Air France is creating new ties with global cinema by beginning its passenger-based film award at the 52nd Deauville American Film Festival. They will be picking A Private Life as the film most viewed by their customers during the journey. The award ceremony will happen on September 5, 2026, during the festival, and the dates are September 4 to 13, in Deauville, France.
The new Air France Travelers’ Award highlights films not through traditional jury decisions or public voting but through real viewing behaviour recorded from passengers travelling on Air France flights. The initiative reflects the airline’s growing role in promoting international cultural content while offering a new way to measure audience appreciation.
The first Deauville edition of the Air France Travelers’ Award will be presented to the team behind A Private Life, a film that was previously screened during the 2025 edition of the festival. The movie recorded the strongest performance among Air France passengers during its six-month availability on the airline’s entertainment system.
Unlike conventional cinema awards that depend on critics, juries or audience voting, the Air France distinction is based entirely on passenger engagement. The winning film was selected using onboard entertainment data, including the number of viewers, viewing frequency and total time spent watching the film.

The approach provides a direct reflection of what travellers actually choose to watch during their journeys. Air France analysed viewing habits across its fleet of 38,000 onboard screens to identify the film that generated the highest level of passenger interest.
The champagne-coloured trophy created for the award takes inspiration from the aircraft window, a symbol closely connected with travel, exploration and discovery. Fabien Pelous, Air France Executive Vice President Customer, will present the award to filmmaker Rebecca Zlotowski during the ceremony at the Deauville International Centre.
With the launch of the Air France Travelers’ Award, the airline is expanding its long-standing relationship with the film industry. The initiative reflects Air France’s ambition to support French and international cultural content while connecting audiences across continents through its global network.
The award is designed to become a recurring feature at major artistic festivals supported by Air France. It was first introduced at CANNESERIES in 2026 and is now being presented at the Deauville American Film Festival for the first time. The airline plans to extend the award to additional partner festivals from 2027.

The recognition focuses on films that premiered at major cultural events before becoming available to Air France passengers. By using actual customer preferences, the award creates a unique bridge between festival cinema and everyday travellers.
Air France has continued to invest heavily in its onboard entertainment experience, offering passengers access to a wide range of international films, series and cultural programmes on long-haul services. The airline uses its aircraft cabins not only as transportation spaces but also as platforms for global cultural exchange.
Air France has supported the Deauville American Film Festival for thirteen years, reinforcing its position as a major partner of one of France’s leading cinema events. The festival celebrates the diversity of American filmmaking, featuring both major Hollywood productions and independent cinema.
The 52nd edition of the festival runs from September 4 to 13, 2026, bringing together filmmakers, actors, industry professionals and cinema enthusiasts in the Normandy coastal city.
Through its long-haul network, Air France also plays a role in bringing American cinema to international audiences. The airline currently connects France with 18 destinations across the United States, allowing cultural exchange between Europe and North America throughout the year.
Beyond Deauville, Air France is also an official partner of several major international cultural events, including the Festival de Cannes, CANNESERIES, the Toronto International Film Festival and the Biarritz Film Festival – Nouvelles Vagues.
Alongside the award presentation, Air France will once again join forces with Barrière Group to host the Air France x Barrière Dinner, a prestigious event during the festival’s opening weekend.
The exclusive gathering will take place on September 5, 2026, following the award ceremony, bringing together members of the festival jury and leading figures connected with cinema and hospitality. The event will also include representatives from Barrière Group leadership.
The dinner will be hosted at Ciro’s, a landmark restaurant located on Deauville’s famous waterfront promenade. Guests will experience a celebration combining cinema, French hospitality and culinary creativity.
Among the highlights will be a dessert creation by Claire Heitzler, recognised as Gault & Millau’s Pastry Chef of the Year in 2013. She also creates desserts served in Air France’s La Première cabin on flights departing from Paris.
The partnership between Air France and Barrière reflects a shared commitment to luxury experiences, cultural events and international visibility. Together, the two organisations aim to create a signature festival moment that connects cinema excellence with French lifestyle traditions.
Air France’s new award highlights the growing relationship between aviation, entertainment and passenger experience. Airlines worldwide are increasingly using onboard platforms to offer more personalised services and create stronger connections with travellers.
The Air France Travelers’ Award represents a shift from traditional recognition models by allowing passengers themselves to influence cultural recognition through their actual choices. The initiative transforms aircraft cabins into spaces where global audiences discover and support creative works.
As international travel continues to evolve, airlines are increasingly focusing beyond transportation by creating complete journeys that include entertainment, hospitality and cultural experiences.
Through its partnership with Deauville and its new passenger-driven award, Air France is positioning itself at the intersection of travel and cinema, showcasing how aviation can become a powerful channel for cultural discovery worldwide.
