On World Environment Day, The Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL), India’s foremost hospitality group, continues to champion environmental responsibility through Paathya, its comprehensive ESG+ framework. Across its Delhi-NCR properties—including Taj Mahal, New Delhi; Taj Palace, New Delhi; Taj Surajkund Resort & Spa; Taj Damdama Lake Resort & Spa, Gurugram; Taj City Centre Gurugram; Vivanta New Delhi, Dwarka; and Ambassador, New Delhi – IHCL SeleQtions—the company is advancing a holistic approach to water conservation, energy efficiency, and resource stewardship. This strategy emphasises circularity, innovation, and long-term environmental impact, ensuring sustainability is embedded at every operational layer.

At Taj Mahal, New Delhi, a LEED Platinum and EarthCheck Platinum-certified landmark, sustainability has evolved from intention to measurable outcomes. The hotel has earned the LEED Zero Water certification, verified by Green Business Certification Inc., a milestone highlighting its leadership in water management. This recognition, developed alongside the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED programme, confirms the hotel has achieved net zero water goals, reflecting a commitment to industry-leading environmental practices.

Water recycling at Taj Mahal, New Delhi now achieves 97% efficiency, with 92% of treated water reused across hotel operations. The property employs rainwater harvesting, greywater treatment, and circular use for laundry, flushing, cooling towers, and landscaping. An advanced effluent treatment system—the first of its kind in Indian hospitality—recycles laundry water within operations. Energy and water efficiency are further enhanced through VFD hydro-pneumatic pumps, sensor-driven IoT cooling towers, drip irrigation, low-flow faucets, chemical-free cooling tower treatment, and dedicated collection tanks for swimming pool overflow, exemplifying an integrated circular ecosystem.

Guest experiences are equally informed by sustainability. Taj Mahal, New Delhi fosters mindful dining and low-waste culinary practices. Signature initiatives, such as Mitti ka Swaad at Varq, draw inspiration from Bhoole Bisre – A Living Archive and A Testament to Time, reviving traditional recipes, earthenware cooking, and the responsible use of seasonal, regional ingredients, blending culture with conscientious gastronomy.

Taj Palace, New Delhi, also a LEED Platinum and EarthCheck Platinum-certified hotel, combines advanced engineering with sustainability-led design. Its Water Treatment and Bottling Plant employs a three-stage purification process integrating reverse osmosis, ozonation, and UV treatment. Smart fixtures, including sensor taps and aerators, reduce water use in public areas by up to 85%. The hotel’s infrastructure supports daily recycling of up to 80 kilolitres of water, while its upgraded sewage treatment plant using MBR technology processes 450 KLD for reuse in cooling towers, landscaping, and maintenance. A dedicated 700-metre pipeline further extends treated water to external gardens, maximising resource efficiency beyond the hotel premises.

Through these initiatives, IHCL demonstrates that luxury hospitality and environmental stewardship can coexist seamlessly. By embedding circular systems, advanced technology, and resource-conscious operations, the company ensures a sustainable, future-ready model that inspires both industry peers and guests alike.

Mr. Pradyumna Singh Rathore, General Manager, Taj Palace, New Delhi, added, “Sustainability today requires a holistic and integrated approach that brings together technology, design, and operational practices. Under Paathya, our organisation’s ESG+ framework, our focus is on embedding resource efficiency into the core of how we operate, ensuring that every intervention contributes to a larger, measurable impact across the ecosystem.”

At Taj Surajkund Resort & Spa, Delhi NCR, a pioneering EarthCheck Platinum-certified property, sustainable water management is at the core of operations. Each month, roughly 3,500 kilolitres of water are treated through advanced sewage and effluent treatment facilities, then efficiently reused across irrigation networks, cooling systems, and landscaped gardens. The resort has integrated rainwater harvesting and installed water-smart fixtures including dual-flush toilets, sensor-activated mixers, and aerator-equipped showers. Complementing these measures, an in-house bottling plant supports a reduction in external plastic consumption. The resort has also strengthened its renewable energy commitment by expanding its solar infrastructure, adding a 90 kW installation to the existing 50 kW plant. Collectively, this solar setup is projected to generate approximately 146,000 kWh annually, delivering estimated annual savings of ₹15 lakhs and a 36-month ROI.

Meanwhile, at Taj Damdama Lake Resort & Spa, Gurugram, water conservation follows a multi-faceted approach combining technology, operational efficiency, and innovation. Treated wastewater from the resort’s sewage treatment plant is redirected to cooling towers, irrigation systems, and cleaning operations, ensuring water is optimally recycled. Sensor-operated systems further allow precise water control across guest and service areas. A landmark initiative is the in-house water bottling facility capable of producing 150 bottles per hour, dramatically cutting reliance on single-use plastics. In just eight months, this programme has eliminated over 1,40,000 500 ml plastic bottles and prevented an additional 2,80,000 smaller 250 ml bottles from use. This initiative has reduced around 70,000 litres of packaged water consumption and cut total plastic waste by more than 2.8 tonnes, underscoring the resort’s leadership in sustainable hospitality.

Mr. Vinod Pandey, Area Director – Operations and General Manager, Taj Damdama Lake Resort & Spa, Gurugram, said, “At IHCL, sustainability is approached as a collective and continuous journey rather than a set of standalone initiatives. Through Paathya, we are focused on building systems that drive long-term value by integrating environmental responsibility into everyday operations. Water conservation and waste reduction are key pillars within this approach, contributing to a more resilient and responsible hospitality ecosystem.”

At Vivanta New Delhi, Dwarka, sustainable practices are integrated into every aspect of daily operations, emphasising water conservation, plastic minimisation, and energy efficiency. The hotel’s sewage treatment plant processes 320 KL of water daily, which is then reused for landscaping and cooling tower requirements. Additionally, the effluent treatment plant recycles 50 KL of laundry water each day. Waste reduction is further supported through an in-house bottling facility, the use of linen reuse cards, larger bathroom amenity dispensers to replace single-use plastics, and repurposing discarded linens into cleaning cloths. Steam condensate is redirected as boiler feed water, while a portion of electricity is sourced via Open Access renewable energy, reinforcing low-impact operations.

At Taj City Centre Gurugram, sustainability initiatives span energy management, emissions reduction, water efficiency, and responsible material use. The property employs a 150 kW heat pump to optimise hot water production and enhance air-conditioning efficiency, complemented by active harmonic filter panels to limit energy losses and stabilise the electrical system. Dual-fuel kits installed in DG sets mitigate fuel emissions, reinforced by PNG leak detection and safety measures. Bamboo flooring at the Barbeque restaurant, RFID-enabled bamboo keycards, PNG-fired tandoors replacing charcoal across six kitchens, and a water bottling plant producing roughly 300 bottles per hour exemplify material stewardship. Furthermore, the installation of two 7.4 kW EV charging stations via Tata Power supports sustainable transport.

Ambassador, New Delhi – IHCL SeleQtions, implements robust water conservation measures including reuse of treated water for toilets and landscaping, aided by efficient fixtures and dual-flush systems. An ultrafiltration plant enhances water quality and expands reuse capabilities, aligning with the hotel’s environmental objectives.

Across all properties, IHCL drives sustainability through its Paathya framework, guiding environmental stewardship, resource efficiency, and long-term operational value creation, embedding responsible practices into core hospitality operations.
