The first-ever Portugal Investment Forum concluded in Porto after a successful nine-day programme that brought together more than 300 prominent participants, including over 150 investors and representatives of family offices. The nationwide initiative focused on how Portugal can build on a decade of economic expansion and turn its progress into sustainable, long-term benefits for the country and its people.

Beginning on 1 October 2026, the forum opened with gatherings in Lagos and Quinta do Lago in the Algarve before moving to Lisbon and Estoril. The programme ended in Porto on 9 October. Across these destinations, participants attended 15 specially organised panel discussions, each followed by an expert-led round-table session designed to encourage practical dialogue and the exchange of investment ideas.

Discussions explored the main forces behind Portugal’s economic growth, the motivations attracting international investors, and the industries offering the strongest opportunities for future development. Speakers also examined how Portugal could strengthen its competitive position against other investment destinations and attract global capital while supporting lasting economic stability.

At the Lisbon gathering, Rogério Fernandes Ferreira, founder of RFF Lawyers and former Secretary of State for Fiscal Affairs, highlighted the importance of a stable and transparent investment environment. He emphasised that investor confidence depends on clear regulations, consistent policies and trust, all of which play an essential role in encouraging long-term financial commitments.

“Portugal has the ingredients. Its next challenge is making sure they work together.”

Ricardo Assunção, board member of Amorim Luxury Group, also underscored the benefits of the quality of life Portugal offers, explaining: “Investors first choose where they want to live, then the investment comes.”

The concluding event in Porto featured Sílvia Mota, who serves as CEO of MEXT, chairwoman and CEO of Emerge, and co-founder of Moon Capital.

The forums brought together entrepreneurs, investment fund managers, industry representatives and senior Portuguese business leaders. They also attracted influential figures from education, healthcare, professional associations, impact investment, property development, sports, culture, tourism and foreign investment.

Discussions focused on several major challenges shaping Portugal’s future. Speakers stressed the importance of reducing bureaucratic obstacles that could slow economic expansion, creating better opportunities to keep skilled professionals in the country and tackling growing concerns surrounding housing availability and affordability.

Peter Villax, chief executive of Mediceus, partner at Biovance Capital and former president of the Family Business Association, praised the forum as an exceptional international gathering that encouraged meaningful nationwide dialogue on Portugal’s future and delivered considerable value to the country.

“Portugal has seen a gradual and consistent economic uplift that has been building for more than a decade, but this national discussion has highlighted the challenges and opportunities of Portugal’s next chapter,” says Paul Stannard, chairman and founder of event organisers Portugal Pathways and the Portugal Investment Owners Club.

“Some of the common themes have been around how the country continues to attract talent and investment while ensuring its people see and feel the benefits.

“We have deliberately taken this national debate around the country, and what we look forward to most is sharing the outputs with a clear set of objectives.

“We want these events to have been more than just words; so it is carried through into collective execution. We’ve celebrated what is working and been honest about the areas that need attention.

“And because every debate and interview is being filmed, this is a conversation the whole of Portugal and international investors from around the globe can follow, not just the people in the room.”

The forum also featured renowned Portuguese big-wave surfer Hugo Vau, who gained international attention in 2018 after reportedly riding an enormous wave measuring approximately 35 metres at Nazaré, a feat widely considered among the most remarkable in surfing history.

Serving as an ambassador for the Portugal Investment Owners Club, Vau attended as a special guest and shared how Portugal’s determination, ambition and collaborative spirit can help drive the country forward.

Reflecting on his extraordinary surfing achievement, Vau emphasised that success was not the result of individual courage alone. It required years of careful preparation, strong teamwork and the combined efforts of numerous people working towards a shared goal.

He drew a parallel between his experience at sea and Portugal’s economic ambitions, stressing that the nation must embrace the same unity, resilience and long-term commitment to maintain its economic momentum. According to Vau, sustained progress depends on businesses, investors and communities working together to build on Portugal’s achievements and secure future growth.

“To make that sustainable, you have to ensure everyone can feel the benefits, so everyone pulls in the same direction; demonstrating that Portugal is stronger than the sum of its parts.”

The forum’s key discussions, insights and outcomes will be published through a collection of reports and press announcements in the weeks ahead. These updates will feature recordings of all 15 panel discussions, alongside more than 100 interviews with participants. The material will be accessible through Portugal Pathways and the Portugal Investment Owners Club.

Additional updates are expected to appear on the Portugal Investment Forum’s official website by the end of the week beginning 12 October 2026.

Meanwhile, organisers have confirmed that discussions about Portugal’s investment future will continue beyond this year’s events. During the concluding forum in Porto, they unveiled plans to launch the first-ever Portugal Investment Summit in 2027.

The upcoming summit is expected to attract more than 1,000 institutional and experienced investors, together with influential stakeholders from international markets. The gathering aims to strengthen investment opportunities, encourage global collaboration and support Portugal’s next phase of economic development. Organisers will announce further information about the event at a later date.
