Official figures show why. Sea arrivals are rising sharply, while air growth remains limited. France still leads, but Germany and India are gaining ground. Meanwhile, UK arrivals have fallen. South Africa and Russia are also moving differently. As a result, Mauritius is seeing a clear shift in where visitors come from, how they arrive, and which markets could shape tourism demand through the rest of the year across the island.

Sea Arrivals Jump 55.8% as Air Growth Remains Limited

Air travel continues to deliver the overwhelming majority of Mauritius tourism arrivals. However, growth through this channel was modest during the first semester.

Tourist arrivals by air increased from 643,930 in the first half of 2025 to 645,140 in 2026, representing growth of just 0.2%.

Sea arrivals moved in the opposite direction. They increased from 14,979 to 23,331, a striking 55.8% rise.

This widening gap means maritime access contributed disproportionately to Mauritius’ overall tourism growth during the period, even though air transport remains the dominant gateway.

France Remains Mauritius’ Largest Listed Source Market

France continued to lead the main source markets with 153,048 arrivals during the first half of 2026. This represented a 0.8% increase from 151,797 a year earlier.

Réunion Island remained another major regional market, although arrivals slipped 0.6% to 66,459.

Together, these figures underline the continuing importance of nearby French-speaking markets to Mauritius tourism.

Germany and India Deliver Double-Digit Tourism Growth

Germany emerged as one of the strongest-performing major markets. German arrivals jumped 13.4%, from 53,117 to 60,227.

India also gained significant ground. Tourist arrivals rose 11.9% to 41,966, compared with 37,501 during the first semester of 2025.

South Africa strengthened as well, with arrivals increasing 7.1% to 51,858.

Russia recorded more moderate growth of 3.7%, reaching 16,918 visitors.

UK Arrivals Fall 16% as Source Markets Reshuffle

The United Kingdom recorded the sharpest decline among the major markets listed by Statistics Mauritius. Arrivals fell from 71,382 to 59,954, a decrease of 16%.

This means Germany moved very close to the UK in absolute visitor numbers during the first half of 2026.

The contrast between stronger German, Indian and South African demand and weaker UK traffic shows that Mauritius’ tourism recovery is becoming increasingly uneven across source markets.

Mauritius Tourism Growth Is Becoming More Diverse

The seven main markets generated 450,430 arrivals in the first semester of 2026, up 1.1% from 445,432 a year earlier. However, their combined share of total arrivals eased slightly from 67.6% to 67.4%.

The official data therefore show a tourism market that is still growing, but changing at the same time. Sea travel is expanding quickly, Germany and India are gaining strength, and the UK is losing ground. For Mauritius, the next phase of tourism growth may depend increasingly on balancing traditional markets with faster-growing regional and long-haul sources.
