United Airlines has extended its pre-ordering of fresh meals programme in United Economy to apply to domestic and regional flights with distances over 900 miles in North America and the Caribbean regions. As announced on October 19, 2026, the extension lowers the previous minimum distance of more than 1,190 miles, thus making the service available for 420 extra daily flights. This could mean that more than 65,000 new passengers will be provided with pre-ordering options each day, which would provide travellers with additional choice of food before a domestic trip. It is a continuation of the programme which was launched by the company for long flights in January 2026. Travellers are now able to choose from eligible fresh meals using United Airlines website and app before their flights.

United Lowers the Meal Preorder Distance Requirement

Under the revised programme, passengers travelling on eligible United Economy flights covering more than 900 miles can access fresh food preorders.

Previously, the facility was restricted to flights exceeding 1,190 miles. By lowering the distance requirement, United has extended the service to a wider selection of domestic and regional connections, including several routes linking its major airport hubs.

The expansion covers an additional 420 flights daily across North America and the Caribbean. United estimates that up to 65,000 additional passengers per day will have access to the facility.

The newly eligible services include flights connecting Chicago with Houston, Denver with San Francisco, and Houston with Washington, D.C.

These routes are important connections within United’s domestic network, serving passengers travelling between major business centres, metropolitan destinations and international gateways.

Fresh Meals Available Through United’s Website and App

Passengers can browse the available dining selections through United’s official website or mobile application.

The menu features a rotating collection of fresh sandwiches, burgers, pasta dishes, burritos and breakfast options. The selections change monthly, giving passengers access to different meals depending on their travel dates.

Current offerings include a pork mojo burrito, a Chicago patty melt created in collaboration with Jeff Mauro of Mauro Provisions, a hot honey chicken and waffle sandwich, and a cinnamon apple waffle.

Passengers can also preorder eligible Bistro on Board selections, signature snackboxes and other retail items.

The ordering window opens five days before departure and closes 24 hours before the scheduled flight time. Travellers can find available options under the Trips section on United’s website.

Passengers using the airline’s mobile application receive a notification when meal preordering becomes available for their flight.

However, United notes that preordered meals may not be available under certain operational circumstances.

Chicago, Houston and Other Routes Gain Dining Options

The expansion is particularly relevant for travellers using United’s major domestic hubs to reach other destinations across the United States.

The Chicago-Houston connection serves passengers travelling between two important commercial and aviation centres. Houston also provides onward access to destinations across Texas, Latin America and the Caribbean.

The Denver-San Francisco route connects two major gateways for domestic and international travel. San Francisco serves as an important departure point for visitors travelling to California’s coastal destinations, wine regions and Pacific-facing cities.

Meanwhile, Houston-Washington, D.C. connects travellers between the southern United States and the country’s capital region, which attracts visitors for its museums, historic landmarks and government institutions.

By extending advance dining options across these connections, United is making the service available to more passengers travelling for holidays, business and family visits.

United’s Earlier Meal Preorder Programme

United introduced its fresh Economy meal preorder service in January 2026, initially covering flights exceeding 1,190 miles across the United States, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean.

The programme allowed passengers to select fresh food before boarding rather than relying entirely on the meals available during onboard service.

The airline also planned changes to its Economy dining arrangements, with fresh entrees becoming available through advance ordering from March 1, 2026. Signature snackboxes, packaged snacks and beverages continued to be offered for purchase onboard.

Meal preordering was already established in United’s premium cabins. The airline first introduced advance ordering through its mobile application for premium passengers in 2021. According to the carrier, customer satisfaction scores on domestic flights increased by almost 40 per cent following the introduction of the facility.

Food Service Expansion Accompanies Wider Cabin Investments

The new dining expansion is part of a larger strategy by United Airlines to upgrade its passenger experience on board. United Airlines has increased Starlink connectivity to its aircraft and introduced further entertainment options with the installation of more seatback screens. Starlink Wi-Fi is installed on select aircraft and is complimentary for MileagePlus members. The airline has also been increasing its entertainment content in partnership with some of the biggest media providers. By the year 2027, the carrier plans to install seatback screens in around 1,000 of its aircraft. Newer aircraft from the company are fitted with large 27-inch, 4K OLED screens. Starting from November 1, 2026, United Airlines plans to update its Tapas, Takeoff and Recline snackboxes with new offerings. United will also be offering seasonal food and drink products, including the special Wishes snackbox that will be offered in partnership with the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The new preorder system will allow Economy class passengers to enjoy new meals on eligible short-haul flights.
