Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Iberia have announced a transformative collaboration aimed at revolutionizing the airline industry. By leveraging AWS’s cutting-edge cloud technologies and artificial intelligence (AI), Iberia plans to enhance its operational efficiency, bolster its digital infrastructure, and improve the overall passenger experience. This strategic partnership marks a significant step forward in Iberia’s digital transformation, allowing the airline to implement advanced AI solutions for predictive maintenance, personalized services, and more agile decision-making processes, ultimately reshaping the way passengers interact with the airline.

Amazon Web Services, Inc. (AWS), a subsidiary of Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN), has announced a strategic collaboration with Iberia Líneas Aéreas de España, S.A., Spain’s national airline renowned for its expansive network spanning Europe, Latin America, North America, Asia, and Africa. As part of this multi-year partnership, Iberia has chosen AWS as its cloud provider to drive its digital transformation. This collaboration will enable Iberia to revamp its operations, improve the reliability and resilience of critical applications, and leverage artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance the overall passenger experience.

Iberia has successfully retired its physical data centers, migrating its entire IT infrastructure to AWS, including 1,638 servers, 1,235 databases, 572 applications, and Iberia.com. This strategic shift enabled the airline to overhaul its operations with a modern microservices framework using AWS tools such as Amazon ECS, AWS Fargate, Amazon EventBridge, Amazon DynamoDB, and Amazon Aurora Serverless. This move has significantly enhanced system scalability, allowing Iberia to introduce new features faster and with greater flexibility. Code updates now happen 1,000% more quickly, development cycles are reduced by 40%, and error rates have dropped by 38%, thanks to improved correlation of metrics, traces, and logs. Furthermore, Iberia’s new operational model leverages automation to manage over 200 AWS accounts and more than 2,000 AWS resources, enhancing both agility and governance. To strengthen resilience, Iberia is also relocating key workloads to the AWS Europe (Spain) Region, establishing multi-region disaster recovery and improving latency for specific operations.

AI-Driven Customer Experience Enhancements

Iberia is leveraging AWS technology to redefine the passenger journey with cutting-edge AI solutions. By integrating Amazon Bedrock, the airline has developed an AI Travel Assistant—an advanced GenAI-powered chatbot within the “Mi Iberia” personal area. This digital assistant provides personalized trip recommendations, enhancing the travel planning process by tailoring suggestions to individual customer profiles and preferences. Additionally, Iberia is embedding generative AI across its operations. This includes tools for maintenance engineers, AI-powered customer service assistants, and an enhanced contact center experience, driven by behavioral analytics. With over 10 generative AI agents already deployed, Iberia is making great strides in transforming both its customer-facing and internal operations.

Achieving Operational Excellence Through Real-Time Data

Iberia has launched a cutting-edge Real-Time Data Platform on AWS that consolidates customer, commercial, and operational data. This platform powers a wide array of use cases across the airline’s operations, including live reporting, personalized marketing campaigns, and demand forecasting. With more than 100 dashboards and 50 AI models managing over 20 million daily business process requests, this platform is crucial in improving customer interactions and operational efficiency. The system processes almost 2 TB of data daily, thanks to its serverless architecture and Amazon SageMaker. The platform’s positive impact on revenue has already reached tens of millions of euros, with projections indicating a rise to hundreds of millions in the next five years, underscoring its strategic importance in Iberia’s digital evolution.

Future Plans for AI-Enhanced Maintenance Operations

Looking to the future, Iberia plans to integrate advanced AI capabilities into its Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) operations through AWS services. This integration will leverage predictive analytics, automated documentation processing, and AI-supported technical operations, aiming to significantly reduce aircraft downtime and optimize maintenance costs. This modernization will also contribute to enhanced safety standards and greater operational efficiency.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Iberia have teamed up to transform the airline industry by utilizing AWS’s cloud and AI technologies. This collaboration will streamline Iberia’s operations, improve passenger experiences, and enable the airline to implement advanced, data-driven solutions for enhanced service delivery.

In today’s dynamic aviation landscape, resilience and innovation are paramount,” said Tanuja Randery, Vice President and Managing Director, Europe, Middle East & Africa (EMEA) at AWS. “By leveraging AWS, Iberia Airlines has not only achieved remarkable operational resilience through multi-region capabilities, but it is also pioneering the use of generative AI to transform the passenger experience. Iberia successful deployment of AI-powered solutions across customer service, maintenance, and operations demonstrates how airlines can harness cloud technology to build both a more resilient and innovative future of air travel“.
