The 50th anniversary of the Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Races marks a defining milestone for one of Asia’s most energetic and culturally significant sporting traditions. In line with this historic moment, Sun Life has deepened its long-standing support for dragon boat culture in Hong Kong through an expanded partnership with the Hong Kong Tourism Board, reinforcing the city’s position as a global hub for heritage-driven events and experiential tourism.

For years, Sun Life has actively supported local dragon boat initiatives, contributing to the preservation and development of this centuries-old tradition. Dragon boat racing, which originates from ancient Chinese folklore and ritual practices, has evolved into a dynamic modern sport that brings together communities, athletes, and spectators from around the world. By continuing to invest in the sport, Sun Life is helping ensure that this cultural heritage remains vibrant, accessible, and relevant to new generations.

As part of its strengthened commitment this year, Sun Life is taking on a prominent leadership role as the title sponsor of both the Sun Life Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Festival and the Sun Life Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Races. This elevated partnership represents more than sponsorship; it is a strategic cultural investment aimed at amplifying Hong Kong’s global visibility as a destination where tradition and modern tourism experiences intersect seamlessly.

The collaboration with the Hong Kong Tourism Board has expanded the scale and ambition of the event, positioning it as a flagship summer attraction. The initiative is designed to attract international travellers, encourage regional participation, and highlight Hong Kong’s unique cultural identity on a world stage. By integrating sport, culture, and tourism into a unified experience, the festival strengthens Hong Kong’s appeal as a year-round destination for immersive cultural travel.

This year’s celebration will unfold as a 13-day dragon boat carnival along the iconic Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade, running from 19 June to 1 July. The waterfront location transforms into a vibrant cultural corridor, offering visitors a panoramic view of Victoria Harbour alongside a full schedule of competitive races and festive programming. The extended duration allows the event to move beyond a single sporting spectacle and evolve into a full-scale cultural festival that engages both residents and international tourists over nearly two weeks.

At the heart of the celebration are the thrilling dragon boat races, where teams from across the world compete in fast-paced, high-energy competition. The rhythmic beating of drums, synchronized paddling, and spirited crowd energy create an electrifying atmosphere that reflects both discipline and tradition. These races are not only athletic contests but also symbolic expressions of teamwork, heritage, and community pride.

Alongside the sporting action, the festival offers a wide range of cultural and lifestyle experiences. Visitors can explore seasonal culinary offerings that highlight Hong Kong’s rich food culture, with local delicacies and festival-themed treats available throughout the promenade. Interactive cultural programmes further enrich the experience, allowing guests to engage with traditional crafts, performances, and storytelling that reflect the deep historical roots of dragon boat culture.

Sun Life has also introduced a series of specially curated community engagement activities to enhance participation and inclusivity throughout the festival period. These initiatives are designed to encourage public involvement, strengthen social connections, and create a shared sense of celebration among residents and visitors alike. By blending entertainment with cultural education, the event becomes more than a spectacle; it becomes a living expression of heritage.

The festival also plays a significant role in strengthening Hong Kong’s tourism appeal during the summer season. With increasing interest from Mainland Chinese travellers and international visitors, the event serves as a key driver of inbound tourism, supporting local businesses, hospitality sectors, and cultural industries. The integration of large-scale sporting events with tourism development reflects a broader strategy to position Hong Kong as a leading destination for cultural mega-events.

Beyond the physical experience, digital engagement forms an important part of the festival’s outreach. Through interactive content and online initiatives, audiences are able to connect with the celebration remotely, extending its reach far beyond the promenade. This digital layer ensures that the spirit of the dragon boat festival is accessible to global audiences, reinforcing its status as an internationally recognized cultural celebration.

Ultimately, the expanded partnership between Sun Life and the Hong Kong Tourism Board underscores a shared vision: to preserve tradition while embracing innovation. By elevating the Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Races into a large-scale cultural festival, the initiative ensures that this historic event continues to thrive in a modern context, inspiring both participants and spectators from around the world.

Adley Low, Chief Client and Marketing Officer of Sun Life Hong Kong Limited, said: “Dragon boat racing is a powerful symbol of Hong Kong’s cultural identity and a meaningful way to bring people together. We are thrilled to partner with the Hong Kong Tourism Board as the title sponsor of the ‘Sun Life Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Festival’ and ‘Sun Life Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Races’, to present this international event on an even bigger scale this year. As Sun Life prepares to welcome our 135th anniversary in Hong Kong, we are proud to contribute to the local mega-event economy while deepening our connections with the community, reflecting our ongoing commitment to helping Clients live healthier, more fulfilling lives.”
