St. Kitts has taken a significant step forward in strengthening its position within the Caribbean cruise industry with the official commencement of construction on a new cruise terminal at Port Zante. These upgrades will allow smoother and faster movement of travellers arriving and departing through the island, creating a more efficient cruise experience while meeting international industry standards.

The development comes at a time when St. Kitts continues to experience strong demand from cruise travellers. The destination has already welcomed more than 950,000 cruise passengers during the current season, highlighting the island’s growing importance as a Caribbean cruise destination and reinforcing the need for expanded infrastructure.

The groundbreaking ceremony followed months of detailed planning, coordination, and cooperation between multiple organisations involved in bringing the project to reality. Leadership has been provided by the St. Christopher Air and Sea Ports Authority (SCASPA), the Urban Development Corporation (UDC), and the Homeporting Steering Committee, chaired by Melnecia Marshall, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the St. Kitts Tourism Authority.

The project team has worked closely with Baley Project Management and Construction Inc., along with technical specialists, architects, government agencies, financial advisors, and tourism industry partners. Their combined efforts have helped move the development from the initial planning phase into active construction.

The new terminal is expected to become a major tourism asset for St. Kitts, supporting the country’s ambition to attract more cruise operations while delivering stronger economic returns from the sector. By developing homeport capabilities, the island aims to capture a larger share of cruise-related spending that traditionally benefits major departure ports around the world.

Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr. Terrance Drew, highlighted that the project reflects the government’s commitment to advancing its Sustainable Island State Agenda. The development demonstrates a focus on building long-term tourism infrastructure while creating opportunities that support economic growth, sustainability, and national development.

With the construction of the Port Zante cruise terminal now underway, St. Kitts is preparing for a new chapter in Caribbean cruise tourism. It began with dialogue, trust, and relationships that have been carefully cultivated over many years. It reflects the collective efforts of the Government, our public sector agencies, technical experts, financial advisors, and private sector partners, all working toward a common goal: advancing the future of St. Kitts and Nevis. The ceremony represents our determination to invest in infrastructure that strengthens our economy, creates new opportunities for our people, and enhances the competitiveness of St. Kitts and Nevis within the global cruise industry.” 

Once it becomes fully operational, the terminal is expected to transform the overall visitor journey, streamline port operations, and strengthen St. Kitts and Nevis’ position as one of the Caribbean’s premier cruise turnaround destinations.
