Thailand leads the rankings as the prime solo-value destination due to lower surcharges on trips to hot global destinations. Solo travel can offer the freedom, flexibility and control one has over a holiday, but this freedom might come at a price. Holiday pricing research shows that traveling alone can be considerably more expensive per person than couples sharing the accommodation. Yet the size of this extra cost varies sharply between destinations.

An analysis of seven-night holiday prices highlights several destinations where this so-called “solo surcharge” is relatively modest. Thailand performs particularly strongly, with Khao Lak recording the lowest premium among the destinations analysed. Phuket, Pattaya and Bangkok also emerge as potentially attractive choices for travelers trying to avoid the steep additional costs associated with occupying accommodation alone.

European destinations including Bulgaria’s Bourgas Area and Athens also offer comparatively manageable premiums, while Dubai provides another long-haul alternative. At the opposite end of the scale, Barcelona, Corfu and Ibiza show how dramatically the cost can increase when a traveler books alone.

Khao Lak (Thailand) Emerges as a Strong Choice for Solo Travelers

Khao Lak stands out as the most favourable destination in the comparison for travelers worried about the financial penalty of holidaying alone. Located along Thailand’s Andaman coast, the destination combines beaches, resorts and access to natural attractions with a relatively small difference between solo and shared holiday prices.

A seven-night Khao Lak holiday averages around £1,400 for one traveler, compared with approximately £1,155 per person when two adults share. This creates a solo premium of about 21%, the lowest surcharge in the destinations examined.

The figures are important because accommodation is often one of the biggest challenges facing solo holidaymakers. A hotel room may cost almost the same whether it contains one guest or two, leaving the individual traveler responsible for the full room expense. Khao Lak’s smaller price difference therefore makes it notable for people who want a long-haul beach holiday without facing one of the market’s biggest solo penalties.

Phuket, Pattaya and Bangkok Strengthen Thailand’s Position

Thailand performs particularly well because Khao Lak is not its only destination with comparatively favourable solo pricing. Phuket has a reported 23% solo surcharge, putting it close behind Khao Lak. This gives independent travelers another major beach destination where traveling alone does not necessarily create an extreme price gap.

Phuket offers a very different holiday environment, with large beaches, established resort districts, restaurants and connections to surrounding islands. Pattaya also appears among destinations associated with lower solo surcharges. The Gulf coast destination combines beaches with entertainment, restaurants and access to surrounding attractions.

Bangkok adds a major city option. Travelers can build an itinerary around temples, markets, food districts, shopping areas and cultural attractions without needing a travel companion. Having several Thai destinations performing comparatively well also gives solo travelers greater flexibility to choose between beach, resort and urban experiences rather than selecting a destination purely because of accommodation costs.

Bulgaria Offers a Lower-Cost European Alternative

Travelers who prefer Europe can consider Bulgaria’s Bourgas Area, which combines a comparatively low overall holiday price with a more moderate solo surcharge than several better-known European destinations.

A seven-night holiday in the area averages approximately £777 for one traveler, equivalent to roughly ₹89,000, with a reported solo premium of around 31%. Although the percentage increase is higher than in Khao Lak and Phuket, the comparatively low starting price can keep the final holiday bill manageable.

The Bourgas region also opens access to Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast, where beaches, seaside resorts and historic settlements can be combined within one trip. For price-conscious travelers, this illustrates why the surcharge percentage should not be considered alone. A destination with a slightly higher percentage premium may still cost substantially less overall if its base holiday prices are lower.

Athens (Greece) Combines Cultural Travel With a Moderate Solo Premium

Athens provides another European choice for independent travelers. A seven-night holiday in the Greek capital averages around £1,274 for one person, or approximately ₹1.47 lakh, while the solo premium is estimated at 33%.

That puts Athens above the lowest-surcharge Thai destinations but well below some European leisure markets where traveling alone can create a much larger difference.

For solo visitors, Athens provides a dense concentration of archaeological sites, museums, historic neighbourhoods, restaurants and public spaces. It can therefore work particularly well for travelers who want an itinerary built around sightseeing rather than spending most of their holiday inside a resort.

The figures again demonstrate the importance of comparing the complete package. Travelers should examine airfare, accommodation, transfers and other included services rather than assuming that the destination with the lowest advertised hotel rate will automatically provide the best solo value.

Dubai (UAE) Shows Why Long-Haul Holidays Can Remain Competitive

Dubai records a 31% solo surcharge, putting it alongside the destinations where the gap between individual and shared holiday costs remains comparatively restrained within the analysis.

The result may appear surprising because Dubai is generally associated with premium hotels, major attractions and high-end experiences. However, the structure of a package holiday can influence the final percentage.

Airfares account for an individual passenger regardless of whether that person travels alone or with somebody else. When flights represent a substantial share of an expensive long-haul package, the accommodation cost created by single occupancy can form a smaller proportion of the overall price.

For travelers, Dubai consequently demonstrates why long-haul destinations should not automatically be dismissed as expensive choices for solo holidays. The headline package price may be higher, but the additional percentage charged for travelling without a companion can sometimes be smaller.

Barcelona, Corfu and Ibiza (Spain) Show the Other Side of Solo Pricing

The picture changes significantly in some popular European destinations. Barcelona records the highest solo surcharge in the comparison, demonstrating how expensive single occupancy can become in heavily visited markets.

A seven-night Barcelona holiday averages approximately £1,834 for a solo traveler, compared with around £1,001 per person when two adults share. That represents an extraordinary 84% premium for travelling alone.

Corfu follows with a reported 81% surcharge, while Ibiza reaches approximately 80%. These differences mean a traveler could pay dramatically more simply because there is nobody sharing the accommodation cost.

The figures do not mean these destinations should be avoided. Instead, they underline why solo travellers need to compare prices differently. Looking only at a package’s headline cost can hide the financial impact of single occupancy.

For travelers planning their next independent adventure, comparing the solo price against the per-person price for two adults can reveal the real cost of travelling alone. On that measure, destinations such as Khao Lak, Phuket, the Bourgas Area, Dubai and Athens offer a significantly different pricing picture from Barcelona, Corfu and Ibiza.

Solo travel may still carry an extra charge, but choosing the right destination can stop that independence from becoming an unnecessarily expensive luxury.
