Viking is offering the cruise industry’s first tailored Mandarin language Northern European voyages for 2027 with the Chinese-speaking traveller market in mind. Starting in the summer of 2027, Viking will create cruise excursions that focus on a different aspect of Chinese culture and history, with excursions planned for Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Germany, Poland, Lithuania, and Latvia. With 930 guests aboard the Viking Yidun, the cruise line will have European itineraries that feature Mandarin services and culturally considerate amenities on board, as well as tailored shore excursions. Viking plans to meet the demand of Chinese travellers who are interested in premium, slow travel across Europe.
Although the company has plans to expand their Mandarin cruise offerings, Viking already has a strong base to begin from in the Chinese cruise market. Over 100,000 Chinese nationals have already taken a Viking cruise and demand for personalised travel excursions overseas from China is beginning to grow. Viking’s offering for the Chinese outbound cruise market has taken a dedicated approach to the rapid development of the market.

Starting in spring 2027, Viking Yidun will become the centre of Viking’s new Northern Europe cruise programme, introducing a dedicated travel experience created around the expectations of Chinese-speaking passengers. The ocean vessel will provide a comprehensive Mandarin-language environment throughout the voyage. Guests will have access to Mandarin signage, daily onboard newsletters, entertainment systems and shore excursion assistance designed to make European exploration more convenient and accessible.
The ship will also feature services tailored to Chinese travellers, including Chinese electrical outlets, in-room electric kettles and specially selected tea options. Dining programmes will combine authentic regional Chinese dishes with international Western cuisine, creating a balanced culinary experience that reflects both European destinations and familiar tastes. This approach represents a growing trend in global tourism, as cruise operators increasingly develop specialised products for major outbound travel markets.

The centrepiece of Viking’s Northern Europe expansion will be the 15-day Viking Nordic Discovery itinerary, connecting Oslo, Norway and Stockholm, Sweden through a carefully planned route across Scandinavia and the Baltic region. The voyage will introduce Chinese-speaking travellers to a collection of historic ports, cultural capitals and scenic coastal destinations. The itinerary includes Norway’s Oslo, Kristiansand, Bergen, Eidfjord and Stavanger, Denmark’s Copenhagen and Bornholm, Germany’s Warnemünde with access to Berlin, Poland’s Gdańsk, Lithuania’s Klaipėda, Latvia’s Riga and Sweden’s Stockholm.
The cruise will operate in both directions, allowing travellers flexibility when planning their European holidays. Oslo-to-Stockholm departures are scheduled for April 22, June 17, July 15 and August 12, 2027, while Stockholm-to-Oslo sailings will depart on May 6, June 3, July 29 and August 26. Two extended departures will provide an even richer experience, with additional time in Gothenburg, Sweden. The May 20 Oslo-to-Stockholm sailing and July 1 Stockholm-to-Oslo sailing will feature thirteen destinations instead of twelve. By combining famous Nordic capitals with smaller coastal communities, the itinerary highlights Viking’s focus on authentic destination experiences rather than traditional short port visits.
Alongside the Nordic Discovery programme, Viking will introduce a 14-day Atlantic repositioning voyage connecting Lisbon, Portugal with Oslo, Norway on April 9, 2027. The journey will follow Europe’s Atlantic coastline and showcase a diverse collection of destinations across Portugal, Spain, France, Belgium and Norway.
The voyage will include visits to Porto with an overnight stay, A Coruña, Bilbao, Bordeaux/Pauillac with another overnight experience, Le Havre, Zeebrugge and Kristiansand before reaching Oslo, where guests will also enjoy an overnight stay. The itinerary creates a new European travel option for Chinese travellers who want to experience multiple countries in one seamless journey while enjoying Mandarin-language support throughout the cruise.
To further enhance the overall holiday experience, Viking China will introduce pre- and post-cruise land extensions in Oslo, Stockholm and Reykjavik. These extensions will allow passengers to spend additional time exploring Northern European destinations beyond the cruise ports. Travellers will have opportunities to discover city landmarks, local culture and natural attractions before beginning or after completing their ocean voyage.
The addition of Reykjavik provides access to Iceland’s dramatic landscapes, including volcanic scenery, coastal environments and unique Arctic-region experiences, adding another dimension to Viking’s Northern Europe offering.
Viking’s Northern Europe expansion follows the success of its Mandarin-language Mediterranean cruise operations, which already connect Chinese travellers with destinations across nine countries. The Mediterranean itineraries cover major destinations including Italy, Spain, Greece, Türkiye, France, Monaco, Croatia, Montenegro and Slovenia, offering access to some of Europe’s most recognised cultural and historic regions.
Beyond regional cruises, Viking is also expanding its long-distance journeys with major transcontinental voyages. The company operates a 60-day Shanghai-to-Barcelona journey and is preparing a 60-day Athens-to-Stockholm voyage covering forty cities across eighteen countries. These extended itineraries reflect growing demand for longer, experience-focused holidays among affluent travellers looking for deeper cultural connections.
For international cruise tourism and the outbound travel sector in China, the Mandarin-language Northern Europe cruises are a significant development. Viking is working to improve the European cruise experience for Chinese customers by using Northern Europe’s stunning scenery, fascinating historic ports, and cultural attractions. This includes their Mandarin services.
Looking to the future, the 2027 Launch demonstrates how global cruise tourism is changing. Different global markets are expected to define the destinations, languages, and services offered onboard. Viking is the company that defines a new era of China and Europe cruise connections with Viking Yidun and its improved European network.
