In a disturbing turn of events, two Carnival Cruise Line guests have filed a lawsuit against the company, claiming they were victims of a bed bug infestation during their trip aboard the Carnival Horizon earlier this year. The passengers, Catherine Shockley and William Maycock, both from Maryland, allege they experienced painful injuries and significant distress after discovering a bed bug infestation in their stateroom.

This lawsuit, filed on October 28 in the Southern District of Florida, highlights the growing concern over cleanliness and safety aboard cruise ships. The plaintiffs accuse Carnival Cruise Line of negligence, citing a failure to properly maintain the ship’s cabins and a lack of response when they alerted the crew about the issue.

What Happened on the Carnival Horizon?

The incident occurred in mid-February, when Shockley and Maycock checked into their stateroom aboard the Carnival Horizon. According to the complaint, the guests began to experience itchy red marks on their arms, legs, and other areas of their bodies. Upon further inspection, Shockley allegedly discovered live bed bugs in various stages of development, along with fecal spots and eggs. The lawsuit includes photographs showing more than 30 individual bites on the passengers, which caused them considerable pain and distress.

Shockley and Maycock were forced to seek medical treatment for the bites, which left large, painful welts on their bodies. They also reported suffering from loss of sleep, mental distress, and economic loss due to their experience. The guests claim that despite notifying the ship’s crew about the infestation, no immediate action was taken to address the problem in their cabin.

The Allegations Against Carnival Cruise Line

Shockley and Maycock allege that Carnival’s response to the issue was inadequate. They argue that the company was aware of the bed bug problem, as the crew had been fumigating other staterooms on the same floor before the guests embarked. This claim suggests that the company knew about the infestation before the guests boarded, yet failed to take the necessary steps to prevent them from being exposed.

The lawsuit accuses Carnival Cruise Line of negligence in failing to properly maintain the ship, and of neglecting to warn guests about potential risks. The plaintiffs are seeking damages for the injuries, emotional distress, and property damage they incurred, as well as a jury trial to hold the company accountable for their actions.

Grant I. Schwarz, the plaintiffs’ attorney, stated in an email to USA TODAY, “My clients trusted Carnival Cruise Line to provide a safe and sanitary cruise vacation experience. Instead, they were exposed to a bed bug infestation that caused painful injuries and long-term anxiety. This lawsuit seeks accountability to prevent future harm to other passengers.”

Carnival’s Response to the Lawsuit

In response to the allegations, Carnival Cruise Line has declined to comment on the pending litigation but reiterated the company’s commitment to guest safety. Carnival emphasized that it has a comprehensive sanitation process to address the rare occurrences of bed bugs, including weekly inspections by stateroom attendants, which cover not only beds but also curtains, carpeting, and other areas prone to infestation.

The company also stated that when bed bugs are discovered, affected cabins and nearby rooms undergo chemical treatment, followed by re-inspection over the course of several months. Routine pest control treatments are conducted during regular maintenance procedures to prevent infestations.

How to Avoid Bed Bugs on Cruises

For travelers heading out on their next cruise, this case underscores the importance of vigilance when it comes to potential bed bug issues. While bed bugs can be found in a variety of settings, from hotels to airports, they can also appear on cruise ships. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises travelers that the cleanliness of a place does not necessarily determine whether bed bugs are present.

Though bed bugs are not known to transmit diseases, their bites can cause itching, insomnia, and, in rare cases, allergic reactions. To avoid bringing bed bugs home, travelers should take precautions when staying in any accommodation, including inspecting the bed and surrounding areas for signs of the pests, such as blood stains or fecal spots.

What This Means for Future Cruise Travelers

This lawsuit not only highlights the importance of proper maintenance and guest safety on cruise ships but also serves as a reminder to all travelers about the potential risks they may face when booking a cruise. While the experience of Shockley and Maycock is unfortunate, it has brought to light crucial safety concerns that may prompt further scrutiny of cruise line cleanliness standards.

For those planning to embark on a cruise, it is essential to know that cruise lines, including Carnival, have strict procedures in place to address pest-related issues. By staying informed and aware, travelers can better protect themselves from potential discomforts during their vacation.
