Southern Railway has introduced additional weekend special train services between Chennai and Podanur from July 3 to August 2 to accommodate rising passenger demand across Tamil Nadu. Passengers travelling between Chennai and western Tamil Nadu will have more rail travel options over the coming weeks as Southern Railway has introduced special weekend train services linking Dr MGR Chennai Central and Podanur. The temporary trains have been scheduled to handle the seasonal rise in passenger traffic, provide additional confirmed seats, and reduce pressure on regular services that often witness heavy demand during weekends.

The special services will remain in operation from July 3 to August 2, offering extra connectivity every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The move is expected to make travel easier for people commuting for work, education, family visits, business activities and leisure trips.

Additional Weekend Services Introduced

Train No. 06027 Dr MGR Chennai Central–Podanur Special will depart from Dr MGR Chennai Central at 6:35 p.m. every Friday, Saturday and Sunday during the operating period. The train is scheduled to reach Podanur at 4:00 a.m. the following day, providing an overnight journey that allows passengers to arrive early in the morning.

The return service, Train No. 06028 Podanur–Dr MGR Chennai Central Special, will also operate on the same three days each week. It will leave Podanur at 7:40 a.m. and reach Dr MGR Chennai Central at 4:45 p.m. on the same day.

Over the course of the month-long operation, each train will complete 15 scheduled trips, adding substantial seating capacity on one of the state’s busiest railway routes.

Major Stations Covered on the Route

To maximise passenger convenience, the special trains will halt at several important stations connecting central and western Tamil Nadu with Chennai.

Scheduled stoppages include:

• Salem
• Morappur
• Jolarpettai
• Katpadi
• Arakkonam

These stations serve important residential, commercial and industrial regions, enabling passengers from multiple districts to benefit from the additional train services.
