Etihad Airways will be reinforcing its plan of expansion into West Africa with a recent interline partnership with the Nigerian airline Ibom Air, making connecting flights to five big cities in Nigeria easy through Lagos and Accra when Etihad commences its regional operations in March 2027.

The agreement will allow passengers travelling on Etihad’s network to connect beyond the two West African gateways to Abuja, Uyo, Port Harcourt, Calabar and Enugu. Instead of arranging separate journeys with different airlines, travellers will be able to book their international and connecting flights under a single itinerary.

The partnership has been arranged ahead of Etihad’s arrival in Lagos and Accra, giving the Abu Dhabi-based airline a wider network in West Africa from the moment its new services begin.

Single-Ticket Travel Across Nigeria

One of the most important elements of the interline arrangement is the ability to combine Etihad and Ibom Air flights within a single booking.

Passengers arriving on Etihad services will be able to continue their journeys on selected Ibom Air flights without having to organise an entirely separate domestic booking. Baggage will also be checked through to the passenger’s final destination under eligible connecting itineraries.

This arrangement is particularly significant in a geographically large market such as Nigeria, where many international passengers arriving in Lagos need to travel onwards to other commercial, administrative and regional centres.

Under the agreement, Abuja, Uyo, Port Harcourt, Calabar and Enugu will become available as onward destinations for Etihad passengers connecting through Lagos or Accra.

Additional connections will also be offered between Accra and Abuja and between Accra and Uyo, extending the partnership beyond domestic Nigerian journeys and adding another layer of regional connectivity between Ghana and Nigeria.

Five Nigerian Cities Join Etihad’s Extended Network

The agreement effectively broadens the reach of Etihad’s planned West African operations without requiring the airline to operate its own aircraft to every Nigerian destination.

Abuja provides access to Nigeria’s federal capital and one of the country’s most important government and business centres. The city plays a central role in corporate, administrative and institutional travel and represents an important destination for passengers arriving from international markets.

Port Harcourt is another strategically important connection. Located in southern Nigeria, the city is closely associated with the country’s energy and commercial sectors and generates substantial business-related travel.

Enugu strengthens access to south-eastern Nigeria, while Uyo and Calabar provide additional connectivity across the southern part of the country.

Together, the five destinations give passengers a considerably broader range of options beyond Lagos and help link Etihad’s international network with important Nigerian regional markets.

The arrangement is also relevant for people travelling to visit relatives and friends, a major component of international traffic between Nigeria and overseas markets. Travellers will have more options for reaching cities closer to their final destinations rather than organising separate onward journeys after arriving in West Africa.

Etihad Prepares for March 2027 West Africa Expansion

The interline partnership comes before Etihad begins its own nonstop passenger services to Lagos and Accra in March 2027.

The airline plans to start a daily service between Abu Dhabi and Lagos on 23 March 2027, establishing a regular direct connection between the United Arab Emirates and Nigeria’s largest commercial centre.

One day later, on 24 March 2027, Etihad is scheduled to begin flights between Abu Dhabi and Accra. The Ghanaian capital will initially receive four Etihad services each week.

The two routes will provide Etihad with important new gateways into West Africa while creating additional connections through Abu Dhabi for passengers travelling across its wider international network.

Launching the Ibom Air partnership alongside these routes means passengers will not be limited to Lagos and Accra as final destinations. Instead, the two cities will also operate as connecting gateways for selected journeys deeper into Nigeria.

Lagos Becomes a Major Gateway for Nigerian Connections

Lagos will sit at the heart of the new connectivity arrangement.

As Nigeria’s largest city and a major centre for commerce, finance and international aviation, Lagos already functions as one of West Africa’s most important aviation gateways. Etihad’s decision to operate daily services gives the airline a regular presence in the Nigerian market and creates the foundation for connections with Ibom Air.

For travellers whose final destination lies elsewhere in Nigeria, the interline arrangement is designed to simplify the transition between international and domestic flights.

The ability to make one booking can remove some of the complexity associated with purchasing independent tickets, particularly for travellers carrying checked baggage or arranging journeys involving multiple flight sectors.

It also expands the practical catchment area of Etihad’s Lagos operation. Although the airline will physically serve Lagos, its commercial network will extend to additional cities through Ibom Air.

Accra Gains Wider Role in the Partnership

Accra will also play an important role in the new agreement.

Etihad’s four-times-weekly Abu Dhabi–Accra service will provide another entry point into West Africa, while the interline partnership will allow selected passengers to continue from the Ghanaian capital to Nigeria.

Connections between Accra and Abuja and between Accra and Uyo will be available under the agreement, creating additional travel possibilities between Ghana and Nigeria.

This makes the partnership more than a simple domestic feed arrangement from Lagos. It creates a network spanning Etihad’s two new West African gateways and selected Nigerian destinations.

For Etihad, this structure provides access to a larger regional market. For Ibom Air, it introduces additional opportunities to carry international passengers arriving from Abu Dhabi and other destinations connected through Etihad’s network.

Uyo and Calabar Gain Greater International Reach

The inclusion of Uyo and Calabar is particularly notable because the agreement brings smaller regional markets into a broader international itinerary.

Uyo is central to Ibom Air’s network and provides access to Akwa Ibom State and surrounding areas. Through the new arrangement, international passengers will be able to combine their Etihad journey with an onward Ibom Air flight as part of the same booking.

Calabar, another important destination in southern Nigeria, will similarly gain improved access for international passengers travelling through Etihad’s West African gateways.

The inclusion of these cities illustrates how interline agreements can extend international airline networks beyond the airports directly served by long-haul aircraft.

Rather than concentrating international connectivity exclusively in the largest gateway cities, such partnerships can channel passengers towards secondary markets using established domestic networks.

Abuja, Port Harcourt and Enugu Strengthen Business and Family Travel

The addition of Abuja, Port Harcourt and Enugu further diversifies the markets covered by the agreement.

Abuja attracts government, diplomatic, institutional and corporate travel, while Port Harcourt is a major centre for business activity in the Niger Delta. Enugu provides an important gateway to south-eastern Nigeria and serves a large regional population.

These destinations can attract different passenger segments, ranging from corporate travellers to tourists and people visiting friends and relatives.

The partnership therefore gives Etihad access to demand that extends well beyond passengers whose journeys begin or end in Lagos.

For passengers originating in these Nigerian cities, the arrangement can also create a more integrated path towards Etihad’s international network through Lagos or Accra, subject to available schedules and eligible itineraries.

Interline Strategy Extends International Airline Networks

Interline agreements have become an important tool for airlines seeking to increase network reach without deploying their own aircraft to every destination.

Under such arrangements, separate airlines cooperate to offer connecting itineraries while continuing to operate their own flights independently.

For passengers, the principal advantage is convenience. International and connecting flights can be incorporated into one reservation, reducing the need to organise each sector separately.

Through the Ibom Air agreement, Etihad can extend the effective reach of its West African operation to destinations where it does not operate direct services.

Ibom Air, meanwhile, gains access to passengers travelling through Etihad’s international network and strengthens its role as a domestic and regional connecting airline within Nigeria and neighbouring markets.

Abu Dhabi Gains Another Link With West Africa

The new Lagos and Accra routes will also reinforce Abu Dhabi’s position as an international connecting hub.

Passengers originating in Nigeria and Ghana will be able to travel to Abu Dhabi and potentially connect onwards across Etihad’s broader network, while travellers heading towards West Africa can use Abu Dhabi as their transfer point before continuing to Lagos, Accra and the Nigerian destinations covered by the interline agreement.

This network model can be particularly valuable for markets where passenger demand is spread across several cities rather than concentrated entirely around one major airport.

Instead of operating long-haul flights to numerous Nigerian cities, Etihad can use Lagos and Accra as primary gateways and rely on Ibom Air’s regional network for onward distribution.

A Broader West African Network From Day One

The timing of the agreement is a significant part of Etihad’s strategy.

Rather than launching flights to Lagos and Accra first and developing onward partnerships later, the interline arrangement is being put in place before the March 2027 services begin.

That means Etihad is preparing to enter the West African market with onward connectivity already incorporated into its network proposition.

From 23 March 2027, Lagos is scheduled to receive daily Etihad flights from Abu Dhabi. Accra will follow on 24 March with four weekly services. Through the partnership with Ibom Air, those international routes will be connected with Abuja, Uyo, Port Harcourt, Calabar and Enugu, alongside the Accra–Abuja and Accra–Uyo connections.

The result is a broader travel network linking Abu Dhabi, Lagos and Accra with several important Nigerian markets through a combination of Etihad’s international services and Ibom Air’s regional operations.

For passengers, the central benefit will be a more integrated journey. For the airlines, the arrangement expands network reach without requiring either carrier to duplicate the other’s operations.

As Etihad prepares for its March 2027 entry into Lagos and Accra, the agreement ensures that its West African presence will extend beyond the two airports appearing on its own route map, creating connections into some of Nigeria’s most important commercial, administrative and regional centres from the beginning of operations.
