A modern train station in germany with long-distance trains waiting at platforms. The scene should capture an empty, well-lit station with clear digital departure boards, emphasizing the efficiency of rail transport. The atmosphere should feel clean, organized, and professional, with train tracks stretching into the distance. Include visible train schedules on screens and platforms that suggest busy but delayed services, symbolizing the ongoing punctuality issues faced by db. The focus should be on the station’s infrastructure and train systems, with no people visible in the scene.Image generated with Ai

German Rail (DB) has hit an all-time low in its performance, with long-distance passenger services in October 2025 achieving a punctuality rate of only 51.5%. This marks a dramatic drop from the 52.9% recorded in June 2024 and highlights the ongoing struggles that the state-owned rail operator faces with delays on its long-distance network. Nearly half of all long-distance DB trains were delayed by more than five minutes during the month of October, a trend that is causing significant concerns among passengers, the railway operator, and government officials.

Continued Decline in Punctuality for Long-Distance and Regional Services

The October 2025 figures reveal a broader decline in DB’s overall punctuality. The performance of regional passenger services also worsened, dropping to 84.2% for the month of October. This represents a steady decrease from the early part of the year when regional services had maintained an average of around 90% punctuality. While regional services have shown some consistency, the long-distance trains remain the weakest link in DB’s network.

The decline in both regional and long-distance punctuality comes as a major disappointment for Evelyn Palla, who took over as DB’s CEO in October 2025. Palla succeeded Dr. Richard Lutz, whose tenure was marred by criticism over DB’s failure to improve its punctuality. Lutz’s departure followed mounting frustration with DB’s poor service records, especially on long-distance routes, making the improvement of punctuality a top priority for Palla.

Record-Low Performance and Struggling Long-Distance Services

The disappointing October 2025 data is part of a troubling trend that DB has been grappling with throughout 2024. DB’s overall long-distance punctuality for the year was recorded at 62.5%, and although it rose slightly to 63.4% in the first half of 2025, the poor figures from October have brought the long-distance punctuality performance to an all-time low. The previous lowest punctuality rate for DB’s long-distance services was 52% in November 2023.

The delay problems continue to persist on high-demand routes that connect major cities like Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, and Frankfurt. For passengers who depend on the long-distance trains for both business and leisure, these delays have become a source of frustration, significantly impacting their daily lives. DB operates around 20,000 long-distance trains each month, and these delays are affecting the efficiency and reliability of the entire German rail network.

The Pressure on New CEO Evelyn Palla

For Evelyn Palla, the new CEO of DB, the poor performance in October 2025 will place immense pressure on her leadership. She assumed her position with the goal of restoring public trust and improving the operational efficiency of DB. The low punctuality figures have compounded the challenges she faces, especially after Dr. Lutz’s resignation, which was partly due to DB’s performance struggles.

President Prabowo Subianto of DB acknowledged the situation, stating that the company would need to focus on more comprehensive infrastructure improvements and efficient management to prevent further deterioration of service. Palla’s leadership is critical in turning around the long-standing issues plaguing DB’s service, particularly by improving train scheduling, staffing, and infrastructure upgrades to ensure more consistent on-time performance.

The Impact on Passengers and the Economy

Long-distance trains play a vital role in Germany’s economy, with millions of passengers relying on them for both business and leisure travel. Delays not only cause frustration among commuters but also impact economic activities, as timely transportation is critical to the smooth functioning of businesses, especially in a country as industrialized as Germany. As the German economy increasingly prioritizes sustainability, the rail network is expected to play a key role in reducing carbon emissions and promoting greener transport alternatives to cars and planes. However, frequent delays and inefficiencies undermine this goal.

In addition to impacting passengers, the ongoing delays also affect the broader rail sector, especially as Germany seeks to maintain its position as a leader in European rail travel. High delays lead to increased competition from other forms of transport, such as private cars and airlines, which can be more appealing when train services are unreliable.

Looking Ahead: Addressing the Long-Distance Punctuality Crisis

As Evelyn Palla faces the challenge of addressing DB’s long-standing punctuality crisis, the path forward will require a multifaceted approach. Immediate steps will likely involve improvements to train maintenance schedules, better scheduling management, and upgrading outdated infrastructure. Moreover, DB may need to work closely with the German government to ensure sufficient funding for rail upgrades and ensure that new trains are integrated into the network in a timely manner.

With the pressure on Palla to turn the company’s fortunes around, DB will need to focus on its operational efficiency, customer satisfaction, and long-term investments in infrastructure to restore its reputation and meet the rising expectations of passengers in the coming years.
