South African Tourism made a notable impact at the 15th edition of the Magical Kenya Travel Expo (MKTE), held from October 1 to 3, 2025, at Nairobi’s Uhuru Gardens. The event, which was officially opened by Kenya’s Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua, attracted prominent tourism stakeholders from across Africa and the globe, highlighting the continent’s growing prominence in the international travel market.

The first day of the three-day expo was marked by an impressive surge in business activity, with over 400 one-on-one meetings taking place between South African tourism representatives and potential buyers. This strong start indicated a surge of renewed confidence and fresh opportunities in Africa’s rapidly evolving tourism industry.

South African Tourism showcased its strong commitment to the East African market with a vibrant delegation of 17 South African Product Owners (SAPOs), representing a wide range of the country’s diverse tourism offerings. Alongside them, key industry partners such as Airlink, South African Airways (SAA), KwaZulu-Natal Tourism and Film, Wesgro – Cape Town and the Western Cape, the South African National Convention Bureau (SANCB), Marriott International, Southern Sun, ANEW Hotels & Resorts, and James iLenge Mountain Lodge, were on hand to promote their respective services. Additionally, renowned tour operators like Buja Tours, Dinare Tours, Boyang Gape Tours & Travels, iXplore Africa, Legend Tours, Syavaya, Theo Tours, and the Robben Island Museum contributed to South Africa’s vibrant presence at the expo.

A noteworthy aspect of this year’s participation was the involvement of 10 Small, Medium, and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) from South Africa. This reflects South African Tourism’s ongoing dedication to driving inclusive growth and opening up new market opportunities. These enterprises displayed a rich array of locally owned and operated travel experiences that emphasize authenticity, creativity, and the entrepreneurial spirit that defines South Africa’s tourism sector.

“We are delighted with the success of Magical Kenya Travel Expo 2025,” said Evelyn Mahlaba, Regional General Manager: Africa at South African Tourism. “The quality of engagements and strong business interest reaffirm South Africa’s position as a destination of choice and highlight the importance of strengthening partnerships within our continent.”

Mahlaba further underscored the strategic importance of Kenya within the continent, noting: “Kenya remains one of our fastest-growing source markets, recording 18.7% growth in arrivals compared to the previous year. With the rest of Africa now contributing more than 70% of all international arrivals to South Africa, we see tremendous potential for continued collaboration and regional growth.”

Boosting SMMEs Through Global Trade Exposure

South African Tourism’s involvement in MKTE offered a valuable international stage for Small, Medium, and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) to present their offerings and establish trade links across borders.

“Participating in MKTE has been a milestone for us,” said Excellent Madlala, Managing Director of James iLenge Mountain Lodge. “As a community-rooted enterprise from KwaZulu-Natal, this opportunity allowed us to share our heritage-based offering and develop new partnerships that can directly benefit our local economy.”

Bonolo Ntsime, Founder and Managing Director of iXplore Africa Travel & Tours, added: “Being part of the South African Pavilion gave us visibility in a key market like East Africa. It proved that when small businesses are given access to international platforms, they can stand proudly alongside established brands; that’s the essence of transformation in action.”

These success stories exemplify South African Tourism’s focus on empowering local businesses, expanding trade opportunities, and ensuring that tourism growth is both sustainable and inclusive. “Our support for emerging tourism enterprises is a practical example of how partnerships and inclusion can unlock Africa’s tourism potential,” Mahlaba concluded. “Together, we are creating seamless travel experiences that inspire joy and strengthen Africa’s position on the global stage.”

The success of the Magical Kenya Travel Expo 2025 further solidified South African Tourism’s commitment to driving demand, fostering regional integration, and boosting economic growth through tourism. Building on this success, South African Tourism will continue to strengthen its partnerships, support emerging businesses, and invite travelers from across Africa to explore South Africa—a destination celebrated for its warmth, diversity, and the joy of discovery.
