Global Entry Opens Faster US Arrival Processing to Travellers From 23 Countries

USA travel can feel like a long journey even after an international flight has landed. For travellers arriving at major American airports, the final stretch through immigration can mean another wait before the holiday, business trip or family visit really begins. For eligible Indian travellers, however, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Global Entry programme offers a way to make that arrival process considerably more streamlined. India is among the countries whose citizens are eligible to apply for the trusted-traveller programme, alongside nationals from a number of other international markets.

What Is Global Entry?

Global Entry is a U.S. Customs and Border Protection programme designed to provide expedited clearance to pre-approved, low-risk travellers arriving in the United States. Instead of relying entirely on the traditional primary inspection process, enrolled members use dedicated Global Entry processing technology at participating U.S. entry points.

For international travellers, the attraction is straightforward: less time spent waiting for routine border processing after a long-haul flight.

However, Global Entry is not a visa or an alternative to U.S. immigration requirements. Travellers must still hold the documents and authorization required to enter the United States.

India Among Countries Eligible for Global Entry

The current CBP eligibility list includes citizens of Argentina, Australia, Bahrain, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Croatia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Germany, India, Japan, Jordan, Mexico, the Netherlands, Panama, Singapore, South Korea, Switzerland, Taiwan, the United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom. Canadian citizens and residents can access Global Entry benefits through membership in the NEXUS programme.

For the Indian travel market, the inclusion of India is particularly significant. Indian citizens who satisfy the programme’s screening requirements can apply through the U.S. Trusted Traveler Program system and, if approved, receive Global Entry membership for five years.

Indian Applicants Face an Additional Vetting Process

There is an important detail Indian travellers should understand before making plans around Global Entry.

After submitting a Global Entry application through the U.S. system, Indian applicants must provide the required information through India’s Passport Seva Portal, pay a ₹500 local application fee for the background check and schedule an in-person appointment at the designated Passport Seva Kendra or Passport Seva Laghu Kendra, according to CBP.

The process can take considerably longer than travellers might expect.

CBP currently states that vetting by the Government of India may take between six months and two years. This means an Indian traveller planning a future trip to the U.S. should not treat Global Entry as a last-minute airport convenience. Approval needs to be pursued well in advance.

How Much Does Global Entry Cost?

The U.S. Global Entry application fee is currently US$120, and the fee is non-refundable. Once approved, membership lasts for five years.

Indian applicants also have the separate ₹500 Passport Seva fee associated with the Indian-side background-check process.

The programme therefore involves both an American application and an India-side verification process for Indian citizens.

What Happens When You Arrive in the USA?

After becoming a Global Entry member, eligible travellers can use the programme’s designated processing technology when entering the United States at participating airports.

CBP describes Global Entry as expedited border processing for pre-approved, low-risk travellers. The agency’s Trusted Traveler Programs handbook also explains that the programme uses identity verification and biometric technology as part of the arrival process.

That does not mean members are completely exempt from inspection.

CBP maintains the authority to conduct additional checks, and trusted-traveller membership does not guarantee admission into the United States.

Travellers Can Complete Interviews During U.S. Arrivals

One useful feature for international travellers is Enrollment on Arrival.

Indian applicants who receive conditional approval can complete their Global Entry interview at participating locations when entering the United States from abroad. CBP says no separate appointment is required for the Enrollment on Arrival process.

This can be particularly convenient for someone already planning an international trip to the United States, as the interview can potentially be incorporated into the arrival journey rather than requiring a separate visit to an enrollment centre.

Global Entry Also Helps With U.S. Domestic Air Travel

The benefits do not necessarily stop once a traveller clears U.S. immigration.

CBP states that Global Entry members are also eligible for TSA PreCheck when travelling domestically within the United States. For Indian members, the Global Entry membership number needs to be entered into the airline reservation to receive the applicable TSA PreCheck benefit.

This means frequent travellers can potentially benefit at more than one stage of their U.S. journey — during international arrival and during eligible domestic airport security screening.

A Useful Option for Frequent U.S. Travellers

Global Entry is likely to be most relevant to people who travel to the United States regularly for business, tourism, education or family visits. Someone making repeated trips through major U.S. gateways may place greater value on expedited arrival processing than a traveller visiting America only once.

At the same time, eligibility alone does not guarantee approval. CBP conducts background checks and says applicants can be found ineligible for reasons including false or incomplete information, certain criminal matters, customs or immigration violations, outstanding warrants and an inability to establish low-risk status.

What Indian Travellers Should Remember

For Indian citizens, the biggest takeaway is that Global Entry can make repeated U.S. journeys more convenient, but the application should be viewed as a long-term travel-planning decision rather than a quick airport shortcut.

The U.S. programme currently gives eligible Indian travellers access to expedited border processing, but the India-side verification can take six months to two years, according to CBP. Once approved, however, the membership is valid for five years, allowing frequent U.S. visitors to use the benefit across multiple trips.

For a traveller stepping off a long flight into a busy American airport, that distinction matters. The holiday or business meeting may still be hours away, but spending less time waiting at the border can make the journey feel noticeably easier from the moment the aircraft doors open.
