Air Peace Enhances UK-Nigeria Travel Connectivity with Launch of Direct Flights Between Abuja and London Heathrow in October 2025
Image generated with AiAir Peace, Nigeria’s leading airline, has officially secured approval to operate its long-awaited direct flight route between Abuja and London-Heathrow Airport (LHR), marking a major milestone in the airline’s ambitious expansion plans. Currently, the airline operates flights between Lagos and London-Gatwick Airport (LGW) but has long sought access to Heathrow, one of the world’s busiest airports. Due to limited slot availability at Heathrow, Air Peace had initially been forced to operate from Gatwick, launching its Lagos-Gatwick service in March 2024. Now, the airline’s efforts have borne fruit, allowing it to expand its presence at Heathrow.
The new Abuja-Heathrow service will begin on October 26, 2025, operating four times a week. The flights will be serviced by Air Peace’s Boeing 777 aircraft, with a fleet of three planes currently in operation. Two of the 777-200s seat 274 passengers in a two-class configuration, while the single 777-300 offers a larger capacity, seating 319 passengers. The new route will be an addition to the airline’s existing Lagos-Gatwick service, which operates three times weekly and will continue during the winter of 2025-2026.

This new service to Heathrow will significantly enhance Air Peace’s position in the highly competitive UK-Nigeria market, where British Airways and Virgin Atlantic have long dominated. Air Peace’s expansion into Heathrow will provide the airline with an opportunity to tap into a lucrative market, bolstering its global network and further solidifying its role in the UK-Nigeria aviation market.
For several years, Air Peace has argued that UK-based carriers received preferential treatment in gaining access to Heathrow slots, thereby limiting competition from Nigerian airlines. Despite these claims, the UK Government has consistently assured Air Peace that Heathrow slots would be made available to the airline once they became free. The UK Government emphasized that it did not block additional services but rather awaited the availability of slots at Heathrow, which are often in high demand due to congestion.

In September 2025, Air Peace again reached out to the UK Department of Transport, requesting a review of its Heathrow access application. The airline also reapplied for slots to operate direct flights between Abuja and Heathrow. Unfortunately, the application was rejected as it had been submitted too late for consideration in the winter 2024/25 and summer 2025 scheduling periods. However, Heathrow’s slot management system is dynamic, with slots occasionally opening up when airlines adjust their schedules, drop routes, or relinquish unused slots under the “use-it-or-lose-it” policy. It appears Air Peace has successfully secured the necessary four slot pairs (both arrival and departure slots) to launch the Abuja-Heathrow service at last.
While the future of the airline’s Lagos-Gatwick service remains uncertain, it is expected that Air Peace will continue to expand its international network. The addition of Heathrow flights is a major step forward for the airline, enhancing its presence at one of the world’s busiest airports.

Air Peace’s Expanding Global Network
Beyond its new Heathrow service, Air Peace has plans to further broaden its global reach. Although the airline faces ongoing restrictions preventing it from flying to Dubai, it has confirmed plans to initiate services to Guangzhou, China, in October 2025. Additionally, Air Peace will begin flights to Antigua and Barbuda in the Caribbean starting in September 2025.
To support these new international routes, Air Peace is expecting the delivery of a fourth Boeing 777 aircraft. The airline’s current fleet includes a range of aircraft types, such as Airbus A320s, Boeing 737s, Boeing 777s, Dornier 328-300s, Embraer 145s, and Embraer 195-E2s. Some of these aircraft are operated through wet-lease arrangements with other carriers. Air Peace currently flies 39 routes to 21 destinations in 11 countries, reflecting its robust expansion strategy.
The airline’s leadership is committed to growing its fleet and expanding its international services to meet the growing demand for connectivity between Nigeria and global destinations. Air Peace’s increasing network of international routes is poised to make it a key player in the global aviation market, and its leadership remains focused on enhancing the passenger experience and operational efficiency across its services.
Opportunities and Challenges Ahead for Air Peace
While Air Peace’s future looks promising, the airline faces challenges as it continues to grow. A significant hurdle has been the restriction preventing the airline from operating flights to Dubai, which has limited its access to the Middle Eastern market. Despite this, the airline remains determined to overcome these challenges and expand its services to key international destinations. With the launch of Guangzhou and Antigua routes, Air Peace is diversifying its portfolio and increasing its global footprint.

Air Peace is also committed to maintaining a strong domestic network. It operates numerous routes across Nigeria, facilitating greater connectivity within the country. As Nigeria’s aviation industry continues to expand, Air Peace is well-positioned to capitalize on the increasing demand for air travel within the country and across the African continent.
Looking Ahead: A Stronger Presence on the Global Stage
As Air Peace prepares to launch its Abuja-Heathrow flights, the airline is poised to take on a larger role in the international aviation market. The successful acquisition of coveted Heathrow slots will help propel the airline’s global ambitions and provide a solid foundation for future growth. With a diverse fleet, an expanding network, and plans for further international routes, Air Peace is ready to strengthen its presence on the world stage. The airline’s continued expansion is expected to position it as a key player in the increasingly competitive global airline industry.
