Air Astana is preparing to launch new non-stop flights between Almaty and Tokyo, establishing a direct air connection between Kazakhstan’s largest city and the Japanese capital.

The new international service will officially begin on 30 November 2026, when the inaugural outbound flight departs Almaty for Tokyo.

The first return flight from Tokyo to Almaty is scheduled for 1 December 2026, marking the start of regular operations in both directions.

The new route will strengthen direct connectivity between Kazakhstan and Japan, providing travellers with a non-stop option between the two countries while supporting growing opportunities for tourism, business and international travel.

“The launch of direct air services to Japan is a key priority and supports our ambition to strengthen Kazakhstan’s leadership as the hub of Central Asia and Caucasus. Tokyo, our 22nd new route in 2026, is one of the world’s leading centres for business and tourism, and the new service, operated by Airbus A321LR aircraft, will provide a significant boost to trade, economic and cultural ties between Kazakhstan and Japan.” said Ibrahim Canliel, CEO of Air Astana.

Air Astana will operate the Almaty–Tokyo Narita route twice a week, deploying Airbus A321LR aircraft featuring both Business Class and Economy Class cabins.

Almaty–Tokyo Flight Schedule

The proposed timetable is based on local times and remains subject to government approval.

KC171 from Almaty to Tokyo will operate every Monday and Thursday. The flight is scheduled to leave Almaty at 21:55 and reach Tokyo Narita International Airport at 09:25 the following morning.

The return service, KC172 from Tokyo to Almaty, will operate on Tuesdays and Fridays. It will depart Tokyo Narita at 10:55 and arrive in Almaty at 16:20 on the same day.

The new connection will also strengthen the existing cooperation between Air Astana and Japan Airlines. Services linking Almaty and Tokyo Narita will be offered under a codeshare arrangement, extending the partnership between the two carriers.

Fares and Booking

Round-trip fares will begin at US$797 for Economy Class, while Business Class return tickets will start from US$3,177. These prices include applicable taxes and charges.

Passengers will be able to purchase tickets through Air Astana’s official website and mobile application, as well as through authorised travel agencies.

Visa Requirements for Japan and Kazakhstan

Here’s the expanded four-paragraph version:

The new Almaty–Tokyo connection is supported by convenient entry arrangements for Japanese travellers visiting Kazakhstan, making the Central Asian country more accessible for tourism, leisure trips and short-term visits.

Japanese passport holders can travel to Kazakhstan without obtaining a visa for stays of up to 30 days. This allows eligible visitors to plan shorter holidays and tourism trips without completing a visa application before departure.

The requirements are different for travellers heading in the opposite direction. Citizens of Kazakhstan are required to obtain a visa before travelling to Japan, meaning passengers should complete the necessary application process ahead of their journey.

Travellers on both sides should check the latest passport, visa and entry requirements before departure, as immigration rules and documentation requirements can change. This is particularly important when planning international journeys between Kazakhstan and Japan.
