It recorded over one million free ridership for the entire second Aussie Rules Football season. The express football transport service via Metro has been utilized by thousands of football fans to get to Adelaide Oval. The service has become very popular among fans and now has widened express services to include users from Murray Bridge. Adelaide Oval’s express Metro services continue to grow as more regional travelers use the service.

The latest Adelaide Metro figures show that 1,046,500 boarding’s were recorded on Footy Express services during the current season, even before the highly anticipated Adelaide Crows and Western Bulldogs match at Adelaide Oval. The continued growth highlights the increasing role of public transport in supporting major sporting events while reducing pressure on roads and parking facilities around one of the state’s busiest entertainment areas.

The Footy Express network has become one of South Australia’s most successful event transport initiatives. It provides free travel options for fans attending Adelaide Crows and Port Adelaide home games, along with matches held during the AFL Gather Round. The programme operates additional buses, trains and trams on major match days, creating a smoother travel experience for thousands of spectators.

The upcoming expansion to Murray Bridge will strengthen regional access to Adelaide Oval events. The new service will connect one of South Australia’s fastest-growing regional communities with the state capital on football match days. Supporters from the Murraylands region will have a more direct and affordable way to attend major sporting events without relying entirely on private vehicles.

South Australia’s Free Football Travel Scheme Records Millions of Journeys

Footy Express has experienced rapid growth since its introduction, with passenger numbers increasing every year from 2022 onwards. Over the past four years, the service has recorded more than four million passenger boarding’s, showing strong and consistent demand from football supporters.

On average, Footy Express services transport around 23,500 football fans every week during the AFL season. The service has become especially important during major sporting periods when large crowds gather across Adelaide.

During the AFL Gather Round, Adelaide Metro played a major role in moving spectators efficiently between venues. Public transport carried approximately 48 per cent of fans attending matches at Adelaide Oval, while around 65 per cent of spectators travelling to Barossa Park used Adelaide Metro services.

These figures demonstrate how free public transport can influence travel behaviour during major events. Instead of driving and dealing with traffic congestion, many fans are choosing trains, trams and buses as a reliable alternative.

The success of the Footy Express programme also supports wider transport and sustainability goals. Encouraging large numbers of passengers to use shared transport helps reduce vehicle congestion around sporting venues and improves the overall event experience for visitors.

Each AFL season, Adelaide Metro operates around 300 additional bus, train and tram services for Adelaide Crows and Port Adelaide home matches. Extra services are also provided during Gather Round, ensuring that increased passenger demand can be managed effectively.

The growth of Adelaide Metro’s free travel initiatives reflects a broader focus on making major events easier to access.
