has begun its new nonstop service between Copenhagen and Mumbai, creating a direct scheduled connection between India’s commercial capital and the Scandinavian hub.

The route began from Copenhagen on 1 October 2026, with the first return flight from Mumbai scheduled on 3 October. SAS operates the service five times a week, using an Airbus A330 configured with 266 seats. The carrier says the route will operate year-round, reconnecting the two markets after a 17-year absence from India. SAS

For Indian travellers, the service offers a direct route to Copenhagen and wider Scandinavia. For Nordic travellers, it creates a more straightforward way to reach Mumbai for trade, leisure, family visits and cultural travel.

The launch also gives Copenhagen Airport a stronger role as a gateway between India and Northern Europe. SAS passengers arriving from Mumbai can connect onwards through the airline’s network to cities across Scandinavia, Europe and selected long-haul destinations.

Five weekly flights and Airbus A330 operations

SAS is operating flight SK969 from Copenhagen to Mumbai and SK970 on the return journey. The Copenhagen departure is scheduled for 16:10, arriving in Mumbai at 04:30 the following morning. The Mumbai service is scheduled to leave at 06:30 and arrive in Copenhagen at 12:15.

The Copenhagen–Mumbai route operates on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Mumbai–Copenhagen flights operate on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

The five-weekly pattern is significant for both leisure and corporate passengers. It provides regular travel options without requiring travellers to route through another European, Middle Eastern or Asian hub. For businesses that depend on reliable access between India and the Nordic markets, the new timetable creates a more direct travel proposition.

The Airbus A330 deployment also gives SAS the capacity to serve a mix of passengers, including corporate travellers, visiting friends and relatives, holidaymakers, students and passengers making onward connections.

A renewed air bridge between India and Scandinavia

Mumbai is India’s financial and commercial centre, with strong links to global banking, technology, manufacturing, media, shipping, pharmaceuticals and creative industries. Copenhagen is a major centre for Nordic business, design, sustainability, life sciences and international trade.

A direct route between the two cities can reduce journey complexity for travellers who previously needed to make at least one stop. It also improves the visibility of Scandinavia as a destination for Indian travellers seeking city breaks, nature-led holidays, cruises, winter experiences and multi-country European itineraries.

For Scandinavian travellers, Mumbai is both a destination in its own right and an entry point for wider travel across India. The city offers access to Maharashtra’s cultural attractions, business districts, film industry, heritage sites and coastal experiences, while domestic aviation links can support onward journeys to destinations throughout the country.

SAS said the service is intended to unlock opportunities for travel, business and cultural exchange between Northern Europe and India. The airline has positioned the route as part of its wider international network strategy. SAS

Copenhagen connections expand travel choices

Copenhagen Airport is a key transfer point for SAS services across Denmark, Sweden, Norway and other European markets. The Mumbai route will allow arriving passengers to continue through a single hub rather than arranging separate tickets or long layovers in other regions.

SAS has highlighted onward access to destinations including New York, Boston and Toronto, alongside its European and Scandinavian network. This may be particularly useful for passengers from India travelling to multiple destinations or for business travellers whose journeys extend beyond Denmark. SAS

The service can also benefit the Nordic travel trade. Tour operators, destination marketing organisations and hotels across Denmark, Sweden and Norway now have a direct aviation connection that can support the development of India-focused packages.

For Copenhagen, the route may encourage more Indian visitors to begin or end a Nordic itinerary in Denmark. This can create opportunities for city tourism, rail-based travel, cruise extensions, regional holidays and business-event travel.

Tourism opportunities on both sides

India remains a high-value source market for many European tourism destinations, particularly for longer stays, family travel, luxury holidays, business events and multi-city itineraries. A direct service can make a destination easier to sell, especially for travellers seeking shorter travel times and simpler connections.

Scandinavia has strong appeal for Indian visitors because of its clean cities, design culture, food scene, fjords, northern lights, summer landscapes and winter activities. Copenhagen itself offers a compact city experience with museums, waterfront districts, cycling culture, gastronomy and access to other Nordic destinations.

At the same time, Mumbai can appeal to Scandinavian leisure travellers looking for an urban Indian experience. The city combines heritage architecture, contemporary hospitality, galleries, food culture, Bollywood connections and access to nearby attractions in Maharashtra.

A reliable nonstop link also matters for meetings and incentives travel. Companies with operations in India and the Nordic region may find it easier to plan conferences, executive travel and business delegations when a direct scheduled service is available.

“Direct air links create confidence for travellers and commercial partners alike. SAS’s Copenhagen–Mumbai service gives India stronger access to Scandinavia while helping Nordic destinations reach a fast-growing travel market. Its regular schedule can support holidays, meetings, trade and cultural exchange, bringing two globally connected regions closer together.”

A General Sales Agent plays an important role in connecting an overseas airline with travel agencies, corporate buyers and passengers in the local market. Its work can include trade engagement, sales support, booking distribution and awareness-building.

For travel agents, the route provides another option for customers travelling to Denmark, Sweden, Norway and other points served through Copenhagen. It may also appeal to travellers seeking a full-service long-haul product and direct access to the Nordic region.

The service is already on sale through SAS channels, with the airline listing Mumbai–Copenhagen travel information on its India website.

What the route means for travellers

The Copenhagen–Mumbai service adds competition and choice on a major India–Europe travel corridor. Its importance lies not only in the two cities it connects, but also in the onward markets that become easier to reach through Copenhagen.

For travellers, the practical value is clear: a direct flight reduces the need to change aircraft en route. For tourism bodies and travel companies, the route creates a new platform to promote Scandinavian holidays in India and Indian travel experiences in Northern Europe.

As demand for direct, efficient long-haul journeys continues to shape airline planning, SAS’s return to India gives both markets a renewed aviation connection with clear potential for tourism, trade and cultural exchange.
